Orphaned and working tirelessly for three years, I finally bought my own house only to face the apocalypse. For the second time, I must endure the same catastrophic disaster.
But this time I ...
"Of course! The village chief is our idol. She knows everything and gives us lessons every day. She says that even though it's the apocalypse, learning can't stop..."
"The village chief led us to grow vegetables and grains, the elderly in the family farmed, we learned and helped at the same time, and the able-bodied people went out to find supplies..."
"We also raise rabbits and pigs, and we can eat meat once a month..."
"How many people are there in your village now? Do they all work together?" Xu Lin asked.
“There were originally more than 300 people, but before the apocalypse, they all went out to work, leaving more than 80 people in the village. After the extreme cold and heat, several elderly people passed away, so now there are only more than 60 people left. We all work together and are distributed according to our work.”
"That's great, I got to experience the history of communal dining."
I chatted with a few teenagers for a while, and they all spoke highly of the village chief. Despite their young age, they didn't say a single thing they shouldn't have. However, Xu Lin still managed to glean some valuable information from them.
During the heavy rain, the village chief organized the villagers to move to the mountain. They spent the extreme cold and heat on the mountain, and moved down from the mountain when the weather improved.
During the earthquake, many people living at the foot of the mountain were injured by landslides or collapsed houses. Their village escaped the disaster because they held a village meeting. When their houses collapsed, they set up tents and built wooden houses. They searched for supplies and raised livestock every day, and their lives are getting better and better.
Later, the village chief said that there was a high possibility of a tsunami after the earthquake. Since the elderly and young children couldn't go far, he took them to move to the mountain. The tsunami hit just after they moved to the mountain.
Xu Lin was very impressed with the village chief. He must have just graduated from university, passed the exam to become a village official, and led the villagers to survive in the apocalypse.
In the end, they traded ten ginseng roots for ten sets of toothpaste and toothbrushes. Xu Lin also gave them a jar of honey and some disposable toothpaste like those used in hotels, telling them they could come to the mountain to exchange supplies with them next time.
The toothpaste and toothbrush were things Xu Lin had found while searching for supplies; she had plenty in her storage space. Hearing that they still had classes, Xu Lin remembered she had many books she'd collected from bookstores in her space. She'd keep one set for herself, and trade the rest for supplies with them.
The village chief they were talking about intrigued Xu Lin, who thought he was an ambitious and promising young man, and decided to help him if she could without affecting herself.
After saying goodbye to the four boys, Xu Lin and Zhou Pin packed up their things to continue collecting supplies. Perhaps because no one lived on this mountain, they could see pheasants and rabbits every few steps. The two of them worked together to catch a small wild boar and a sheep. Xu Lin caught a pheasant by herself, intending to take it back to stew with mushrooms, while Zhou Pin caught a rabbit.
By the time they reached the summit, it was almost dark. The two found an open space, started a fire, and pitched a tent. They sat in front of the fire and roasted rabbit meat. Xu Lin had the seasonings in her spatial storage, and the rabbit skin was completely skinned, in preparation for making a rabbit skin vest when it got cold.
Zhou Pin processed the rabbit, while Xu Lin gathered firewood to build a stove and bake pancakes. Roasted rabbit meat pancakes sounded delicious. There was ready-made dough in the space, which could be taken out and used to bake pancakes directly.
After finishing their meal, the two went through the tent into the space to rest. The space only had a maximum of 720 hours; they could use it up gradually, and leaving it unused was a waste. Of course, before going in, they didn't forget to connect a surveillance camera outside the tent for peace of mind.
The next morning, the two washed up in the space and came out. Making breakfast outdoors felt more special, so they cooked a pot of porridge and heated up four steamed buns using the stove they had built the night before. Then they packed their things and prepared to go down the mountain.
