The stars were picked up, and the five-and-a-half-year-old baby girl was beautiful, with soft, tender flesh.
The emaciated villagers in the starving year: ...
What did this child eat to...
As dusk fell, Zhou Laoda's oxcart and the village chief's donkey cart returned to the village one after the other. The former took Zhou Lao Er's family to the door of Old Zhou's house. Although the people had returned this time, their belongings were still in the rented house in town. Apart from a few sets of clothes, they hadn't brought anything else.
Zhou Dafa is still unable to walk and can only lie in bed every day, but he can already turn over by himself. Zhou Lao Er is holding his son, and Chen Caocao is leading Zhou Daya to knock on the door.
"Who is it? Which glutton chooses to come looking for someone during mealtime? It's so annoying!" Old Mrs. Zhou cursed as she ran to open the door.
Upon seeing the people outside the door, Old Mrs. Zhou was stunned for a moment, but quickly her face darkened and she began to curse, "Second son, what are you doing back here? You've been living comfortably with the fifty taels of silver your two younger brothers borrowed from other families, haven't you? You haven't contacted the family for months, what are you doing back now?"
"Get out, get far away from me! I don't have a son like you. Take your good-for-nothing son and get out of the Zhou family. We've already divided the family property; you have no share in this family."
Chen Caocao and Zhou Daya glared at Old Lady Zhou with resentment, but Old Lady Zhou didn't care what they thought of her. She stomped her feet and continued to curse: "You two sluts dare to come back? Who told you to come back? You've grown up and settled down in town. If you're so capable, don't ever come back. Even if you do, we won't acknowledge you."
Originally, Zhou Lao Er and Chen Cao Cao did not want to argue with Zhou Lao Tai, but Zhou Lao Tai picked up a broom and was about to kick them out. Zhou Lao Er put Zhou Da Fa into Chen Cao Cao's arms.
Then he stepped forward to snatch the broom from Old Lady Zhou's hand. Old Lady Zhou was shorter than him and not as strong. No matter how much she threw a tantrum, it was no use. Zhou Lao Er grabbed her wrist tightly with one hand, forcefully snatched the broom, and threw it away.
"Mother, I respect you as my elder and won't argue with you. Let's stop here," Zhou Lao Er said, holding back his anger.
"You respect me and yet you dare to oppose me? I don't have a son like you. Get out of here and don't you dare set foot in the Zhou family's gate again!" Old Mrs. Zhou jumped up and down, her fingers almost poking into Zhou Lao Er's eyeballs.
“This is my home too, why can’t we come in? My wife and I have worked so hard for so many years, do we not even deserve a room to sleep in?” Zhou Lao Er suppressed his temper and spoke in a muffled voice, unlike Zhou Lao Da who would shout loudly when he got angry.
The commotion by the door quickly drew out Old Man Zhou, Zhou Laosan, Zhou Laosi, and others. When they saw Zhou Laoer's family return, they all looked as if they had seen a ghost.
They had given Zhou Lao Er fifty taels of silver before, and they all felt that he had nothing to do with the Zhou family anymore. He should be like Zhou Lao Da, finding his own way to build a house, clear land and farm to make a living. Why should he come back?
"Second brother, we've already separated from the family, why are you coming back?"
When Zhou Laosan was at home, he didn't cover his face with a cloth. Without a nose, his face was flat. He glared at Zhou Laoer's family with disgust, especially when he saw Zhou Dafa, who still couldn't walk. His disgust was almost overflowing.
“That’s right, we gave you fifty taels of silver back then, what more do you want?” Old Zhou chimed in.
Zhou Lao Er ignored his two twin brothers and instead looked at Zhou Lao Tou, asking in a low voice, "Dad, is that what you think too?"
“The third and fourth brothers are not wrong either. One should not be too greedy. You have already received fifty taels of silver. You should be content. Don’t even think about the house and land.” Old Zhou turned his face away and said in a gruff voice.
"Bang bang bang." No one noticed where Zhou Lao Er's axe came from. This guy went crazy and suddenly started hacking at the courtyard gate. In just a few strokes, he chopped the gate into several broken pieces.
"Don't come any closer, or I'll chop anyone who does," Zhou Lao Er said, pointing his axe at Zhou Lao Tou and the others with a ferocious sneer. "You really think I'm made of clay, that I can be manipulated at will?"
"I'm making this clear today: I'm going to divide this house into two rooms, and the land will be split equally with the third and fourth sons. The fifty taels I gave him were for Dafa's medical treatment and had nothing to do with dividing the family property. He can't even get up and walk yet, and you've already forgotten about the things that harmed him, right?"
"You can forget, but we'll remember for the rest of our lives. You'd better treat the second wife well. If you push her too far, we'll kill you first, then commit suicide. No one in the family will survive."
Seeing that Zhou Lao Er's eyes were bloodshot and he was full of murderous aura, none of the Zhou Lao Tou and the others dared to provoke him, for fear that he would suddenly erupt and kill someone.
Chen Caocao, who had been silent until now, spoke up like a ghost, "We came back this time to divide the family property. If you refuse to divide it, then we'll all die together."
"You've been talking about death the moment you walked in. Who are you trying to scare? I think you're the one most afraid of death. Of all my daughters-in-law, you're the most useless, brainless piece of trash. And you dare to threaten me? We'll kill you right now. You go ahead and die for me!" After finally calming down for a while, Old Mrs. Zhou suddenly started jumping up and down again.
Xu Kong pointed at Chen Caocao and cursed, not believing that this cowardly daughter-in-law would dare to do anything to her. She was certain that Chen Caocao was weak and incompetent.
"Ah..." Chen Caocao didn't know when she had handed her son over to Zhou Lao Er. She rushed forward, hugged Zhou Lao Tai, and ran to the well in the yard.
"Mother, do you think your daughter-in-law wouldn't dare to die? Today I'm not only going to die for you, but I'm going to drag you down with me. It's no fun if I die by myself. You have to come with us, otherwise we won't be at peace. Let's die together, and it'll all be over." Chen Caocao laughed almost maniacally, her laughter shrill and chilling.
"Let me go, you wretched thing, let me go! Who wants to die with you? If you want to die, die somewhere else, don't drag me down with you, and definitely don't die at home!" Old Mrs. Zhou was terrified; her face, covered in wrinkles, was deathly pale, and her voice trembled.
"I'm going to die at home. When I die, I'll become a ghost and come back to haunt you, to avenge my poor Dafa, and to make sure you can't sleep at night." Chen Caocao hugged Old Lady Zhou tightly, looking like she really intended to jump in with Old Lady Zhou in her arms.
