Chapter 42 His Frantic Search

Song Yunzheng searched for her frantically outside, in the residential area, on the streets, at intersections—everywhere she might have gone, everywhere she might have gone. The empty roads were deserted; apart from the streetlights, there wasn't a soul in sight. He slammed his fist on the steering wheel in anger, "Lin Yue! Where did you go?"

He had never felt so anxious and helpless; he didn't know where to look for her.

On the empty street, a black Bentley Mulsanne was crawling along. He drove very slowly, his eyes fixed on the outside, afraid of missing any corner where Lin Yue might be hiding.

This girl went too far this time. It's one thing to disobey him and rummage through things, but to run out alone in the middle of the night without her phone is unforgivable. She's not learning anything good but running away from home.

His eyes were bloodshot. He had rushed out without wearing enough warm clothes; he was only wearing a shirt under his coat. He seemed oblivious to the cold, searching aimlessly until the sky began to lighten.

Suddenly, as if remembering something, Song Yunzheng slammed on the gas and drove towards the nearest police station. If he couldn't find it by himself, he would ask the police for help.

When the car arrived at the police station, Song Yunzheng slammed on the brakes and stopped at the entrance. He got out of the car and rushed into the duty room without even closing the door, shouting, "I need to call the police!"

The police officer was quite startled by his anxious appearance and quickly comforted him, "Sir, please calm down and tell me slowly."

Song Yunzheng struggled to control his panic, his voice trembling slightly, "My wife is missing, I need to call the police!"

What was the exact time of the disappearance?

“She has been missing all night.”

"Sir, a case can only be filed if a person has been missing for more than 24 hours. Please think carefully about where your wife might have gone."

"Wait a minute, do you live in Courtyard No. 1?" Another police officer suddenly interrupted their questioning.

Song Yunzheng looked at him and nodded, "Yes."

“Around 1 a.m. yesterday, I was patrolling that area when I saw a little girl lingering by the intersection for a long time. I asked her if something had happened, and she said she was just going downstairs to throw out the trash and take a walk. Then she turned around and ran back. But she looked so young, like a high school student. I wonder if she is your wife?”

These words gave Song Yunzheng a lot of hope. The police had most likely seen her, empty-handed, wandering the roadside, and afraid to admit to the police that she ran away after arguing with her husband, fearing she'd lose face, so she just made up some excuse. Wasn't that exactly her style? It had to be her; she had nowhere to go, so she must have gone home in the end!

After thanking him hastily, Song Yunzheng drove home anxiously. He hadn't slept all night, and his eyes were sore and tired, but he wasn't sleepy at all; all he felt was worry.

On a deep winter morning, it was past seven o'clock, but the sky was still barely bright. The trees on both sides of the street had long since turned to bare trunks, and the snow on the ground had frozen into ice, giving people a desolate feeling.

With a "ding," the elevator doors slowly opened. Song Yunzheng quickly stepped out of the elevator and turned around to see Lin Yue sitting on the ground, her body pressed tightly against the door, curled up in a ball, looking pitiful. Just as the police had predicted, she had gone home by herself.

Song Yunzheng quickly walked forward and gently patted her arm. "Lin Yue, wake up. Why are you sleeping here?" His voice was low and hoarse, as if he was suppressing his dissatisfaction and anger. He had been searching for her outside all night like a madman, but she was just sitting at the door, fast asleep.

He touched her forehead; it was burning hot, but her hands were ice-cold. The chill went straight to his heart, and his heart clenched. She had a fever! His anger towards her vanished instantly, and he quickly picked her up.

Suddenly suspended in mid-air, startling Lin Yue awake. She groggily opened her eyes and, upon seeing Song Yunzheng's devilishly handsome face, asked in a hoarse voice, "Where did you go? Why didn't you open the door for me? I'm freezing to death." Her eyes reddened, and she felt extremely wronged; her voice involuntarily carried a hint of a sob.

Looking at her haggard appearance, Song Yunzheng's anger flared even more. He angrily pinched her cheek. "I went out to look for you, how could I open the door for you? I looked for you all night, do you know that? I almost called the police. How could you go out without your phone?" He had spent the whole night looking for you and worrying all night.

Hearing his words, Lin Yue felt a surge of emotion. He really had gone out to look for her, and had searched all night. Seeing his exhausted face, bloodshot eyes, and short stubble on his chin, the grievances in her heart instantly vanished.

"You really deserve a beating!" Song Yunzheng really wanted to spank her, but remembering that she still had a fever, he couldn't muster any anger. He instantly softened, quickly opened the door, and carried her back to the room.

He quickly wrapped her in the blanket, leaving only her small head sticking out. He gazed at her flushed face, his heart filled with tenderness, but he couldn't help but gently scold her: "Now you know how uncomfortable it is, right? You must never do such a foolish thing again, not knowing how to cherish your body at all."

"I'm already sick, why are you still talking to me so fiercely?" Lin Yue looked at him pitifully, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Of course you have to tell them. If you don't, they won't learn their lesson and will run off again next time."

Lin Yue pouted, looking aggrieved, and muttered, "So petty."

"Do you think I can't hear you just because you're speaking softly?" Song Yunzheng glared at her fiercely. "I'll go run you a bath. A hot bath can help lower your temperature and reduce your fever."
