The night was as dark as ink, and the Xu family mansion was completely silent, except for a dim yellow light still shining in Xu's mother's room.

She sat at her desk, her fingers hovering over the telephone, her eyes filled with anxiety and unease.

The phone rang, but no one answered. Once, twice, three times... until the third ring stopped abruptly, and a cold look flashed across Xu's mother's face.

"Hmph, Lin Yuan and Xu Lan actually dared to use me as a pawn!"

She slammed her hand on the table, making the teacups on it shake a few times.

She muttered to herself and walked heavily toward the bedroom.

Xu Lan accepted the breakfast with both hands, her eyes filled with a complex and unreadable mix of emotions.

She pursed her lips slightly, her voice barely audible: "Brother Lin Yuan, you have treated us so kindly, we really don't know how to repay you."

Upon hearing this, Lin Yuan gently patted her shoulder, his eyes filled with undisguised doting affection: "Sister Xu Lan, your presence by my side is the greatest reward you can give me."
