Charming Educated Youth: I Brings Space to the 1970s

Song Yan never thought she would experience a day of transmigrating into a book. Well, if she transmigrated, she transmigrated! The 1970s weren't that scary.

However, she didn't expec...

Chapter 86 Affluent Days

Song Yan treats Wei Ping and Wei An well; the two children see her as their mother. These past few days, everyone's been talking about how the two children protected Song Yan that day. Just look at the teeth marks on Wang Wenjuan's hand; they bled immediately.

An old saying goes that bad breath makes wounds more susceptible to infection, so Wang Wenjuan had to spend a dime to get her wounds disinfected at the clinic.

Song Yan specially brought Wang Wenjuan a pound of red dates. She'd never even seen such good dates before, let alone tasted them. Wang Wenjuan immediately said she'd gotten a great deal.

Not only Wang Wenjuan, but also Aunt Wei and Xiaoxiao were reluctant to eat the red dates. Song Yan didn't dare take too many; even taking just one pound each of them made them grumble endlessly.

"How could you be so wasteful?"

"This is such a good product, I won't buy it again."

I've been giving away a lot of things lately, and the space has expanded considerably. The things I've received are piled up layer upon layer.

The demand for cabbage would definitely be high during the Lunar New Year, so Song Yan planted cabbage and radishes. She harvested the cabbage when it reached seven or eight pounds and the radishes when they reached four or five pounds. They grew so fast, a new crop every six days! She didn't dare let them grow too fast, otherwise it would be too illogical. Before she knew it, she had harvested tens of thousands of pounds. She simply built a wall of cabbage and radishes in her spatial dimension.

With so much delicious food, Song Yan couldn't help but think how wonderful it would be if the old man were here too! He wondered when he would hear news of him again.

We planted more jujube trees, apple trees, and pine trees.

The cages from the brigade haven't been returned yet; they're full of rabbits. We'll sell another large batch in a few days.

When making dried fish, the fish meat wasn't cleaned very thoroughly, and there were still quite a few large fish heads left. Song Yan had eaten crispy fish bones before, but unfortunately, she didn't know how to make them.

Song Yan simply threw the fish head and bones into a large pot and simmered them over low heat. He didn't even dare use the spring water from his spatial dimension, only adding salt. The resulting fish jelly was semi-transparent and tasted very delicious.

Song Yan cooked pot after pot.

Next time, send it to Boss Qin; we can get a good price for it!

Now that we have fish, we make fish soup, braised fish, and steamed fish in rotation. In just a few days, Wei An's face showed signs of improvement.

Now, the aroma of stewed fish wafts from many homes in the village, making the surrounding neighbors extremely envious.

This year has been the most leisurely and prosperous winter for Lao Han and his comrades since they arrived at Qingshan Brigade.

With ample food supplies, Song Yan would occasionally bring over a wild rabbit and eggs, and now there were even fish.

Now, getting rabbits from the space doesn't require disguise or shooting anymore, because Song Yan's speed is fast enough to catch them. The eggs are bought from the black market. Old Zeng has money; he doesn't hesitate to buy whatever he wants.

Old Zeng could buy two yuan's worth of goods for one yuan at Song Yan's place. He rarely bought things for himself before and hadn't noticed at all. Old Liao and Old Du did notice, but didn't say anything, as they had received plenty of help from Song Yan.

The cabbages in Song Yan's cellar were so fresh and juicy that Old Liao couldn't resist popping a couple of bites into his mouth while chopping them. He even ate the cabbage hearts like fruit. Speaking of fruit, Song Yan could always find good stuff on the black market; those apples and red dates were incredibly rare.

When Lao Liao sat on the heated kang (a traditional heated brick bed) for the first time, peeling pine nuts, he was so happy he wanted to cry.

In winter, who among the villagers would want to come out? The ideological education conference became a mere formality.

Among those who were content was Aunt Wei. Everything at home—food, clothing, and daily necessities—was better than before. She herself was practically buried in the ground, so she didn't care what happened; the children certainly weren't lacking in food. Just look at the round little faces of Wei An and Wei Ping.

Children who eat well when they are young will grow up to be strong and healthy.

The brigade distributed grain and slaughtered a pig. No one else got as much flour as her family, and Song Yan also wanted a lot of pork. They had to negotiate several times over the corn, sorghum, and soybeans. Aiguo and Song Yan used all their work points from cutting grass. Many villagers were envious.

Some people couldn't help but gossip in Aunt Wei's ear, "Your wife doesn't know how to manage a household, she's too greedy!"

Aunt Wei didn't believe her. "What's there to be afraid of? My daughter-in-law has work points in the weaving group. We can earn enough money. Besides, my wife gets a stipend for being patriotic."

That's for sure! Song Yan received a full year's worth of work points from the brigade because of the cattails. She even earned work points from the weaving group! If their own daughter-in-law could earn that much, she could also ask for grain without restraint. None of their own sons could earn that much!

"All the money in my family has to be handed over to me, I'm destined to worry about everything! My daughter-in-law is useless and can't manage the household!"

Aunt Wei: "Song Yan is a good housekeeper, I don't need to worry about him. Just give me ten yuan a month for pocket money!"

Ten yuan a month? That's 120 yuan a year. Oh my, how many families don't even earn 120 yuan in total? That's for the whole family.

The gossipy people have all shut up.

Aunt Wei was already very content with how well Aiguo treated Wei Ping and Wei An when he was at home. Now, Song Yan is even more devoted to the children. She won't have to worry about them not growing up when she passes away. She is incredibly content now, and no amount of sowing discord will change that!

Song Yan overthinks things. Giving Lao Han and the others so much grain, it would be unreasonable for her own family to ask for less when it comes to their share. Lao Zeng and Lao Du aren't her mothers-in-law; she doesn't need to say anything, she'll already suspect something's amiss. Even Xiao Xiao will start to feel something's wrong after a while.

Aunt Wei said to Song Yan, "Don't we have grain at home? She pointed to the granary and asked, 'What do we need so much grain for?'"

Song Yan also lowered her voice and said to her mother-in-law, "Now every family is short of food. Even those who receive a salary in the county are in the same situation. I can take the food to Director Sun's house to exchange for things, which is much cheaper than buying them."

Aunt Wei was timid and a little scared, but Song Yan comforted her, "It's okay, I'm just exchanging things, not selling them for money."

The whole family has snacks to eat: steamed rice cakes, mung bean cakes, candies, hawthorn slices, canned goods, apples, dates, grilled fish slices... so many delicious things that Aunt Wei had never eaten before.

Aunt Wei felt a little distressed; how much grain that must have taken! Every time Song Yan went to the county, he carried a large basket on his back.
