"Can you do it?" the man asked, knitting his brows.
"How would I know if I don't try?" the woman replied sincerely.
"What do you want?" the man asked playful...
"Second sister, shall we take a walk?" Meng Qi said softly as she looked at the sedan chair carried by the maid not far away.
"Great, the weather has warmed up so quickly these past few days. Look, the trees are all turning green." Meng Wan nodded, and the two sisters slowly walked out of Shanzhi Hall and turned to the alley leading to Songhe Garden.
Meng Qi took Meng Wan's arm and whispered, "Zhou Yu did it, right?"
Meng Wan was stunned at first, then turned to look at her. Seeing that Meng Qi's eyes were filled with excitement, sparkling like broken gems, he realized what she was saying.
"Why did you think it was me?" Meng Wan smiled.
"I knew it was you. No one else would be so thoughtful."
Meng Wan burst out laughing. "What would I do if others knew that I teased Meng Juan like this and you called me considerate?"
"Who cares? As long as it's what I want, it's fine. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or energy to do this. If I had the chance, I would be even more ruthless."
"Zhou Yu said the same thing, but I think this is just the beginning. If we make it too big, people will suspect us, which is not worth it. It's better to disgust the third room and make Meng Juan's life miserable. How about it? Are you happy?"
Meng Qi nodded. "I'm happy, very happy. I was thinking about Hong Zhe and Meng Juan, that couple, and I was going to find an opportunity, but I didn't expect you to help me think of it. But this is nothing, these two's 'good days' are still to come. So there's something about Tuesday's incident here. I was afraid you couldn't do so much alone."
"Well, the idea was mine, but Zhou Yu had to do the work. The guy next to him, Liu Zi, was incredibly clever. He actually managed to sneak into the craftsmen making Meng Juan's sedan chair, and that's how he did it."
Meng Qi leaned her head against Meng Wan and said, "Thank you, Second Sister. It feels really good to have someone do what I want for me without any words."
Meng Wan sensed Meng Qi's emotions and patted her hands, saying, "It's not entirely for you. After all, what Hong Zhe did back then really made Zhou Er lose face in the capital. Even if I didn't mention it, Zhou Yu would still not be able to swallow this."
Meng Qi nodded, stood up straight, and continued, "I just arrived at the palace, and many things are still unfinished. It always takes time. You don't have to worry about me. I just hope that before you get married, you can spend time with mother. If you hear about any 'accidents' of mine, such as the incident of being confined to Hanyuan a while ago, just comfort mother. Don't worry, everything will develop as I planned."
Meng Qi stopped talking, looking at the approaching main gate of Songhe Garden. She looked at Meng Wan and said, "As I said before, until I'm sure of what's going on, my chances of returning are still slim. So, I'll have to ask you to take care of Mother. I think Mr. Zhou Er is willing to cooperate with you in punishing Meng Juan. While he certainly wants to deal with Hong Zhe, he also values you. It seems you're indeed a better match for him."
Just as Meng Wan was about to speak, Meng Qi stopped her. "Second sister, I never thought you'd be my second sister. I always knew I was born to carry my memory and grief for you. So, when you appeared, I may have done something extreme or said something unkind to you. I've never truly apologized to you, nor have I sincerely said thank you."
After saying this, Meng Qi took a step back and bowed to Meng Wan in a proper manner.
Meng Wan suddenly felt sorry for this little girl. It had only been over three months, and life in the palace had already turned an innocent little girl into a lady in the inner chamber. Was this a happy or sad thing?
"What are you doing? We are sisters, we should help each other."
Meng Qi grinned, "Indeed, we are sisters. We have a long time to live, and everything will be different. You don't have to be afraid when you arrive at the Prince Shen's Mansion. Although the Hu family has been in the mansion for many years and is not easy to deal with, with your intelligence and Zhou Yu's support, I believe you will be able to handle it. I will also establish myself in the mansion as soon as possible. When the time comes, we sisters will be united, not to mention the position of the Crown Prince, perhaps we will have greater fortunes in the future."
Meng Qi thought for a moment and continued, "Also, I have two more things to trouble you with, Second Sister."
Meng Qi saw the housekeeper of Songhe Garden coming towards them with a smile on her face, and she leaned over to whisper a few words into Meng Wan's ear.
――――――
The two entered Songhe Garden hand in hand. Second Madam Liu, beaming with joy, stepped forward and took Meng Qi's hand. Turning back to Huainan Marquis' wife, Song, she smiled and said, "Look at our princess. Her whole demeanor is so impressive. How can any mansion of a marquis, earl, or duke compare to hers?"
But he glanced at Liu, with a smug look on his face, and kept talking, "We don't know if our eldest aunt can come back. It's been a while since the four sisters have seen each other."
Meng Qi looked at Liu's flushed face and for the first time felt that what Liu said was very pleasant to the ear.
The two sisters bowed and greeted Mrs. Song. Mrs. Song looked at her polite little granddaughter and reached out to pull her, but Meng Qi seemed not to see her. She sat in the chair next to them, picked up the tea, and then nodded symbolically to Mrs. Liu and Mrs. Liu.
Song's outstretched hand froze there. Although Meng Wan didn't know why Meng Qi did this, she couldn't let Song lose face in front of so many people. She quickly handed the tea on the table to her and said with a smile, "Mother needs to change her clothes. Come back later."
Song put away the awkward expression on her face, took the tea and said nothing.
Jiang looked at Meng Qi with a haughty look on her face, thinking about the rumors she had heard, and thought to herself, she is said to be like that outside, but when she comes home she acts like a princess.
Smiling, he poured tea for Liu and sat down, saying, "Second Aunt is right. Our Meng family marries off four daughters a year, and people outside praise us as amazing. Especially my fourth sister, now that she's a princess, you have no idea how glorious it is for me to return to my parents' home."
