Song Yan never thought she would experience a day of transmigrating into a book. Well, if she transmigrated, she transmigrated! The 1970s weren't that scary.
However, she didn't expec...
"I didn't steal anything! That rabbit leg was something you saved for me!" He Jianian thought. It would be too embarrassing if everyone thought he stole the rabbit leg. He wasn't afraid to lay it all out on the table. It was something Song Yan had given willingly. Wu Meili already had a child; how could he possibly run away?
Unexpectedly, Wei An, who was in Song Yan's arms, objected, "You're lying. This morning, Auntie said that the rabbit legs were for me and my brother."
Wei Ping: "You liar, give me back my rabbit leg!"
Wei Ping grabbed the spinning top that Song Yan had bought for him and smashed it directly on He Jianian's forehead.
He Jianian was so angry she wanted to slap the two children.
Cheng Yousuo held down He Jianian, who was about to jump around, and said, "Song Zhiqing, I think your bedding has been turned over. Did anything go missing?" Cheng Yousuo had seen this as soon as he entered the room.
Song Yan thought the ladder Brother Cheng had given her was incredibly useful. It seemed she only then realized, "Oh!" She picked up a small, empty box that was half-buried under the blanket. "My money's gone! I put it in that box!"
All eyes were on He Jianian, who panicked. "I didn't come in! I didn't steal anything!"
The suspicious gazes stung He Jianian's entire body; when had he ever been so humiliated! He couldn't bear to be remembered as a thief. "I didn't steal! I didn't steal!" He Jianian cried, reaching into his pocket. In his haste, he pulled out the lining of his pocket. "Clatter!" A roll of money fell to the ground.
The room was quiet!
The room was packed with people, the outer room was full of people, and there were even more people three or four layers deep outside the room.
"Wouldn't this count as catching someone red-handed?" Li Yuanzhao said softly.
The buzzing of discussion among the crowd had just begun.
"It wasn't me, I didn't take it, I don't know how the money ended up on me." He Jianian was frantic.
"Brother Cheng, shut him up!" Song Yan said.
Cheng Yousuo grabbed a rag from the side of the kang (a heated brick bed) and stuffed it directly into He Jianian's mouth.
Captain: "Song, how do you plan to handle this?" It's easier to talk if it's not about her daughter!
"We'll talk about these things later. I can't let the children see these dirty things." After saying that, Song Yan coaxed Wei Ping and Wei An in her arms. The two children seemed to know that their aunt wouldn't be bullied now, so they listened to their aunt and let Sister-in-law Cheng lead them away, looking back every few steps.
He Jianian, held like a weakling by Cheng Yousuo, whimpered in frustration. "This guy dares to dream of having two women on each side!" Song Yan poked his face with a broom handle. "You really dare to dream, and you really dare to do it!"
Wu Meili wanted to speak, to say that He Jianian didn't steal the money, to say not to touch him, to say...
I have so much to say, but my heart is churning so much that I can't say it.
Wu Meili's morning sickness wasn't severe, which is why she dared to go out in public. However, there was a medicine in the room, one of the five medicines Song Yan had bought before, the one Song Yan hadn't finished using. Because there was so little of it, the smell was very mild, almost undetectable to a normal person, but a pregnant woman couldn't stand it.
Wu Meili wanted to go out, but Sister-in-law Cheng held her tightly. At this moment, she didn't even dare to argue because she was about to lose control of her nausea.
Song Yan turned to look at Wu Meili, whose face was pale. She finally couldn't hold it in any longer and started gagging repeatedly.
Those in the room who had been through similar experiences could guess pretty much what was going on, and their eyes darted back and forth between her and He Jianian.
What else could Captain Wu not have thought of!
Wu Changsheng was a man who valued his reputation his whole life. While he might not have been all-knowing, no one dared to look down on him, whether in the brigade or the commune. But today, all his pride was gone!
Aunt Wei is an honest woman, but honest women aren't fools. If things aren't made clear today, how will Song Yan face people in the future? His son will be the subject of gossip. "Captain, what happened today was done by your daughter. You can't let it slide just because she's your daughter. Explain everything clearly from beginning to end today."
Captain Wu said, "Sister-in-law, I'm so ashamed to face you. I've raised my daughter into a scoundrel. I..."
Aunt Wei waved her hand and continued, "I heard your daughter screaming desperately from inside the house, 'Song Yan, you whore, you slut, you shameless bastard, come out here!'" Aunt Wei asked Wu Meili, "Is that what she was screaming?"
Even if Wu Meili is stupid, she knows she's gotten herself into trouble today and there's no going back. No matter how much she suspects Song Yan, without catching him in the act, there's no evidence. Everyone probably guessed she was pregnant, right? She was terrified and cried!
“That’s what they shouted, I heard it clearly,” Jiang Xiaoxiao was the first to speak.
"I heard that shout too!" Sister-in-law Cheng testified.
“We were working when Wu Meili called out and we all came out,” Li Yuanzhao said.
Aunt Wei was trembling with anger, but Song Yan comforted her, "Mother, none of them can escape, don't worry. Let me explain."
"I was talking to Huang Guoqing about how much cattail grass we could use tomorrow. We had sprayed too much water on the cattail grass before, so I told him to be careful. Then I heard Wu Meili start yelling at the top of her lungs. Huang Guoqing, is that right?"
"Yes, I heard it. We were right behind the house at the time," Huang Guoqing said.
Pan Bo: "I'm here too, I heard you!"
"When I came back, I saw a whole yard full of people. He Jianian was still in my house, stealing meat! Was it Wu Meili?" Song Yan asked Wu Meili.
She cried, saying it was because she was unwilling to accept it, not because she was afraid. Then a thought struck her: "This isn't my fault. Cheng Xiuyun said it. She said that many times when Song Yan went out, Jianian would follow him out shortly after! I only went to catch them in the act because I heard her words!"
"Your mother was in the knitting group every day and didn't even notice! You're such a pig-headed person. You actually believed Cheng Xiuyun's words!" Captain Wu really wanted to stuff Wu Meili back into her mother's womb and have her give birth again.
The captain pointed at Cheng Yousuo and said, "Go and get someone to bring Cheng Xiuyun here. These idle women can't stand not causing trouble."
