Apocalypse + Rebirth + Other Dimension Stockpiling + Base Building + No System + No Superpowers + No Zombies
On July 5, 2025, a beam of high-energy particles pierced the sun, instantly draini...
Just as peace returned to inside the sled caravan, a commotion broke out outside.
Chen Yu frowned and glanced at Qi Xiaowei.
Qi Xiaowei understood. He nodded slightly, then took out the walkie-talkie and said in a low, powerful voice, "What's going on outside? Why is it so noisy?"
Soon, a reply came from the other end of the walkie-talkie: "There are a few refugees begging for food. We'll drive them away right away."
"Okay, deal with it quickly," Qi Xiaowei said.
"Wait a minute," Chen Yu said.
"Attention, do not take any action for now," Qi Xiaowei quickly instructed the person on the other end.
Then she looked at Chen Yu: "Mr. Chen, what do you mean...?"
"Let's go take a look first," Chen Yu said, getting up and putting on his winter coat.
Upon seeing this, Qi Xiaowei quickly opened the door for Chen Yu.
A biting cold wind swept over him instantly, as if cutting with a knife, but Chen Yu was already used to it.
He stepped out of the RV and, led by the militiamen, came to the perimeter of the convoy. There he saw several thinly dressed, haggard-looking refugees huddled in the snow. There were old and young, men and women, and their eyes were filled with helplessness and longing.
"General."
"General."
…………
Upon seeing Chen Yu emerge in person, the militia members stood at attention and saluted, their faces filled with awe and loyalty to their leader. Chen Yu nodded slightly in response, his gaze never leaving the refugees.
"What's going on?" Chen Yu asked a 'militia' officer, his tone carrying an unquestionable air of authority.
The officer immediately stepped forward and respectfully replied, "Reporting to the general, according to these refugees, they fled from the nearby city of Guangping..."
Before the officer could finish speaking, an elderly refugee stood up tremblingly. His voice, though weak, was full of pleading: "Sir, please have mercy and give us something to eat. We haven't eaten for days."
Chen Yu's gaze lingered on the old man's face for a moment; he could sense the despair and pleading in the man's words.
He sighed inwardly and said to the militiamen, "Give them some food and hot water first."
"Yes, General!" Several soldiers quickly sprang into action.
Next, the refugees were taken to a makeshift snow pit, a temporary shelter with a fire and tents that could provide them with some warmth and protection.
The soldiers handed them steaming hot rice porridge and steamed buns.
The refugees devoured their food, their faces showing a long-lost sense of satisfaction.
Chen Yu stood aside, silently observing everything.
In this extremely cold and apocalyptic world, the law and social order have completely collapsed. Ordinary people would avoid a large armed force like Chen Yu's at all costs.
These refugees must have been truly desperate to come here begging for food, hoping to find a glimmer of hope.
"General, there's something I'm not sure if I should say," Qi Xiaowei said in a low voice, his expression grave.
"Speak," Chen Yu said calmly.
“In this environment, there are refugees everywhere, and countless people freeze to death and starve to death every day. Our ‘Tianyu Base’ also has limited resources, so there is really no need to waste resources on these old, weak, sick and disabled people,” Qi Xiaowei said with a wry smile.
Chen Yu nodded upon hearing this. Qi Xiaowei was right; there were so many refugees in the world that he couldn't possibly save them all.
But now that he's run into it, he can't just ignore it.
Those below him can turn a blind eye to this, but he alone cannot.
Chen Yu knew that as a leader, every action he took would affect the moral standards of the entire base and his image in the eyes of his subordinates.
“Minister Qi,” Chen Yu said slowly, his voice revealing a hint of determination, “I know our resources are precious, but what measures a base is not only its material reserves, but also its spirit and values. We help these people today not only out of compassion, but also to uphold the justice and beliefs in our hearts.”
Upon hearing Chen Yu's words, a hint of shame flashed in Qi Xiaowei's eyes: "This subordinate understands."
Chen Yu turned his gaze to the refugees again.
Seeing that everyone had almost finished eating, he finally asked, "Since you are from Guangping City, why are you in this desolate wilderness?"
Upon hearing this, the refugees seemed to have their deepest fears touched, their eyes flashing with unease and panic. One of the women burst into tears, crying out, "Chief, there is a group of demons in Guangping City! We beg you to act on behalf of Heaven and do justice for us!"
Chen Yu frowned upon hearing this: "What's going on?"
The woman choked back tears as she recounted the horrific scene in Guangping City: "Those thugs, they occupied the city, burning, killing, looting, and committing all sorts of atrocities. We ordinary people had no power to resist. They not only stole our food and property, but also kidnapped our children and young women, treating them as slaves and playthings. And they... they..."
As the woman spoke, her voice trembled even more violently, as if she were thinking of something extremely terrifying.
The others were also trembling, their eyes filled with fear.
Finally, an old man tremblingly took over the conversation, his eyes filled with despair and resentment: "Those people are a bunch of demons. Those who are captured by them could be eaten by them at any time!"
Chen Yu's expression gradually turned serious. In the extreme cold of the apocalypse, cannibalism was not uncommon, but the scale of this incident, where an entire city's survivors were used as food reserves, was extremely rare, especially given that the apocalypse had only been going on for a few months. It was truly horrifying.
