Note that this book is a slow-burn novel, and it will become increasingly exciting as the story progresses.
It starts from 2002, beginning at the Beijing Film Academy, and starting with the H...
The next morning, Huang Bo woke up needing to urinate. Looking at the unfamiliar surroundings, his head still ached a little. After searching for a while, he finally found the toilet. After relieving himself, he looked at the huge villa and recalled how he had drunk too much the night before, and then been sedated and put into the car.
Huang Bo opened each door one by one, and finally saw Shen Fang lying on the bed in the seventh room. He walked over and patted Shen Fang on the shoulder.
"Hey, Chen Fang, wake up, hey, wake up."
Shen Fang slowly opened his eyes and looked at Huang Bo: "Oh, Brother Bo is awake?"
Huang Bo nodded: "Goodness, we were drinking and watching videos last night. Where are my things? I haven't been home all night, my wife must be worried sick. My phone is dead too, do you have a universal charger I can borrow?"
That's right. Modern phones still have a completely separate battery; the battery can be removed and charged with a universal charger, not necessarily a data cable. It can still be charged.
Shen Fang got up and found an oval-shaped universal charger. He tossed it to Huang Bo, who took it and pulled out his Nokia 8301. He removed the battery, aligned it with the universal charger's pins, plugged it in, and it began flashing its colorful lights.
At this moment, Chen Fang also came out of the bathroom after a quick wash.
Shen Fang looked at Huang Bo and said, "Let's go, Brother Bo. Have some breakfast first, and I'll take you home in a bit."
Huang Bo nodded: "Okay, that'll give us something to talk about when we get back, so Xiao Ou won't think I'm messing around outside."
Shen Fang looked at Huang Bo teasingly: "What's wrong, Brother Bo? Are you afraid of your wife?"
Huang Bo nodded: "That's right. So what if I'm afraid of my wife? It was my wife who supported me in taking the entrance exam for the Beijing Film Academy. I'm about to start school, and I still need Xiao Ou to support me."
Shen Fang patted Huang Bo on the shoulder: "Brother Bo, you can still live off a woman, that's awesome."
Huang Bo said proudly, "I'm quite the handsome guy, so I'll definitely be an idol in movies from now on."
After saying that, he flicked his bangs, but Huang Bo didn't feel that usual dashing air about him. Only then did he remember that he had shaved his head yesterday.
He sighed, "Oh dear, my long hair, which has been with me for so long, is gone just like that. My handsomeness is gone."
Shen Fang rolled his eyes at Huang Bo: "You're much more handsome now than before, OK? What kind of taste do you have? I'm really impressed. Are you channeling some kind of non-mainstream style?"
Huang Bo retorted, "You don't know anything. Everyone does it this way now, okay? Look at the young people on the street, which one doesn't have flowing bangs? I was even planning to dye my hair long blonde, but alas, that's it."
Shen Fang imagined the cringe-worthy scene. Speechless, he looked at Huang Bo. What kind of aesthetic is this?! My style is what's considered handsome; yours is just non-mainstream. But it's not Huang Bo's fault; the "emo" and "non-mainstream" styles are really popular now. This trend originated in South Korea, specifically from a group that swept across Asia called "Hot." This group can be considered the originator of the Korean Wave.
This group isn't most famous for their music, but rather for their bizarre appearance. Various shades of red, blue, and green hair, along with bangs that could cover their faces, and some trendy music, created a sensation. How they became famous isn't entirely clear, but they were famous—famous throughout Asia.
A large portion of young people in China are eager to imitate all sorts of strange bangs, hairstyles, and messy, eye-catching colors, especially migrant workers in Guangdong. If you dye your hair and style it, you are the most handsome guy in Guangdong; if you don't, you are out of touch with the trend.
As someone from Guangdong, I have to say I've been bombarded with these blindingly bright hairstyles a lot these past two years. Barbershops in Guangdong are making money off this now. All sorts of colors—red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, purple—and all sorts of bizarre hairstyles—brooms, slippers, fans—it's truly an eyesore!
Shen Fang stared at Huang Bo: "Brother Bo, do you think you're more handsome, or am I?"
Huang Bo said speechlessly, "Isn't that obvious? I'm definitely not as handsome as you."
Shen Fang patted Huang Bo on the shoulder: "Then listen to the handsome guy, okay? Your current look is definitely 100 times more handsome than before. Don't believe me? Go home and ask your sister-in-law."
Huang Bo looked incredulous: "Your sister-in-law's favorite thing about me is my long hair."
Sinking Fang...I'm tired. Let it perish.
Without saying another word, he pulled Huang Bo to a small stall and ordered a donkey meat sandwich, two eggs, and a bowl of soy milk.
Huang Bo ordered an egg pancake with two eggs and a bowl of soy milk.
"Fang'er, why don't you drink douzhi (fermented mung bean juice) when you come to Beijing? It's a Beijing specialty, why would you drink soy milk?"
He told Huang Bo to slurp up a mouthful of soy milk.
Looking at the green soy milk in Huang Bo's bowl, Shen Fang felt as if a black skull was floating above it. Shen Fang had ordered a bowl of this stuff out of curiosity on his first day in Beijing. After taking a sip, he felt so nauseous that he couldn't eat anything all day.
It was sour, stinky, and spicy—in short, the taste was unforgettable for Shen Fang.
Shen Fang pinched his nose and looked at Huang Bo: "Brother Bo, aren't you from Shandong? You can actually drink douzhi (fermented mung bean juice)?"
Huang Bo chuckled: "You'll naturally get used to it over time. When I first came to Beijing, I couldn't finish it either, and I thought this stuff was even more disgusting than stinky tofu. But I got used to it after drinking it for a while. Now I feel uncomfortable if I don't drink it for a day."
Shen Fang gave Huang Bo a thumbs up, indicating that Huang Bo was a real man. After the two finished breakfast and returned to their place, Huang Bo installed the batteries. He then discovered that there were many missed calls from Xiao Ou. He quickly pulled Shen Fang back to their rented courtyard house.
As Huang Bo opened the gate, he saw an ordinary-looking young woman washing clothes in the yard. He called out, carrying a Liangpin Shop bag, "Xiao Ou, I'm back! Hehe, look what delicious treats I brought you. I also brought a friend with me."
