Chapter 8: Surgery for Him!
The man let out a painful groan as the cold scalpel sliced through his flesh, and his body trembled violently, but he quickly stopped moving.
Su Yue held her breath, her eyes fixed intently on the wound. Her hand was steady, like a precision instrument, avoiding blood vessels and nerves, and accurately probing the trajectory of the bullet.
In his hazy state, the man felt an indescribable, excruciating pain, but strangely, he didn't make a sound. He forced his eyes open, and through his blurred vision, he could only see a slender figure leaning over his wound, focused and calm.
Her profile was as white as jade, with a fine bead of sweat on her forehead, outlined by the dim light with a soft halo. Her eyelashes were long, casting a fan-shaped shadow beneath her eyes. Her movements were gentle yet carried a professional strength; each time she stopped the bleeding, each time she explored, it seemed to alleviate some of his pain.
The pain was real. But he was deeply attracted by the delicate face so close to his. Her eyes reflected the candlelight, bright and clear, as if they could dispel all darkness.
He actually felt that looking at her made the excruciating pain less unbearable. She was the best anesthetic.
Fine beads of sweat appeared on Su Yue's forehead. Finally, she managed to pull a deformed bullet from deep within the wound. With a "thud," the bullet landed on the tray beside her, making a crisp sound.
"Okay." She let out a long sigh, her voice carrying a hint of weariness, yet also filled with a sense of relief.
She picked up the suture needle and began to stitch the wound. Her movements were practiced and skillful; with each stitch, the wound healed little by little. The man remained motionless throughout, his deep eyes fixed intently on her.
As the last needle was inserted, Su Yue looked up and met the man's burning eyes. His gaze was so direct and intense that it made her heart skip a beat, and a wave of heat instantly spread to her cheeks.
She abruptly lowered her eyes, hiding her flushed face in the shadows, and said in a somewhat unnatural tone, "The wound has been treated. Rest well and don't move around too much for now."
The man seemed not to hear her words; his gaze remained fixed on her sweat-dampened collar. There, a patch of skin was faintly visible, and in the center, a faint pink heart-shaped mark appeared and disappeared.
His eyes instantly became complicated, flashing with an incredulous shock and a strong sense of familiarity that made his heart ache.
Heart-shaped... birthmark?
He had a long dream, in which there was a blurry figure with what appeared to be a diamond-shaped birthmark on her wrist. That birthmark always shone brightly in the dream, guiding him. He had never taken the dream seriously, but now, seeing that mark on her body, a strong intuition told him—it was her!
But why is it a rhombus in the dream, but a heart shape in reality? Did he remember it wrong, or...?
His mind was a blur, the intense blood loss and pain blurring his consciousness once more. He reached out sharply, wanting to touch the mark, but his hand fell limply to his side in mid-air.
"I...I..." The man only managed to utter two weak sounds before falling into unconsciousness again.
Su Yue was startled and quickly checked his condition. She found that he had just fainted again and his vital signs were stable, so she breathed a sigh of relief.
She quickly bandaged his wounds, then took out a bottle of special nutrient solution from her spatial storage and fed it to him. After doing all this, she wiped the sweat from her forehead and glanced at the unconscious man on the ground.
"I'm leaving now," she whispered to him as he lay unconscious. "I'll bring you some more supplies and medicine tomorrow."
She quickly cleaned up all traces in the room, putting the medical equipment and operating table back into her storage space, and even cleaning up the bloodstains on the floor. Once she was sure the room was back to normal, she gently opened the door and, like a nimble cat, slipped out silently.
The next morning, Su Yue cautiously returned to the abandoned house.
The main house door was ajar, and sunlight slanted into the empty main hall, dust motes floating in the beams of light. The house was empty except for a few cotton swabs left over from treating wounds. She stepped forward and gently touched them with her toe to make sure there was no blood left.
The man left.
He left no words behind, but the cleanliness of the scene and the faint scent of herbs indicated that he had not slipped away quietly, but had been properly taken away.
After a moment's thought, Su Yue understood—he must have already reunited with his subordinates and been safely transferred to a sanatorium for treatment.
Now that everyone was safe, Su Yue had no intention of lingering. She put the cotton swabs back into her spatial storage and carefully checked them again to make sure no traces were missed. Mission accomplished, it was time to go home.
She climbed over the wall and returned to the Su family's old house along the same path she had come from.
As soon as I stepped into the courtyard, an eerie atmosphere enveloped me. At this time of day, the old house was usually quiet, with only servants busy at work. But today, a noisy argument could be heard, the sound faintly coming from the direction of Lin Xiuzhen's bedroom.
Su Yue's heart skipped a beat. Weren't that mother and daughter supposed to be going to her second uncle's house? Why are they back so soon?
"Mom, why are you back? I was just about to call you. I'm going to Hainan Island soon, right? The conditions there must be terrible, so I need to prepare some decent things. The five thousand yuan my dad gave me and those tickets definitely won't be enough. You must have some good stuff in your safe, right?" Her tone was suggestive and eager, as if reminding Lin Xiuzhen that it was only right to give her "good stuff."
Lin Xiuzhen was indeed wavering. She knew that Su Yue was now a hot commodity in Su Guohua's eyes, and since things had come to this point, she couldn't refuse her. She just hoped to send Su Yue away as soon as possible. She planned to find a way to recover the stolen goods after sending Su Yue to Hainan Island.
“Yes, Mom, my sister is going to Hainan Island, she definitely needs something to protect herself.” Lin Wan’er chimed in, convinced that Su Yue was trying to trick Lin Xiuzhen into revealing information so she could get a share of the spoils.
Lin Xiuzhen gritted her teeth and pulled Su Yue towards the bedroom: "Come on, Yueyue, let Mom show you. What do you want? Mom will give you whatever she can!" She planned to appease Su Yue with a few less expensive items first.
In the bedroom, Lin Xiuzhen walked to the dressing table. The safe key she kept was hidden in a secret compartment of a decorative box. Her hands trembled as she took out the key and said to Su Yue, "This is my secret stash of money. I started saving it before I got married. I originally planned to... keep it for you and Wan'er."
