Most of the sleeping soldiers had their internal organs shattered by the blast wave in their sleep, spitting out large amounts of blood from their mouths and noses, and died silently; some were buried under the collapsed walls, with only one arm still in a struggling position showing.

The soldiers who managed to escape had their clothes torn to charred strips by the blast wave and flames, with large areas of their skin peeled off, revealing bright red flesh.
