Chapter 38 Finding the Remaining Account

Two large bowls of wild vegetables were emptied from a pot. With each person taking a big bite, the pot was gone in no time. Hu Youguang wanted to join in, so he grabbed a bowl to get some, but seeing the pot was almost empty, he stood there awkwardly, holding his bowl. Song Yan remembered Hu Youguang. When Song Yan arrived and had just opened her eyes, Jiang Xiaoxiao had asked Wei Aiguo to find someone to bandage her head. Wei Aiguo, still angry, stood there motionless. It was Hu Youguang who persuaded her, "No matter what, we should talk about it later. If she keeps bleeding like this, something terrible will happen!" Xiaoxiao said he had gone to find the village sanitation worker to bandage Song Yan's head. Song Yan always wanted to repay kindness with kindness. Song Yan picked up the pot and poured the remaining vegetables into Hu Youguang's bowl, which was now more than half full.

The simple, honest man scratched his head sheepishly, "What can I say? What do you eat if you love your country?"

"It's alright. I still have some at home." Song Yan turned around and took out another bowl of wild vegetables from the basket. Actually, Song Yan could take out as many as he wanted.

Seeing that Zhen and Hu Youguang were both happy, they left. Hu Youguang's wife was unhappy; her husband was really something, just ordering some wild vegetables. But when she tasted it, she was utterly astonished. This was purslane, growing everywhere along the roadside. How had it become so delicious?

Wei Sanzhuang had wanted to come earlier, but his mother stopped him and made him late. Aunt Wei was furious, "It's just a pot of wild vegetables, what's so good about it? If he cared, he would have brought fish jelly long ago."

Wei Dazhuang's second son was already six or seven years old. This kid knew the two families were related, and he always heard his grandmother say that Wei Aiguo should bring them good food as a token of respect. Actually, he didn't know how good the food could be. Seeing others scrambling for it, why couldn't he take what his own relative had? The child ran over, grabbed the small basin of fish jelly, and ran. Before Song Yan could react, Wei Aiguo had already lifted the boy up and ruthlessly pulled the basin from his arms. There was a big tree nearby, and Wei Aiguo casually hung the child on a branch. With nowhere to hold on, the child burst into tears. This stirred up a hornet's nest; Wei Er's family rushed over.

"Wei Aiguo, what are you doing? Why are you picking on a child?" Aunt Wei shouted.

“Such a young child dares to snatch things, shouldn’t he be taught a lesson?” Wei Aiguo said.

Wei Ershen's eldest son, Wei Dazhuang, was furious. Wei Aiguo had dared to bully his son right in front of him. He reached out and threw a punch at Wei Aiguo, yelling, "Do you think my son doesn't have a father?" Before he could land a punch, Wei Aiguo kicked him to the ground.

"So, it turns out the third brother can beat Wei Ping just because he doesn't have a father," Wei Aiguo's words made everyone realize the truth. It seemed petty that Wei Aiguo reacted so strongly to a child's lack of restraint. But it wasn't pettiness; he still held a grudge against Wei Ping. Everyone in the village knew that Wei Ping's illness stemmed from being beaten by Wei Sanzhuang, and that the surgery had reportedly cost a considerable amount of money. Wei Aiguo hadn't mentioned it, and everyone assumed it was over, but little did they know, this was what was going on.

Wei Sanzhuang still felt ashamed of being beaten that day. "Your wife has already hit you, what more do you want?"

No one knows why Wei Aiguo's foot moved so fast; before anyone could even see clearly, Wei Sanzhuang was kicked to the ground. "How dare you point fingers at my wife?"

The child was still hanging in the tree; Aunt Wei hadn't even had time to look after her grandson before her son collapsed. She had to prioritize the younger one, as her second grandson was crying loudly. She and her eldest daughter-in-law rushed forward. It was really difficult for Wei Aiguo, an elder and a sister-in-law, to lend a hand.

"It's your own child, you should be worried about him. Wei Ping almost lost his life, and you didn't even ask about him once." Song Yan had been quite resentful towards Wei Aiguo for not seeking justice for Wei Ping. If it weren't for Wei Sanzhuang, Wei Ping wouldn't have fallen ill at that time. He almost couldn't go to the county because of the heavy rain; the consequences would have been unimaginable.

Aunt Wei had never looked down on Song Yan, and the old woman raised her hand to hit her. Aunt Cheng, her eldest daughter-in-law, Wang Wenjuan, and Hu Youguang's wife had already gathered around, keeping an eye on her. So Aunt Wei didn't manage to hit her and was pulled away by the others. Sister-in-law Wei was also furious. If Song Yan hadn't prepared such a terrible dish, would the child have been allowed to get close? Her mother-in-law couldn't beat her, so she couldn't beat her.

Jiang Xiaoxiao stood firmly beside Song Yan. Song Yan's small frame couldn't withstand a beating. She was there to protect her. Because Xiaoxiao stepped in, Sister-in-law Wei scratched Xiaoxiao's arm. For Song Yan's sake, the quiet girl Jiang Xiaoxiao instantly transformed into a little tigress.

As soon as the commotion started, everyone gathered around. Li Yuanzhao naturally led the educated youth over. Li Yuanzhao wasn't one to suffer a loss, nor did she want her friends to be taken advantage of. She now included Song Yan and Jiang Xiaoxiao in her group of friends. She immediately switched to biased mode, and the female educated youth naturally followed Li Yuanzhao's lead. The villagers felt that Aunt Wei's family was in the wrong and refused to help, so Sister-in-law Wei became the one who got beaten.

Interestingly, Wei Erzhuang was about to make a move when his wife stopped him. Wei Erzhuang's wife thought to herself, "Little Er's been spoiled rotten; he deserves to be punished. Sanzhuang brought this on himself. How could you lay a hand on a fatherless child? He may not have a father, but he has his second uncle! Besides, what's Ren Quan and Cheng Youfu doing, glaring at you like that? Waiting to beat you up!" Wei Lao Er, that idiot, didn't understand at all. Cheng Lao Er, on the other hand, was watching his brother. If Cheng Youfu got hurt, Cheng Lao Er would have to step in; what use was Wei Lao Er alone?

"Wei Aiguo, what are you doing? Don't you even respect me as your uncle?" Uncle Wei yelled from the side.

Everyone: If he cared about you, his second uncle, would he have hit your son in front of you?

Why was he yelling like that? He was being held back by Cheng Yousuo, Chen Xiaodong, and the others, and had no chance to join in. He watched as the eldest and third brothers were being beaten by Wei Aiguo. Even after the third brother had begged for mercy, no one helped to break up the fight. "Gods, this is too much! Are you all just going to watch my son get beaten up, fellow villagers?"
