Her father and brother were framed for colluding with the enemy and treason, and the Shen family's fortunes plummeted, leaving them in a precarious position that everyone avoided.
Even th...
After a short rest, the group set off again.
To prevent the Tibetans from noticing and pursuing them, Xue Shen did not stop to rest even during the night, but instead traveled through the night.
Because of the bumpy ride, Xue Shen specially asked Fu Cui to lay thick soft cushions on the carriage to prevent Shen Youying from being unable to bear the bumpy journey.
Shen Xiuyi and Xue Shen rode their horses to protect the carriage on either side. Through the raised carriage curtain, they could see that Shen Youying had fallen asleep, exhausted. Because the cushions on the carriage were thick enough, half of her body was sunk into them. Although her face was somewhat pale, she was sleeping soundly.
He looked at Xue Shen and said, "We've already passed the Azha tribe, so we can slow down our journey a bit. I'm worried that Zhao Zhao's body won't be able to handle the long journey."
Xue Shen shared this concern, saying, "We'll set up camp and rest tonight. I've already sent someone to inform my father-in-law, and he should be arriving soon with reinforcements."
Shen Xiuyi was finally relieved.
The group traveled until nightfall, and Xue Shen indeed found an open area to set up camp.
Shen Youying slept fitfully in the carriage all day, but it wasn't a deep sleep, and she was still a little listless when she was helped off the carriage.
Xue Shen had the Fire Cave Immortal take her pulse and confirmed that she wasn't in any danger of miscarriage; she was just tired from traveling and not getting enough rest. He was slightly relieved. He asked Shen Xiuyi to look after him and went into the mountains to hunt for prey himself.
Shen Youying sat sideways on the cushion, with Shen Xiuyi beside her. She said, "When I first met Yuan Jin, I inexplicably didn't like him."
Upon hearing this, Shen Youying couldn't help but laugh: "If brother regains his memories, he will dislike him even more."
Given Xue Shen's past reputation, if her brother were still alive, he would never have allowed her to marry into the Prince of Qin's household.
Shen Xiuyi sensed something and asked, "Do I have a grudge against him? Or is his reputation not so good?"
Shen Youying smiled without saying a word: "You'll know when brother regains his memory."
Seeing that she wouldn't say, Shen Xiuyi guessed that there must be one of the two reasons. He chuckled and said, "Let bygones be bygones. But after spending time with you all these days, I've changed my opinion of him. He treats you very well."
"He's someone you can trust."
When he spoke of these things, his expression became very serious: "Although I have lost my memory, I always think that if I had a younger sister, I would never easily entrust her to others. I would take care of her myself to feel at ease."
At this point, he looked at Shen Youying and said with a hint of regret, "It's a pity that something happened to me, I don't remember anything from before, and I couldn't protect you myself."
Shen Youying's eyes reddened slightly as she shook her head repeatedly, saying, "Brother has been very good to me. I have never blamed you, so please don't blame yourself."
Shen Xiuyi said, "I'm just worried that my memory will never be restored, and that I'll disappoint you."
He had begun receiving treatment from Master Huodong, but so far it hadn't been effective. So although he occasionally felt unhappy about Xue Shen's existence, most of the time he was grateful that Xue Shen was a decent person who could comfort and accompany his sister when she was sad.
He knew that with Shen Youying's personality, even if she was sad, she would never show it to her brother who remembered nothing.
Shen Youying shook her head and said, "Even if you don't remember anything, you are still my brother. As long as the family is together, that is the greatest fortune."
After she finished speaking, she smiled brightly at Shen Xiuyi with her eyes crinkled.
Just then, Xue Shen returned from hunting and saw her smiling broadly. He asked, "What are you talking about that makes you so happy?"
Shen Youying turned to look at him, tilted her head playfully, and said, "Let's talk about what you'll hunt."
Xue Shen waved the rabbit in his hand: "I found a litter of rabbits. I'll roast some for you later."
Seeing Shen Youying looking over curiously, he handed the rabbit to Liuyun to cook, and then, as if by magic, pulled a lively little rabbit out of his collar.
The rabbit was only the size of his fist, with grayish-white fur, curled up in a ball and trembling in his palm.
“There’s a baby in the litter, and it wouldn’t survive if we kept it, so we brought it back to keep you company.”
Shen Youying looked at the little rabbit curled up in a ball, carefully took it from his palm, stroked its soft fur, and said, "It's still so small, keep it."
She placed the rabbit on her lap and asked Fu Cui to find some tender grass to feed it.
Even the youngest rabbit can sense danger. He trembled when he was in Xue Shen's palm, but after being held by Shen Youying for a while, he became lively and tried to jump down, stumbling along. He also started eating some grass.
Shen Youying was invigorated when she had to take care of the baby rabbits.
Xue Shen watched this unfold, a smile curving his lips, before turning to Liu Yun to prepare the rabbit.
Cooking in the wild is inconvenient, but fortunately Xue Shen brought enough spices. After Liu Yun cleaned the rabbit, he would skewer it with clean branches, coat it with seasonings and spices, and then sit by the campfire to roast it slowly.
Shen Xiuyi followed his example and took a rabbit to roast.
His memory was gone, but his instincts remained. Without Xue Shen's prompting, he coated the rabbit with spices and sat opposite Xue Shen to roast it.
After playing with the little rabbit for a while, Shen Youying smelled a familiar fragrance. She handed the rabbit to Fu Cui to take care of, lifted her skirt, and slowly walked to the campfire. She twitched her nose and said, "It smells so good."
Xue Shen used his dagger to cut a piece of the tenderest meat and fed it to her: "Be careful not to burn yourself."
Shen Youying opened her mouth and ate it, then smiled at him: "It tastes good."
Seeing this, Shen Xiuyi cut off a piece and handed it to her: "Want to try some?"
Shen Youying looked at Xue Shen and then at her brother, and took the food without discrimination. However, as soon as she tasted it, she showed a look of surprise: "Brother, did you remember something? It tastes exactly the same as the ones you used to bake for me."
