Chapter 38 Harvesting Vegetables

Unlike the chaotic scene at Granny Fang's house, the Shen family was bustling with activity as they tried on their new clothes.

Meng Zhao wore a light pink, narrow-sleeved, cross-collar dress with a slightly cinched waist, and the light red skirt swayed and shimmered as she walked.

She was tall and slender, with a pair of clear and bright eyes beneath her arched willow-leaf eyebrows. She was smiling happily, her cheeks slightly flushed, which added to her charm, leaving the two children mesmerized.

"Sister-in-law, you are so beautiful, like a fairy."

"What? My sister-in-law is even prettier than a fairy."

Meng Zhao stepped forward, pinched the two children's cheeks and shook them, "You talk like you've seen a fairy. Did you eat too much candy today? Why are you so sweet-talking?"

The two children looked at Meng Zhao with bright eyes. In their eyes, their sister-in-law was so good to them, she was like a fairy.

"They were telling the truth. Zhao Zhao is already very beautiful, but with just a little makeup, she's absolutely stunning."

Meng Zhao clung to Madam Gu's shoulder with a grin and said coquettishly, "Hehe, I still have to thank Mother for making such beautiful clothes for me."

"Zhao Zhao is beautiful, she looks good in anything."

Meng Zhao was so embarrassed by the praise that she picked up two sets of children's clothes and told Shen Qingze and Shen Qingyu to change into them as well.

When the two children came out after changing their clothes, they were a sight to behold. Their little faces were round and their eyes were dark and bright. After these days of nourishing food, not only were their faces fuller, but their hair was also no longer as dry as before. Wearing their newly made clothes, they looked very cute with their rosy cheeks.

Meng Zhao didn't hold back and pulled the two of them into his arms, giving them a good rub. If it weren't for the fact that their faces were already red from being rubbed, Meng Zhao could have played with them for a while longer.

The next morning, several villagers who had made arrangements arrived one after another to deliver vegetables. After these days of experience, the initial chaos had subsided, and they lined up consciously and took their turn.

"Auntie, what did you bring today?"

"It's the same as yesterday, still loofah. Lan Ying said that the steamed loofah with garlic at the stall sells well, everyone loves to eat it, so she asked me to deliver loofah for the next few days."

"That's great! You have such a big patch of loofah vines in your yard, that should be enough for you to sell for several days."

"That's right. We used to eat loofah at home, but now we don't eat it anymore. We save it all to exchange for some money so we can buy some meat and oil. Hahaha, what did you bring today?"

The man lifted the cloth covering the basket, revealing a basket full of mushrooms, which startled her.

"Wow, how did you manage to gather so much?"

These mushrooms grow in the mountains for free, and everyone wants them, but there aren't enough mushrooms for everyone to eat. Some people go up the mountain before dawn, and they still might not be able to pick any.

The man replied, "Hehe, it's my bunch of naughty monkeys. They're always causing trouble. I sent them all out to search. If they found a lot, I'd reward them with a piece of candy. They were so happy, and it saved them from bothering me at home."

She was very satisfied with this. Her family had seven or eight children, who were at the age where they could eat a lot. She was in charge of managing the household and was always worried about it.

Now it's all good. They've all been sent out to look for mushrooms. If they find a lot, they'll be rewarded with a piece of candy, although the candy isn't cheap—you can only get two for one coin.

But if we sell these mushrooms to the Shen family, we can earn thirty or forty coins.

She exchanged the money for grain, and the rice in her bowl became thicker. Her parents-in-law only said that she was good at managing the household, and her sisters-in-law didn't dare to make her suffer.

In the past, even if you picked mushrooms and took them to the county to sell, it would be a hassle to go back and forth, not to mention you would have to set up a stall to attract customers and sell them little by little.

These mushrooms are best enjoyed freshly picked; once they're dried in the sun, they won't fetch a good price. It's nowhere near as good as selling them directly to Shen Jiaqiang.

The two continued chatting and laughing, each expressing their own satisfaction with Meng Zhao's harvest of the vegetables.

Granny Fang was among those people, but she was much quieter, and her usual loud voice was gone.

Li Yumei, who was in line, was a straightforward person. She couldn't stand Fang Pozi's tendency to take advantage of others and cause trouble unreasonably. If it weren't for the fact that they were from different generations and didn't spend much time together, they probably would have already started fighting.

Yesterday, she had already heard from her father-in-law about the terrible things Fang Pozi had done, and now seeing her looking so humiliated, she was truly delighted.

Granny Fang brought over a basket of white radishes today. Each one was bigger than the palm of my hand. The radish leaves were still tender and green, and the surface looked intact without any cracks or splits.

Just as Madam Gu was about to weigh the vegetables, she heard a cheerful voice.

"Auntie, you'd better look carefully, lest you be fooled by that unscrupulous person again."

Granny Fang had been feeling resentful all night. When she came today, she felt a little relieved to see that Madam Gu hadn't said anything. But when she heard this, Granny Fang became unhappy.

"It's like a dog catching a mouse, meddling in other people's business. Who gave you, a junior, the right to speak?"

“You’ve already done it, why are you afraid of what others will say? Their business is just starting to pick up, and they’re already thinking of helping the villagers. We who are benefiting from this should thank them properly. How could anyone do something like trying to fool people with wilted vegetables? If other villages knew about this, they would laugh their heads off.”

Granny Fang was thoroughly humiliated. She had already been subservient to the village head yesterday, and now she had to put up with Li Yumei's insults.

"Bullshit! What I do is none of your business."

While washing vegetables, Meng Zhao saw the commotion and stopped what she was doing. She took a basket and went to the radishes that Granny Fang had brought that day. She picked them up one by one and checked them before putting them in another basket.

"Mom, these vegetables are quite fresh, we can harvest them."
