In their previous lives, Su Yin, her mother, and her sister-in-law were brutally mu*dered by a mob. In a twist of fate, all three were reborn together.
Before the mob could reach their villag...
It was hot at noon.
They had been walking all morning without resting.
Su Yin glanced at the scorching sun. There was a nice tree on the official road ahead that provided just the right shade.
"Go ahead and take a break."
Zhou Youcai said, "No, we are not tired yet."
"Yeah! Let's keep going."
Because of the reasonable arrangement, whenever people feel tired, they can just rest for a while in the carriage and then take over.
This cycle made them feel not too tired.
"People don't get tired, but cows and mules need to rest."
"I almost forgot."
When they reached the front, they drove the ox carts and mule carts directly under the tree, and the adults and children rested underneath.
As soon as they sat down to rest, a family pulling a cart and an ox cart also came to rest not far from them.
There were about twenty people in that family, big and small.
The two sides nodded and greeted each other from a distance.
"Uncle, put the knife in front of you." Su Yin ordered.
No one asked any questions, but they knew the reason after looking at the refugees around them.
Su's mother took out a biscuit and a piece of dried meat from the package and stuffed them into Su Yin's hand.
"Mom, you eat the dried meat, and a piece of bread is enough for me."
On one side, the Xu family, a family of three, ate one pancake, tore it in half, stuffed one half into the hands of the mother-in-law, and shared the other half between themselves and the child.
Each family also took out some dry food to chew.
The children from the family next door saw them eating and started clamoring for food.
Farmers usually eat two meals a day, and there is no lunch. When they are hungry, they usually rely on cooking or drinking water to fill their stomachs.
But Su Yin can't.
Traveling is very physically demanding, and the stomach has little oil and water, so it is easier to get hungry.
Every time she walked for an hour, her stomach would growl, and by noon, that was already her limit.
So she usually eats a little, to keep something in her stomach so she doesn't feel too hungry.
Of course, the prerequisite for doing all this is to have resources. If there is not so much food, she can still survive.
When she ate, other people would see her and eat a little too. After all, water is precious now and should not be wasted.
When the scattered refugees saw them eating, many of them rushed over to ask for food.
When these people saw Su Yin and his friends holding knives, they knew they were not easy to deal with and did not dare to come forward to ask for their money. However, the family next door was not so lucky and rushed towards them.
Even if they tried to drive them away, they couldn't.
Until someone came to snatch the bread from the child's hand, the man of that family immediately raised his hatchet and hoe and hit the crowd, and only then drove away the beggars.
After a short rest, the group set off again.
When the family saw Su Yin and his group set off, they immediately followed.
Su Baozhu noticed it and said, "Yinyin, they are following us."
Now everyone is extremely vigilant, fearing that something unexpected might happen.
Su Yin glanced at the people behind him and said, "As long as they don't get too close to us, don't worry about them."
"Um."
An hour later, the family following behind was obviously exhausted.
"Dad, can you slow down? I can't walk anymore." A girl about thirteen or fourteen years old in the team spoke up.
The man driving the cart didn't stop. "No, slow down. We are getting further and further away from the group ahead."
"But they were walking so fast, I couldn't keep up."
It wasn't just them who couldn't keep up. The other younger and older ones also had a hard time and they all had to grit their teeth and keep following.
"What do you think is going on? Why can they walk so fast?"
"Of course. There are old people and children in their team as well."
The head of the family looked at his family members who were slowing down, and then looked at Su Yin and his group who were getting farther and farther away from them.
"Just bear with it for a while."
"Dad, why do we have to follow them?" asked the man's eldest son.
The man driving the cart said, "You didn't see it just now. When they were eating, they just put the knife there and no one dared to approach. This shows that these people are powerful and know more about some things than us. They must know how to survive along the way better than us."
"Follow them, we can also learn from them."
"So we can't lose them."
"Just bear with it, I think they will rest soon, then we can take a break."
After hearing what Dad said, the others could only grit their teeth and persevere.
But they endured it until sunset, but they still hadn't rested.
"Dad, why don't they rest yet?"
The coachman was also confused.
He didn't know why they didn't rest yet!
But soon they thought they had found the reason.
"Look, the front is Hui'an Prefecture."
"So we have arrived at Hui'an Prefecture."
"They are trying to get to Hui'an Prefecture before dark."
"Dad, can we take a break now?" asked the little daughter in a childish voice.
"Well, you can take a break now."
The whole family breathed a sigh of relief.
Su Yin and his group, who were walking in front, also saw the towering city walls, but the tall city gates were tightly closed.
Su Yin's eyes fell on the skinny refugees outside the city gate. These people were all naked, without any belongings. Everyone was either lying or sitting, motionless.
Even if someone came, he would just raise his eyelids and take a look, then ignore them.
