Chicken feet delivery, what's not to like?
This ordinary life has finally come to an end, all because Lei Yu made me a phone call.
"Fang Shuang, come here. The mastermind has reappeared."
I instinctively looked towards my chest, but the black hand was nowhere to be seen. Nevertheless, I turned on my computer, typed out a leave request, printed it out, and gave it to my boss.
My boss had a good impression of me and readily approved a week's leave, saying that I could extend it if needed. I was very touched, thinking that I might not be able to come back after this trip, but I didn't tell my boss.
Lei Yu picked me up in his car, but instead of the familiar detention center, we went to the courthouse. I don't know what kind of identification Lei Yu showed, but he took me straight to the morgue.
"Fang Shuang, take a look, is that the dark figure you're looking for?"
Lei Yu pulled a corpse out of the freezer and pointed it out to me. The forensic doctor next to him seemed to want to say something, but ultimately remained silent.
This is a headless corpse, and there's a black handprint on its chest, which looks like the black hand that's attached to me, but there are still big differences. I scratched my head and said.
"This doesn't look like it was done by the shadowy figure. The cut of this neck, how should I put it, looks like it was chewed by a dog. It's not as clean as if it was cut by a black hand."
Moreover, the mark of this black hand was very rough, quite different from a regular black hand.
"Like a temporary tattoo?" Lei Yu's words reminded me, and I nodded hurriedly. Compared to the all-consuming darkness of the Black Hand, the black handprints on this corpse looked like kindergarten children's drawings.
Lei Yu looked serious and walked over to pat me on the shoulder.
"If you don't think so, then you agree with me. Be careful when you go back these days."
"What do you mean?" I was a little curious. Since the Black Hand disappeared inexplicably, there weren't many things that could bring me fear. There was something hidden in Lei Yu's words that made my hair stand on end.
“I smelled a familiar scent on this corpse. I’ve dealt with those kinds of people a lot, what people in society call scum.”
Chapter Sixteen: The Spread of Madness
Why does Lei Yu talk like he's bragging? But I trust Lei Yu's intuition. He believed me even when almost all the evidence was against me. He's no ordinary person, and I even admire him a little.
"Do you know that several of your cases have become legendary? Now a..."
Your story has gone viral online; some people are saying you're the most intelligent criminal in history.
Lei Yu snorted coldly at this point and continued speaking.
"Because of the legendary nature of the case and your so-called escape from justice, you now have quite a few fans, and you even have a nickname, the Plague Death."
"No way..." I felt a little uneasy. Had I become such a celebrity without even realizing it? If Shui Yanling found out, would she look down on me? "You underestimated the public's curiosity. What's worse, someone posted photos of the real case online. There are some virtual places on the internet that we can't monitor. The consequences are terrible. Your admirers are starting to cause trouble."
As Lei Yu was talking, he handed me a piece of paper. I opened it and saw a sentence written on it.
You will never find out who I am.
It was clumsy, but enough to push the police to their limits.
Some in the police department firmly believe this is a new tactic of yours, while our faction thinks it's a copycat.
"Headless corpse, black handprints, provoking the police."
A chill ran down my spine. Anyone who's lived a peaceful life for too long can't stand someone constantly smearing them! I have a fiancée now, I can't stay in the police station any longer! "So what can I do?" "You don't need to do anything. We'll arrange for people to monitor you, just in case. After all, your identity is circulating online, and your die-hard fans will probably come looking for you, and among them, there might be the real murderer."
"After I got out, I was still in a daze. I'm just an ordinary person who wants to live a normal life. Does buying a few bottles of water at the subway station mean that a peaceful life is off my side?! This world is really scary. Ghosts have some reason, but humans only need pure malice."
I started to get agitated. I had already taken the day off and didn't need to go to the company. I didn't want to go back to my rented apartment either, because I didn't want to bring this disastrous situation to Shui Yanling. I could only wander aimlessly around the city.
"Yanling, I'm going on a business trip for the next few days and won't be back. You don't need to wait for me..." After making a phone call and explaining things to Shui Yanling, I found a hotel to stay in. It wouldn't be good to exhaust the police officers who were following and monitoring me, so it was better for me to stay quiet and not move.
After staying for a few days, no one contacted me. I desperately missed Shui Yanling's hot meals and her words, "You're back." I never realized I was such a vulnerable person, but now all I wanted was to be back by her side, to just hold her and sleep, and do nothing else.
No! What if that criminal only knows the address of my rented apartment? Wouldn't Yanling be in danger? This terrible thought suddenly filled my mind. Right, how could I be so stupid! I didn't even notice that! Thinking of this, I hurriedly left the room.
I hailed a taxi on the street and headed towards my old rented apartment.
Hey buddy, what are you doing going to such a far place so late at night? "Changping is quite remote, and I didn't check the time when I left. It was already past midnight, and the subway had stopped running. It's normal for the taxi driver to be curious."
