Chapter 21: Chase in the Dark Alley, Crisis Escalates

Lu Zhaoming grabbed Su Li, and the two of them, like two eels, darted into the dark depths of the subway tunnel.

"No way, bro, what's the difference between this and a rat hole?" Su Li complained as she ran, her high heels almost falling off.

"Shh! Keep your voice down, don't attract the mice, I'm afraid you can't handle the shock." Lu Zhaoming lowered his voice, not forgetting to tease him.

Behind him, the gunshots gradually faded into the distance, but Lu Zhaoming knew that the pursuers would not give up easily.

He secretly activated the "Doomsday Judgment System" to scan the surrounding area.

"System, show me what kind of demons and monsters are behind me."

On the system interface, several red dots rapidly approached.

"Target locked: Member of Project Sky Dome, leader codename 'Old Wolf', danger level: high."

"Project Sky Dome? Sounds like some kind of chuunibyou (middle school syndrome) organization." Lu Zhaoming curled his lip, but the code name "Old Wolf" made his heart skip a beat; it was definitely not a good guy.

"Old Wolf, former mercenary leader, is proficient in various assassination techniques and skilled in utilizing terrain," the system thoughtfully added.

"Damn, he's a pro." Lu Zhaoming thought to himself, this is getting a bit troublesome.

Sure enough, not long after, the footsteps behind them approached again.

"Search separately, don't miss any corner!" A deep voice came, carrying an unquestionable authority.

"Oh ho, quite organized." Lu Zhaoming sneered, pulling Su Li into a corner piled with clutter.

"I'm saying, are we just going to keep hiding? That's not my style." Su Li was clearly very dissatisfied with this passive and defensive situation.

"Don't worry, I have a brilliant plan." Lu Zhaoming smiled mysteriously, a sly glint in his eyes.

The two arrived at a narrow fork in the road.

Lu Zhaoming stopped and took out a flashbang from his backpack.

"Hold on tight!" he shouted, pulling the pin on the flashbang and throwing it towards the pursuers.

"Bang!"

A blinding light instantly illuminated the entire tunnel, followed by a deafening explosion.

"Ah!" The pursuers screamed in pain, clearly caught off guard by the sudden attack.

"Now! Run!" Lu Zhaoming shouted, pulling Su Li along as they sprinted down another side road.

Taking advantage of the moment when the pursuers were distracted by the flashbang, he activated the system and scanned the surrounding terrain.

"The scan results show that there is an abandoned ventilation duct ahead, which can bypass the enemy's blockade."

"A ventilation duct? Are you serious? Can you even climb up that thing?" Su Li asked skeptically.

"Trust me, there won't be any problems," Lu Zhaoming said, already climbing up to the entrance of the ventilation duct.

The ventilation ducts were old and rusty, creaking as you climbed on them, and looked like they might collapse at any moment.

"Hey, are you sure this thing is reliable? I feel like it's going to fall apart," Su Li complained as she climbed, afraid of falling.

"Hang in there, we'll be there soon," Lu Zhaoming comforted him, though he himself felt a little uneasy.

However, just as they were about to climb to the exit of the ventilation duct, the system suddenly issued a warning.

"Warning! High-energy weapon locked on. Take evasive action immediately!"

Lu Zhaoming's expression changed, and he tackled Su Li to the ground.

"Whoosh!"

A beam of purple light grazed past their feet, instantly piercing through the wall of the ventilation duct and leaving a charred hole.

"Holy crap! What the hell?" Lu Zhaoming was so scared that he broke out in a cold sweat. If he got hit by that, he would be crippled if not killed.

"It's some kind of tracker or long-range weapon," the system analyzed.

"That old wolf actually has such a treasure." Lu Zhaoming cursed inwardly, becoming even more vigilant.

He quickly rummaged through his backpack, hoping to find something he could use.

Suddenly, his eyes lit up as he spotted the communicator he had previously seized from Xiao Qi.

"Got it!" Lu Zhaoming's lips curled up slightly, revealing a wicked smile.

He quickly disassembled and reassembled the communicator, and using the technology provided by the system, created a simple jammer.

"Jitter activated, blocking tracking signals," the system notification read.

"Done!" Lu Zhaoming breathed a sigh of relief, finally shaking off the pursuers for the time being.

"Where should we go now?" Su Li asked.

"Let's go somewhere they'd never expect." Lu Zhaoming smiled mysteriously, then pulled Su Li into an underground drainage ditch.

This drainage ditch reeks of sewage, and is practically a giant septic tank.

"No way, big brother, are you sure we can walk here?" Su Li covered her nose, looking disgusted.

"There's no other way. To survive, I have to make do." Lu Zhaoming shrugged and jumped down first.

The two struggled through the sewage, surrounded by darkness, with only the sound of flowing water and the occasional squeaking of rats to be heard.

"Hey, where are we going? Are we going to explore the sewers?" Su Li couldn't help but complain.

"We're almost there, hang in there," Lu Zhaoming comforted him, though he himself felt a little uncertain.

Suddenly, he stopped and pointed to a corner ahead, saying, "There seems to be something there."

As the two approached, they discovered a corpse lying there.

"What the heck?!" Su Li exclaimed in fright and quickly hid behind Lu Zhaoming.

Lu Zhaoming squatted down and carefully examined the corpse.

“It’s that surviving businessman who went missing a few days ago,” he said, frowning.
