The stars were picked up, and the five-and-a-half-year-old baby girl was beautiful, with soft, tender flesh.
The emaciated villagers in the starving year: ...
What did this child eat to...
Because it takes half an hour to walk from the barren slope to the village, the villagers could usually return to the village immediately. However, after being imprisoned for two days and tortured so badly, they were paralyzed on the ground and couldn't recover for a long time.
Zhu Chumo took their pulses and prescribed medicine, but the village was far from the town, and it would take a whole day to get there, so the medicine couldn't be bought back in a short time.
The villagers had no horse-drawn carriages, not even oxcarts, so in the end they had to trouble Zhu Xichen to drive the carriage to town to get the medicine. Zhu Chumo had some prepared pills on him, and if each person took one, dozens of pills would be used up. He wasn't so generous as to give away so many pills.
So unless someone is truly unable to hold on and will die immediately without medicine, Zhu Chumo will feed them a pill; those who can hold on will be allowed to continue.
It got dark quickly. The village chief's wife took her two daughters-in-law back to the village to take care of the dozen or so babies at home, while the village chief and his two sons stayed on the barren slope to take care of the villagers.
The villagers were too weak to go back home until they could rest on the barren slope for the night. Before dark, the village chief sent his two sons back to the village to bring back pots and food, and they cooked for the villagers on the mountain.
There wasn't much grain, just a mix of various coarse grains. We boiled a pot of water to make porridge. When spring came, some wild vegetables sprouted on the mountain, so we picked them and cooked them with the porridge.
Zhu Qiuyu, Zhu Chumo, and Zhu Yueran were assigned to protect the villagers on the barren slope. The villagers had already been rescued, so they naturally had to see the good deeds through to the end. If they were left on the mountain and something else happened, wouldn't all their efforts be in vain?
As dusk fell, Zhu Lin took Xingxing back to the village. Zhu Changge and Zhu Qingruo also returned together. They went to the kitchen to cook dinner. After dinner, with nothing to do in the dark, Xingxing placed two luminous pearls on the table for lighting, and the four of them sat at the octagonal table chatting.
Around midnight, Zhu Xichen returned from the town. He first went back to the village, bought three hundred catties of coarse grain in the town, unloaded the grain, and then drove the horse-drawn carriage to the barren slope.
Upon receiving the medicine, Zhu Chumo instructed the village chief and his two sons to immediately decoct it. Since the villagers were all in similar condition and were drinking the same medicine, he boiled a large pot and then divided it into bowls for each person.
"Will it rain tonight?" Zhu Qiuyu asked Zhu Chumo, looking up at the sky.
"No, otherwise I wouldn't be staying here; I would have gone back to the village long ago," Zhu Chumo replied nonchalantly.
It was still very cold. The villagers huddled together, covered with thin quilts, and fell into a deep sleep. They were exhausted, fearful, and tormented both physically and mentally. After two days and one night of nightmares, they were finally relieved and their nerves relaxed before they dared to close their eyes and rest.
But many people were sleeping when they suddenly screamed, "Help! Don't push! I can't breathe! Let us out!"
Some people suddenly opened their eyes and sat up, staring wide-eyed ahead in a daze for a long time before they could recover. Zhu Chumo saw that some people were having such severe nightmares that they seemed like they couldn't wake up, so he went over and gave them a few acupuncture needles.
Those who have been given acupuncture will calm down and fall asleep without being startled.
The chaotic night finally passed. Perhaps because they had eaten their fill, taken their medicine, and rested for a night, everyone regained about half of their energy and spirit when they woke up the next day.
Those with strong resilience and willpower were able to get up and walk around, and even helped gather firewood to cook porridge. After the porridge was finished, the village chief's two sons cooked another pot of medicine and distributed it to everyone.
"Now that you've recovered, let's go back to the village. It's not safe to be out in the wilderness." Zhu Qiuyu gestured to the village chief that it was time to leave and told the villagers to get up and stop sitting there like idiots.
The villagers were weak and walked very slowly. What should have been a half-hour journey took them more than an hour to get back to the village. The village chief's wife and two daughters-in-law cooked two large pots of coarse grain porridge and also made some flatbreads, so the villagers would have something to eat when they returned.
Seeing everyone wolfing down their food, the village chief secretly called his wife into the house to talk, "Honey, you've made so much food. We don't have much food left. How are we going to survive the next few months if we keep eating like this?"
"Shh, keep your voice down," the village chief's wife rolled her eyes at him, then cautiously peeked outside the door. Seeing no one was paying attention, she whispered, "What are you so worried about? The food everyone's eating now isn't from our family; it was given to me by those two girls in white. It's a whole three hundred pounds. They said they bought it especially for the villagers."
Our village suffered a terrible disaster. These kind people took pity on us and gave us this food so we could survive until we recovered. Thank goodness for these kind people, otherwise our village would have been finished.
"So that's how it is. We've really met some good people," the village chief said gratefully, then paused, remembering something else, "What about the corpses of those female demons?"
The day before yesterday and yesterday, they were busy looking for the villagers, so they didn't have time to deal with the bodies of those female demons. When they came back just now, the village chief didn't see those people in the yard, and even the bloodstains in the yard had been washed away, so he was in a hurry to ask.
“My two daughters-in-law and I were terrified when we saw those dead bodies. Even though they were dead, we were still scared. This morning, we carried them to the end of the village and threw them away,” said the village chief’s wife.
Village chief: "Didn't you dig a pit to bury him?"
"Why bury them? We don't serve those female demons. We don't want to collect their corpses."
The village chief glared at his wife. "What are you thinking? If the dead aren't buried, they'll rot quickly. That place is dirty and has a corpse smell, which can easily lead to a plague. It must be cleaned up."
The village chief had received some education in his youth and knew some common sense. Although he didn't know anything about germs or infections, he knew that if many people died during a natural disaster and the bodies weren't properly disposed of, people would get plagues.
The saying that a major disaster is followed by a major epidemic is actually caused by too many deaths.
"It's that serious? Then let's dig a hole and bury him right now. We also need to bury all the dead people in the village. But with just a few of us, burying everyone would be exhausting, wouldn't it?" The village chief's wife said with a worried expression.
