Chapter 56 Investigating the Secret

Mrs. Mela hurriedly lowered her head to pick up the broken pieces of the teacup. Ceres saw this and walked forward.

"Ma'am, please sit down. I'll take care of this."

Mrs. Meera was stunned for a moment, then slowly returned to her seat, but her hands were twisted nervously and her head was lowered.

"I am very sad to hear this news. Lord Angus is a kind man, why did he suffer such a thing?" Her voice was intermittent and she seemed to be in great pain.

"Please accept my condolences." Then Loran Hill waited for Lady Meera to calm down slowly.

After a while, Mrs. Meera stopped sobbing, wiped her tears with a handkerchief, and slowly raised her head. Her eyes were a little red and swollen.

Luo Lanxier continued speaking only after seeing her slowly calm down.

"Although Lord Angus is gone, he asked me to take good care of you and your children before he died. Please rest assured."

"Thank you, thank you, Miss Lacey. I...I don't know how to repay this kindness... Please let me know if you have any requests."

"I don't have any requirements, I just want to see your child today." Loran Hill stated the main purpose of today.

"Okay, wait a moment, Dill is upstairs, I'll go call him."

"No need to be so troublesome, let's go together. It happens to be my first time here, and I'm very interested in the layout here." Loran Hill shook his head, showed a kind smile, and then stood up from the sofa.

"Okay... okay, come with me." Lady Meera hesitated, then walked in front with Loran Hill.

The building has three floors. The second floor is a bedroom, and the third floor is an attic connected to the roof, used to store sundries. The floors are all marble, and the doors, railings, and furniture are all made of mahogany. They don't look old, and should have been built in recent years.

Walking through the corridor on the second floor, at the end of a door, Mrs. Mela took out a key and opened the door. A child about 10 years old was in the room. He was lying on the ground, painting with colorful paints, and there were many colorful building blocks scattered on the ground next to him.

When the child saw the door open, he looked up and was very happy to see Mrs. Mela. He took the painting and showed it to her like a treasure.

"Mom, is my drawing beautiful?" The child was happy to see his mother suddenly appear.

A small figure was graffitied on the thick white paper, its hair exaggerated by yellow paint, and its mouth, painted light red, with the corners of its mouth parted, as if smiling. Overall, it was barely recognizable as a person, the various pigments piled up on the paper, making it look very messy.

"I'm sorry to bother you, Miss Lacey." Mrs. Mela stepped forward and quickly pulled the child over, and the painting was casually thrown aside.

"Nothing." Loran Hill walked over, picked up the painting, and asked the child.

"Who's that in the picture, Dill?"

"It's Mom."

"Why is Mom's hair yellow?"

"Because I want mommy to be like the sun, take me out... and smile. Mommy rarely smiles at me..." The child's voice was a little low.

Listening to the child's words, Mrs. Meera felt a little embarrassed and wanted to stop him, but she couldn't say it to his face.

Loran Hill didn't mean to make fun of her. She looked at the child in front of her. He was being held beside his mother. He was not very tall and his clothes were very clean. His big eyes looked straight at her with curiosity and admiration in them.

"Come, come to your sister." Loran Hill squatted down, clapped his hands, looked at the child at eye level, and a smile appeared on his face.

Mrs. Meera had no choice but to let go of the child's hand and let him walk over by himself.

Loran Hill touched Dill's head, blinked, and checked on the child.

Overall, he is relatively healthy. His features are somewhat like his mother's, softer and not as angular as Angus's.

Then there was another round of conversation. After a while, Loran Hill took out a gift box of snacks prepared for the children and invited them to move to the headquarters of the Carites Chamber of Commerce because it was safer there.

However, Mrs. Mera refused, and Loranhill didn't want to keep persuading them. Before leaving, he said that he would come to see them again after a while.

After putting on his black hooded robe again and getting on the carriage, Loran Hill slowly thought about the process of this meeting.

"Ceres, how did Mr. Angus meet Mrs. Meera back then?"

"It was at a banquet ten years ago. At that time, the master's business was beginning to flourish, and he often attended banquets from all sides. One time, he got drunk, and Miss Mela happened to be one of the guests at the banquet. She was the daughter of a small businessman."

"So, the drunken master had sex with Miss Meera. Later, Miss Meera's father wanted to send her here as a concubine to please the master. Although the master did not agree, he gave Meera's father a lot of benefits to make up for his guilt."

"As time went by, Meera's father became more and more greedy, asking for more and more, and even threatened to expose the matter to the public if the master didn't agree."

"Originally, the master was still considerate and tolerant. But after that incident, he directly sent people to take action. Madam Mela's father was almost bankrupt, and finally settled down. Madam Mela was caught in the middle. She had previously asked the master for many benefits on her father's behalf, and she was always very uneasy. Later, she even became a little afraid of the master."

"So..." Loran Hill listened to the butler Ceres's narration and always felt that there was something vague in it.

Why was Mrs. Meera more panicked than saddened when she heard the news about Angus? Why did Mrs. Meera lock Dill in a room and lock it? Was she worried or was she abusing him? Why did she refuse Loran Hill's invitation to live at the headquarters without any hesitation?

Mrs. Meera must be hiding something in her heart. There may be another hidden story between her and Angus. Loran Hill sipped his tea, thinking in his heart how to find out the truth.

After a while, she finally spoke.

"Ceres, can you arrange for someone to inquire about Madam Meera's past acquaintances? I want to know what she was like ten years ago, before she came into contact with Angus, and what happened before and after that incident."

"That's probably difficult, Miss. After all, it's been ten years."

"Even after ten years, many things will still leave traces. Send someone to investigate."

"Okay, Miss Lacey."

After returning to the headquarters mansion, Loran Hill dealt with some Chamber of Commerce matters, and then it was night. After dinner, she sat on a chair on the balcony to rest, looking at the night view of the stars and lights in the sky. The evening breeze blew, bringing a hint of coolness.

The head maid, Chelsea, gently pushed open the French window on the balcony and walked over.

"Miss, are you calling me?"

"Yes, I want to ask you for something." She paused for a moment, looking at the lights of thousands of homes in the distance, and the wind blew slowly through the woods outside the balcony.

"Send a trusted confidant to secretly investigate Butler Ceres and all the subordinates he's come into contact with over the past few days, and report back to me. You're the first to arrive in Carites, so you should have a lot of people you can trust."

Loran Hill turned his head and looked at the head maid, her soft hair dancing slowly in the night breeze.
