Chapter 1011 The Last Scene

The weather has turned cold again. The moist air from the south enters the north and turns into snowflakes, slowly falling from the sky, giving people a gloomy and depressing feeling.

"Huff—"

The warhorse raised its head and exhaled, then its hooves stopped, landing on the cold, hard rock, crushing the fluffy snow. The snow on the ground melted slightly in the heat from the warhorse, leaving the surface bumpy.

A group of cavalrymen who had traveled a long distance stopped on a hillside not far from the city. When they looked at the soldiers in special clothes at the city gate, they knew that the city had been controlled by the new emperor's people.

After resting and gazing on the hillside for a few minutes, the leading knight pulled down his mask, tightened his grip on the reins, then raised the iron-gray flag high and rushed down the hillside.

Afterwards, knights in worn armor followed closely behind and began to charge.

Born in the harsh and barren North, their equipment was not good either. Most of them were armor passed down from their ancestors, and some of their cloaks were very old and worn, with loose threads fluttering rapidly in the wind.

Some of the old metal shields have patterns of flowers, while others have elements such as skulls and moons, giving people a sense of antiquity.

After rushing down the hillside, the sound of rapid bell ringing was heard at the city gate, and then the new troops pulled down the barricades on the road and began to raise their muskets to aim.

The armor and metal objects on the war horses collided with each other, making a loud noise on the mountain road. As they approached, their speed became faster and faster, and the spears that were originally upright were all lowered.

The first shots rang out in a flurry, and blue smoke filled the air. Then, bullets pierced through the cold air and hit the metal armor.

The metal armor plates were dented and torn, some bullets were deflected, while others shot directly into the body, bringing up hot blood.

Then, the spear that was filled with magical power shone brightly, and the spiral stance it brought up was like a ramming horn, rushing directly at the wire-wrapped barricades and crushing them into pieces.

The wood chips flew and shattered everywhere, but the remaining parts were entangled with the wire, trapping and entangling the horse's hoof, and then it fell sideways to the ground.

With just one round of shooting, the soldiers in the front were knocked away and torn apart by the knights behind like cutting vegetables.

Different from the soldiers recruited and trained in the central region in recent years, these knights have been riding horses since childhood and patrolling the northern border. They drive away monsters, guard the fields, graze, transport goods, etc. Their riding and fighting skills are far beyond the reach of ordinary soldiers.

Perhaps there was once a group of powerful cavalry in the central region, but many of the best among them had long since disappeared on the battlefields of the expedition. Now the remaining ones have to carry out various urgent tasks and rarely gather in large numbers.

After quickly taking the city as a retreat, these knights carrying the iron-grey banners continued southward, gradually approaching the wilderness north of Crocodile Teeth Ridge.

————

On the open field, two figures were riding their horses at a fast speed, and behind them was a group of cavalrymen chasing them relentlessly.

Lily sat on the horse's back holding her child, and used her not-so-familiar driving skills to control the horse running at high speed, in an effort to shake off the black and red figures behind her.

There weren't many pursuers, only about a dozen or so, who had discovered the two of them while on patrol. Although Lily had found an opportunity to buy a rideable horse in a small village, the speed of a horse raised by an ordinary family could not compare with those of the elite knights.

Listening to the approaching pursuers from behind, the guard also showed a bitter smile. He looked at the Queen with disheveled hair beside him and the innocent young prince, and kept hesitating and making decisions in his heart.

Not everyone has enough willpower to face death calmly, and he is still young.

"I used to envy the princesses and princes in those stories, but only now do I realize that maybe I should sympathize more with the unknown little characters in those stories."

After saying this incoherent speech, the guard's horse gradually slowed down.

He did not have the courage to turn around and charge forward like Viscount Vansden did to accomplish justice, nor could he completely abandon the Queen and her son and leave their bodies in the wilderness.

This is the only way, to numb and comfort myself, let the two go first, and not give up the only remaining hope.

Sorry, I'm only human.

Comforting himself in this way, listening to the sound of horse hooves approaching from behind, the guard finally slowly placed his hand on the hilt of the sword at his waist.

Ever since he started learning sword from his elder brother at a young age, he had never felt the patterns on the hilt so greedily and clearly as he did today, the cool touch, the slightly rough cloth wrapped around the hilt, and the slight trembling of the blade sliding in the sheath.

He gradually loosened the reins with one hand, his body began to relax, and the fingers of his other hand slowly wrapped around the hilt of the sword.

My breathing began to slow down, and the snow-like chill in my lungs gradually spread to my limbs. All the scenery in my vision began to fade away, and only the sound of the wind beside my ears was so clear.

One second

Two seconds

Three seconds

Just as the pursuer behind him was about to shoot the guard in front of him, a brilliant sword light suddenly appeared.

The sword light flashed from the waist, and then cut out a long arc blade, instantly cutting off the spear that suddenly attacked from behind. Then the sword light continued to move forward, directly cutting through the Sequence 4 cavalryman, and even the other cavalryman behind was chopped off and fell off the horse.

After swinging the sword, the guard felt a sense of exhaustion yet extreme exhilaration, as if he had grasped a mysterious perception.

This time, he finally stopped hesitating, accelerated for a short distance again, and began to turn.
