Wasabi Shrimp Balls
Shen Tinghe walked out of the school gate with her bag on her back, her hair simply clipped behind her head, her eyes lingering at the entrance.
A black Audi with its hazard lights flashing was parked on the side of the road. Shen Tinghe opened the car door and got in, casually placing her bag on the back seat.
What brings you here?
During class, she received a text message from Chen Rancheng asking what time get out of class would end. Without thinking much about it, she sent him the end time.
Just before get out of class ended, she received another text message from him telling her he was at the school gate. Shen Tinghe didn't reply, but her hands moved faster without her noticing.
"I'll take you out to eat." Chen Rancheng looked at the car in the rearview mirror, shifted gears, and blended into the traffic.
There was a faint smell of smoke in the car, mixed with the jasmine fragrance from the display stand, but it wasn't very noticeable.
Shen Tinghe turned her head to look at him. Chen Rancheng stared intently ahead, his profile smooth, with a sharp jaw and a straight nose.
"Your eyelashes are so long."
Chen Rancheng glanced at her with a smile, as if to say, "You only just realized this after all this time?"
Shen Tinghe had noticed this before, but she sensed that his mood was a bit strange, so she made up an excuse to tease him.
"Let's go to the supermarket. I recently learned a new dish, and I'll show you how to make it."
Just as they reached the fork in the road, Shen Tinghe pointed to the right and said, "Turn right, turn right, there's a big supermarket over there."
Chen Rancheng obediently turned on his turn signal. He was like a child waiting to be taken home, obediently following instructions.
The two walked from the parking lot toward the supermarket entrance, with Shen Tinghe in front and Chen Rancheng following behind.
Seeing Shen Tinghe inspecting the supermarket branch ahead of him, who had only parked the car for a short while before running off, Chen Rancheng took her hand and quickened his pace.
"If you get lost again."
Chen Rancheng's hands were large, unlike hers, which were small and held in her hands.
Shen Tinghe leaned closer and glared at him, "Am I a child?" She tightened her grip and pinched him hard.
She tried her best, but Chen Rancheng felt like she was being tickled. However, he pretended to be in a lot of pain and whined pitifully, "It hurts so much."
Shen Tinghe rolled her eyes speechlessly. "Chen Rancheng, you're so cunning."
She actually wanted to tell him about tea, but she was afraid he might not understand due to the generation gap.
Shen Tinghe was preparing to make wasabi shrimp balls, so she went straight to the seafood section and grabbed a box of large shrimp. After that, she moved on to the spice section to find wasabi.
Before she could find the mustard, she turned around and saw the pepper powder. "Do you have any pepper powder at home?" Shen Tinghe asked, holding up a can of pepper powder and shaking it.
Pepper powder isn't cheap, so if we have it, we can hold off on buying it for now.
Chen Ran thought for a moment, then said, "Take it."
Shen Tinghe picked up the pepper powder next to her and compared them, putting the more expensive one back.
Chen Rancheng watched her movements closely. "Take it, I'll pay."
She straightened the pepper powder she had put back. She knew that when she came out with Chen Rancheng, he wouldn't let her spend money, but whose money comes from thin air?
This has been her habit since childhood: to compare prices from three different vendors before buying anything and choose the one with the highest cost-performance ratio.
Chen Rancheng didn't understand, and she wouldn't argue with him. Everyone's upbringing is different, and their values are different too.
Chen Rancheng pushed the shopping cart behind her. When they passed the home furnishing section, he picked up two sets of bedding. Shen Tinghe walked a while and was about to put the things in the cart when she realized that Chen Rancheng was gone.
I went back to look for it and saw two sets of bedding in the shopping cart. I wondered, "Why did you buy this? Don't you have any at home?"
Chen Rancheng took the things from her and put them in the car. "Keep some consumables on hand."
Why are bedding items consumables? Just as she was about to ask, she met his smiling dark eyes. A flash of inspiration struck her, her ears turned red, and she glared at him.
"Which one looks better?" Chen Rancheng asked Chen Tinghe, looking at the items on the shelf and in the bicycle basket.
"Why are you asking me if you're sleeping!" she said, taking two big steps forward and walking away.
When paying the bill, Shen Tinghe saw women's cotton slippers in the bicycle basket. "You still have cotton slippers?" It was still early before winter.
"I just grabbed it when I saw it. You don't have any slippers, do you?" He's only been to the supermarket a handful of times. There was a whole shelf of slippers hanging in the household goods section, and he realized he didn't seem to have any at home.
Shen Tinghe nodded, her gaze lingering for a moment.
She probably won't be in Paris in winter.
Professor Terence is getting old and has brought forward the graduation dates of her students. Her thesis is also in its final stages.
The shrimp she bought were still alive. Shen Tinghe poured the shrimp into a basin, filled it with water, put on disposable gloves, and began to process them.
She loves eating shrimp and has her own great way of peeling them. She can quickly remove the shrimp vein and open the shrimp back.
The oil in the pan was heating on the gas stove, sizzling and bubbling. Shen Tinghe tentatively put a chopstick in, but as soon as it touched the oil, she quickly pulled it back.
She was a little hesitant.
Her eyes were fixed on Chen Rancheng standing at the door. He had just tried to come in to help, but she had ruthlessly driven him out.
With a pleading look in my eyes, I took back what I had just said.
Chen Rancheng picked up the shrimp balls that were already coated in cornstarch from the table and pulled Shen Tinghe behind him, saying, "Stand back, don't get splashed."
Seeing that she had moved away, he put the shrimp balls into the oil one by one, leaving the deep-frying task to him, while Shen Tinghe started to prepare the wasabi sauce.
Actually, Shen Tinghe can't cook, and this was the first time she had made this dish, but watching the video was the same as knowing how, so she confidently mixed the sauce.
When Chen Rancheng saw that she had squeezed out a large dollop of mustard, he felt that this matter was not simple, and he did not say that he would let her mess around.
After the shrimp balls were fried again, they were placed on absorbent paper to drain the oil. Chen Rancheng dipped a little sauce in his chopsticks and put it in his mouth. Shen Tinghe blinked at him, expecting praise. "How is it?"
The pungent smell of wasabi rushed into his nostrils. Chen Rancheng endured it and nodded affirmatively, "Not bad, you should try it."
"Really?" Shen Tinghe took the chopsticks and dipped them in the sauce.
At first, before the wasabi flavor hit her, her eyes sparkled with joy, but the next second, glistening tears welled up in them.
Her upper and lower eyelashes fluttered, and a tear rolled down her cheek. Shen Tinghe exhaled through her open mouth, "It's actually not bad."
She picked up a shrimp ball, dipped it thoroughly in the sauce, and brought it to Chen Rancheng's lips, "Ah—"
