Song Yan never thought she would experience a day of transmigrating into a book. Well, if she transmigrated, she transmigrated! The 1970s weren't that scary.
However, she didn't expec...
Wei Aiguo's medication temporarily avoids fish, so Song Yan still made chicken soup.
Song Yan was tending the coal stove, reading a book. When he looked up and saw Fang Jinghua, all his good mood vanished.
Song Yan pretended not to see her, moved the half chicken in the pot with his chopsticks, and then put the lid back on.
Fang Jinghua sized up Song Yan: a dark blue shirt, black pants, and black cloth shoes. Aside from his bright, sparkling eyes, Song Yan was incredibly unsophisticated.
Actually, Song Yan's outfit was definitely in good condition in the brigade; it was new and had no patches. But Song Yan wouldn't dress like that in the brigade; his clothes were fitted at the waist. Xiao Xiao was skillful and would even add a decoration to the pants according to Song Yan's ideas.
Once outside, Song Yan didn't wear those clothes.
"Hey! Can't you see me?" Fang Jinghua displayed her sense of superiority to the fullest.
Song Yan didn't even glance at her. "First, I'm not called 'Hey.' Second, I don't know you."
"You..." Fang Jinghua was furious at Song Yan's blatant disrespect, but remembering the purpose of her visit, she suppressed her anger. She took a deep breath. "You don't know me, that's alright. Do you think my dress is pretty? It's a dress. Do you think these shoes are pretty?"
Song Yan glanced at Fang Jinghua. She wore a Russian-style long dress, small leather shoes, and her hair was tied in a ponytail. She had big eyes and fair skin; she was indeed youthful and beautiful.
Song Yan didn't say anything and went back to reading.
Fang Jinghua stomped her foot in frustration, perhaps feeling she couldn't give up. She moved closer to Song Yan. "Do me a favor, I'll buy you a new dress and a new pair of shoes." Seeing Song Yan didn't speak, she continued, "This dress costs ten yuan, and the shoes cost twelve yuan! What do you think?"
No wonder Fang Jinghua is so arrogant and willful; she has the right to be. The shoes and skirt together cost 22 yuan. She gave them away without hesitation. A strong laborer in the countryside might not even have 22 yuan left in a year.
"Not good! It's not worth getting a beating if a man finds out." Song Yan kept his head down, reading.
"Get beaten up? You got beaten up? Soldiers can hit people too?!" Fang Jinghua's eyes widened, her face full of disbelief, or perhaps it was the first time she had ever heard of such a thing.
Fang Jinghua was silent for a moment, then her voice softened. "Does he always hit you?"
Song Yan was just talking nonsense, but suddenly he felt he couldn't stay angry with her and even felt like teasing her.
Song Yan looked at Fang Jinghua: "Did you buy this dress and shoes with your own money? No way! Can you do housework? Can you cook?"
Fang Jinghua didn't understand why Song Yan asked that question, so she honestly shook her head.
Song Yan: "If you were like this, you'd probably get beaten up eight times a day by your husband back home."
“Everyone is equal, so why should men be allowed to hit women?” Fang Jinghua raised her voice. “Tell me, does he always hit you?”
Song Yan: "This is a family matter, and it's not convenient for me to tell you." Song Yan couldn't very well say that Wei Aiguo beat her up; she couldn't just make things up like that. Even though she had already misled her.
Fang Jinghua interpreted this as Song Yan being afraid to speak. "Then you help me, and I'll give you the money. You can keep it secretly; no one will know."
Song Yan: "My mother-in-law takes care of anything the family needs, so I don't have to spend any money."
Fang Jinghua found Song Yan quite pitiful, having to listen to her mother-in-law at home. "If you had money, you could buy something for your family, right?"
This girl even knows that a woman should support her parents' family after she gets married.
Song Yan shook her head. "When I was at my parents' house, I was always hungry and cold. They didn't even want me to go to school. I only got what my cousins left over. Why should I spend money to buy things for them?"
These are all true; that's how harshly Grandma Song treated her. If they could prevent Song Yan from studying, they would have stopped her long ago.
Fang Jinghua was dumbfounded. Was this even possible? She stood there stunned for a long time. "Your family is from the countryside, are you going to do farm work?"
"Yes!" Song Yan still has farm work to do; it's just a matter of how much or how little he does.
"So, will you still have to take care of your mother-in-law?" Fang Jinghua asked.
"That's right! Of course, a daughter-in-law should take care of her mother-in-law!"
Song Yan's tone was very natural, that is, he did it every day.
Fang Jinghua found it hard to believe: "You have to do farm work and take care of your mother-in-law. And your husband still beats you?"
Song Yan chuckled, as if he were talking about something very happy, "He's in the army and not at home, how could he possibly hit me?"
Fang Jinghua: "Is there anything you want?"
Song Yan shook his head.
Fang Jinghua wanted to say something, but she couldn't bring herself to say it.
How can a person not have things they want?
Song Yan poured out the chicken soup, sealed the stove, put away the pot, and left!
Fang Jinghua was left in the communal kitchen.
While serving chicken soup to Wei Aiguo, Song Yan said to Fang Jinghua, "See, I was right to ask you to explain things to me clearly, wasn't I?"
Wei Aiguo slowly sipped his chicken soup. How could he bring this up? It's never a good time to say anything.
Song Yan: "She was still in a daze when I left. I think your image in her heart has collapsed."
Wei Aiguo: "What does this have to do with me?"
Song Yan: "You really think it's okay? Then next time I can say whatever I want?"
Wei Aiguo didn't say anything. As long as Fang Jinghua didn't bother him, what else mattered?
The swelling in Wei Aiguo's left upper arm and the back of his foot is decreasing. After the swollen, shiny skin wrinkled, it began to peel.
Song Yan applied a warm towel to the area to soak off the peeling skin.
With his wife's attentive care, Wei Aiguo could lie comfortably in bed. He felt his life was incredibly happy. His only worry was the situation of Bai Shuang and his comrades.
