The stars were picked up, and the five-and-a-half-year-old baby girl was beautiful, with soft, tender flesh.
The emaciated villagers in the starving year: ...
What did this child eat to...
Song Jiao frowned and said to Tie Qingfeng, "Brother Qingfeng, I always feel like that Stephen Chow is talking badly about me behind my back."
"Don't think too much, let's eat." Tie Qingfeng didn't look at Zhu Lin and the others. The people from Xianwu Island had just saved them, and he was grateful. How could he talk about his saviors behind their backs?
Song Jiao pursed her lips and said nothing more. She had her two personal maids serve her food. After traveling for so many days, she often ate dry rations at noon. Although she ate delicate pastries, she didn't have a good appetite and only ate a little to fill her stomach.
Having hot food to warm her stomach made her feel much better, but unfortunately there was no bed to sleep on after the meal. She didn't want to sleep on the floor in the lobby; she'd rather go back to the carriage, where there were several quilts and charcoal for warmth.
"I think I've been to this inn before, and it's run by the same people. When I was in the room, the man in black poisoned my food and tried to give it to me, but he accidentally knocked over the plate himself." Xingxing had some impression of every place she had been before, and the things she remembered kept coming back to her.
After nightfall, Song Jiao was unable to return to the carriage because the horses had been taken to the stables, and the animals would not be able to withstand the heavy snowfall outside.
The brothers laid straw mats at the bottom, then put a cotton quilt on top, and then covered themselves with another quilt. They could lie down and sleep without taking off their clothes, which was quite warm. However, the others did not want to sleep on the floor and sat there steadily without moving.
“Xingxing, come lie down with us. Sitting all night, no, for two days and two nights is too tiring. Come and lie down for a while.” Zhou Erfu kindly encouraged, no, coaxed her to come over.
"No, there are so many people walking around and watching, I'd rather not lie down." Xingxing was quite concerned about her image; she was a girl and couldn't be as reckless as Fu Ge.
Zhou Erfu wanted to persuade him again, but Zhou Sanfu couldn't stand it anymore and called him over, saying, "Second Brother, if you keep dawdling, there won't be a place for you here."
No way, Zhou Erfu didn't care about his sister anymore and went to reserve a spot for himself. Actually, he just reserved a middle spot, otherwise he would have to sleep on the outermost side. The five of them had two mats and two quilts. The people sleeping on the sides would be exposed to drafts, and it was only warm to sleep in the middle.
“Let’s take turns sleeping on the outermost side, changing every hour, otherwise the person sleeping on the outside will freeze,” Zhou Sanfu suggested.
“I think this arrangement is quite good,” Chow Tai Fook seconded.
The others agreed. Erfu scratched his head. Fine, he could only obey the majority. Even if he was the tallest, he couldn't be unreasonable, could he?
At 3:45 AM, Xingxing was half asleep in the boy's arms. The boy sat upright, protecting Xingxing as she closed her eyes for a nap, when suddenly a shrill scream came from the guest room on the second floor.
Downstairs, a group of people who knew kung fu opened their eyes, but did not make any move, only glancing calmly upstairs.
"What happened?" Song Jiao hadn't been sleeping well, and she was just starting to feel sleepy while leaning against her maid when she was startled awake.
The guards of the Tie family all looked at Tie Qingfeng, who whispered, "Zhao Niu, go up and take a look."
The guard named Zhao Niu quickly rushed up to the second floor with his knife, and came down from upstairs a short while later, without deliberately lowering his voice as he spoke.
"Young master, someone has died upstairs. The room was occupied by a scholar who was on his way to the capital for the imperial examinations and his wife. The scholar suddenly died in the middle of the night, and his wife is currently holding his body and weeping bitterly."
"The government will handle this matter; there's no need to worry about it," Tie Qingfeng said.
The guards nodded and ignored the commotion upstairs.
The young men in white also closed their eyes to rest again, automatically blocking out the wailing coming from upstairs.
The men, still lying on the ground, didn't sit up. After hearing what the guard said, they simply closed their eyes and continued sleeping. They shouldn't meddle in other people's business; they were neither officials nor powerful figures, so they had nothing to do with such things. They just wanted to sleep.
The boy covered Xingxing's ears, but she was still alert and woke up. She opened her big, watery eyes and glanced upstairs, and a picture suddenly appeared in her mind.
The little girl, who had been half-asleep, suddenly woke up. She paused to process the images that were flashing in her mind, and then sighed softly.
The boy noticed the sigh of the little girl in his arms, gently patted her back and whispered, "Close your eyes and don't think about it. The world is so big, people are born or die in every corner. There is always joy and sorrow, justice and injustice in the world. So many things happen, who can control everything in the world?"
"You're so long-winded. I saw it all, but I wasn't planning on getting involved. I'm not going to worry about it." Xingxing pouted and muttered under her breath, tilting her chin up.
His worries were unnecessary.
For the next two days, everyone in the inn heard the scholar's wife wailing, which gave everyone a headache. They wanted to leave but couldn't, and were forced to endure the woman's cries.
This woman is amazing. She's been howling for two days and her voice hasn't gone hoarse. She has so much energy. She can only stop for a quarter of an hour at most each day, and then she starts howling again in a regular pattern.
“I suspect that during those two quarters of an hour of pause, the woman was eating and drinking. After she was full, she continued to wail and howl. Although we shouldn’t talk about her behind her back since her husband has passed away, she’s crying way too much. Doesn’t she ever need to sleep?” Zhou Erfu muttered, shaking his head.
The others nodded in agreement, deeply agreeing. Everyone was terrified by the woman's crying and just hoped the heavy snow would stop soon so they could leave the inn as quickly as possible the next day.
The two days passed amidst the woman's weeping and singing. The heavy snow stopped in the middle of the night on the second day, and after everyone had breakfast in the morning, they left without hesitation.
"I heard that the scholar was on his way to the capital to participate in next year's imperial examination, but he died suddenly on the way. The innkeeper was really unlucky. I think there must be something fishy going on," Zhou Erfu said with a mysterious look.
