However, she didn't expec...

Chapter 23 Wild Boar

"Song Yan, if you're tired of studying, go outside." What's that sound? Song Yan heard a strange noise. Her instinctive reaction was to immediately enter her spatial dimension. She stared outside. What was that? It was an animal she'd only heard of, but had never seen before—a wild boar. And it was quite large. This thing was about to run away. No way, it had to be mine. Good heavens, with a thought, the wild boar was at her feet. Fortunately, animals are usually stunned for a moment when stored in a spatial dimension, so they weren't aggressive for the time being. Looking at the wild boar at her feet, what should she do? Should she throw it into a trap first?

Song Yan knew he couldn't fix this himself, so he carried the grass to find Wei Aiguo.

"Sister-in-law is here. Brother Aiguo, is it because your water is so nourishing? Look how much prettier she's become since she married you!" The young men working in the fields saw Song Yan standing at the edge of the field, looking like he was waiting for Wei Aiguo, and they started teasing him.

"Go ahead and be patriotic, don't keep your wife waiting," the team leader shouted.

Song Yan looked at Wei Aiguo as he approached with eager eyes. Wei Aiguo felt a strange chill run down his spine. What was she up to? When Wei Aiguo heard Song Yan say that she had caught a wild boar in her trap, he was truly startled. Her eyes were so eager, as if money would spring out at the slightest nod from Wei Aiguo.

"Go home and cook quickly, make enough food for one more person. I need to find someone to help," Wei Aiguo said.

Song Yan had another concern. "Such a big wild boar, we can't eat it all, can we sell the meat?"

Wei Aiguo's heart softened. Song Yan was only 17 years old; the brigade leader had changed her age to match hers for the purpose of registering their marriage. Song Yan was practically a big kid. Why argue with a child? "Alright," Wei Aiguo said, then went back to work.

Wei Aiguo brought Chen Xiaodong back for dinner. Chen Xiaodong was a little shorter than Wei Aiguo, and he seemed a bit embarrassed when he entered the house. Wei Aiguo greeted him, "Brother Xiaodong, hurry up and eat."

Wei Aiguo didn't tell his mother about the wild boar, only that Chen Xiaodong would help him with some chores that afternoon. Song Yan said he was going to the commune to buy some things that afternoon. Aunt Wei wasn't one to meddle, and she told Song Yan not to worry. If anything happened, she would have Wei Ping call someone.

After finishing their meal, Aiguo grabbed his bow and arrows, along with a knife, rope, and a sack, and followed Song Yan into the mountains. When they entered Laoheishan Mountain, Wei Aiguo's face darkened.

"How dare you! Even seasoned hikers wouldn't dare venture into Old Black Mountain alone. Yet you dared to dig traps there. Do you know how many people have gone into Old Black Mountain and never come out?" Wei Aiguo was furious.

Song Yan obediently listened to the reprimand. After all, Wei Aiguo was disciplining her for her own good.

Chen Xiaodong quietly gave Song Yan a thumbs-up. It was unclear whether he was referring to her audacity in venturing into Laoheishan or her boldness in defying Wei Aiguo.

When Wei Aiguo saw the ferocious wild boar in the trap, his face darkened further. A person would surely be in serious trouble if they encountered such a large boar. "Song Yan, I'll only help you this once. Next time, no matter what prey it is, I won't come."

Song Yan would definitely agree! But is it possible to run into a wild boar again? Impossible!

Wei Aiguo drew his bow and shot an arrow into the pig's head. After the wild boar stopped struggling, Wei Aiguo prepared to jump into the trap. "What are you doing?" Song Yan grabbed Wei Aiguo.

"Quickly bleed the wild boar. If we don't bleed it in time, the boar will be in trouble." Wei Aiguo was a little surprised to see that Song Yan hadn't let go.

"What if it's not completely dead and gets up and hurts someone?" Song Yan wanted pork, but he also knew that wild boars were ferocious.

Wei Aiguo smiled, surprised that Song Yan had considered his safety. Wei Aiguo patted her hand and jumped. Song Yan didn't see clearly whether Wei Aiguo landed at the bottom of the trap first, or whether his knife pierced the pig's neck first…

Wei Aiguo and Chen Xiaodong worked together seamlessly. First, they pulled the wild boar out of the trap, then swiftly butchered it. The head, innards, trotters, and meat were all neatly packed away. So efficient!

"Let's go quickly! This strong smell of blood will attract wild animals. There are wolves around here. You're lucky you weren't carried off by them." Wei Aiguo was a little angry.

Song Yan wasn't afraid at all; she was confident she could protect herself. But she couldn't say that. Song Yan quickly changed the subject. "Aren't the pig's head and offal cheap? Let's keep them and eat them! The pork ribs aren't cheap either, let's keep them too!"

"Okay," Wei Aiguo agreed. Chen Xiaodong had gone through all that trouble, so they couldn't let him miss out on the taste of meat. The offal was delicious once it was cleaned; they could send some to Chen Xiaodong later.

Wei Aiguo and Chen Xiaodong each carried half a pig carcass. Wei Aiguo carried the pig's offal, while Chen Xiaodong carried the pig's head. Song Yan quickly left with his tools.

The three men arrived at the grove of trees they passed on their way out of the village, all drenched in sweat. Wei Aiguo returned the pig's head and offal, washed off the blood, and then borrowed a horse-drawn cart from the brigade.

Wei Aiguo is very thoughtful in his work.

Upon arriving at the commune, Chen Xiaodong watched the carriage while Wei Aiguo went to find someone. Song Yan once again felt their perfect teamwork. It seemed…it seemed they had done something like this before. Not long after, Wei Aiguo returned to drive the carriage. Song Yan followed closely, afraid of being left behind.

Wei Aiguo sighed inwardly; he wasn't so shallow as to embezzle money meant for pork. Song Yan, on the other hand, wanted to see for himself.

They made their way through several turns into a small courtyard. There were four or five people there, with a man with a mole on his face in the center; he seemed to be in charge. He was called Sixth Brother. He greeted Wei Aiguo warmly, "How long has it been since I've seen you?"

"Sixth Brother, let's check the goods first. We're using the brigade's horse-drawn carts, so we need to hurry back," Wei Aiguo said.

Sixth Brother was certainly satisfied with the fresh pork, and kept it all at 80 cents a pound. There were a total of 212 pounds of pork. Just as Sixth Brother was about to pay, Song Yan suddenly asked, "How much does this pork cost per pound?"
