Chapter Twelve: Gaining Faith

Every student is never satisfied with a short holiday. They always return to school with regrets, catching up on their homework in the classroom while thinking about the TV series they didn't finish watching last night and the snacks in the refrigerator. As a result, they all share the same hated day—Monday.

After a short weekend, they were greeted with the news that their exam results had been released.

The third period in the morning was math class. Before class, our homeroom teacher, Ms. Liu, told the students that the academic affairs office was already compiling the scores and that the results would be available in the afternoon.

The students below began to whisper among themselves, and soon it turned into a noisy market.

"Oh my god, the results are coming out so fast? I'm not ready yet."

"Me too, I'm so nervous."

"I hope I can do well in math; I can't take Lao Liu's torture."

"What if our class doesn't do well on the test and makes Lao Liu lose face? Would he kill someone to cover it up?"

Ms. Liu has always been concerned about her reputation and believes that her class should be the best in the grade, which is why she is so strict with them.

"Stop right there. Even if we didn't do well on the exam, there are still people who can help Old Liu save face." After saying that, the man glanced in Pei Ke's direction.

They exchanged glances, and the person they were talking to immediately understood.

Pei Ke consistently scores incredibly high, nearly perfect, scores on every in-class quiz. Although there has never been a large-scale exam for the entire grade before, Pei Ke's test papers have already been circulated among all the teachers in the grade. So, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Pei Ke should be number one in the grade this time.

At this moment, Su Xun's heart was already like a drum set, beating "bang bang bang," his heart pounding with anxiety.

When she was at home, her parents asked her about the exam, and she simply replied, as usual, that she had performed only so-so, a safe answer.

It will neither disappoint them too much nor surprise them too much.

Seeing the noisy scene below, Teacher Liu tapped the blackboard, adjusted his glasses with his other hand, and shouted, "Alright, alright, the grades are posted now, you can discuss them later. Let's start class and continue from where we left off last time."

Upon hearing Teacher Liu's voice, everyone reflexively quieted down, opened their textbooks, and looked at the blackboard, as if the noise from just now had never happened.

Teacher Liu looked at the effect of her words with satisfaction. Sure enough, children just couldn't be allowed to be spoiled, especially this group of children who were about to enter their rebellious phase. If they weren't stricter, they would go wild sooner or later.

Some teachers disagreed with her "violent" teaching method, believing it was too oppressive for the students. However, she repeatedly proved the effectiveness of her method with exam scores and college entrance rates, so those teachers stopped discussing these issues with her.

Before the students rushed out of the classroom for the eighth period, Ms. Liu arrived at the classroom door a few minutes early and walked into the classroom as soon as the bell rang, startling the teachers who were teaching that day.

The students, who were about to rush to the cafeteria, groaned when they saw their homeroom teacher blocking the classroom again. They thought he was going to use their break time to yell at them again. After all, this wasn't the first time this had happened. Teacher Liu usually waited until the end of get out of class before getting angry, and he would never waste a minute of class time.

So the students in Class 2 all thought that Teacher Liu was a really tough person, who could even hold back her anger until the end of get out of class.

This time, Teacher Liu walked to the podium with two forms, looking cheerful, not like she was about to scold anyone.

Some people had already guessed that the results were about to be announced, and they couldn't help but discuss it below.

"The rankings for this midterm exam are out," Teacher Liu cleared her throat.

As expected, the people below fell silent again, afraid of missing a single word.

"The first and second place in the grade this time are both from our class, Pei Ke and Gan Tang. Congratulations to them." After saying that, he led the applause.

The students below weren't surprised at all. Pei Ke was undoubtedly number one, and Gan Tang was also the kind of student who was often praised by the teacher.

"However, there is a very interesting phenomenon this time. The score difference between the first and second place is actually forty points, while the difference between the subsequent places is only one or two points."

Hearing this, there was another round of sighs. Doesn't this mean that Pei Ke got almost perfect scores in every subject?

From then on, everyone looked at Pei Ke differently. His reputation spread throughout the entire grade, and even some teachers in the third year of junior high knew that a genius-like figure had arrived in the first year of junior high. But that's a story for another time.

Then the teacher continued reading out the rankings of each person.

"Su Xun, ranked eighth in the class and twenty-eighth in the grade."

The weight lifted from his heart. It was truly beyond Su Xun's expectations that someone out of more than 300 students could rank 28th.

A surge of joy suddenly welled up inside her, and she wanted to rush home immediately to tell her parents.

Hearing his classmate's grades, Pei Ke breathed a sigh of relief and whispered to Su Xun, "Not bad, he's not stupid."

He was genuinely happy for her. He could see how hard Su Xun worked. Many people slack off after entering the top class, but Su Xun always felt she wasn't good enough and worked hard behind the scenes.

What he thought in his heart was one thing, but what he said out loud was another, because he suddenly wanted to see his deskmate's face contort in anger.

However, he miscalculated this time. Su Xun was still immersed in joy and didn't hold it against him. She even sweetly praised him for being very capable.

Feeling bored, he turned his body back around.

Friday finally arrived, and Su Xun, unable to contain her excitement, ran back to her parents' shop, wanting to tell them about the upcoming exam.

When we arrived at the store, there were very few people around. My parents were sitting and chatting, especially my father, who looked very excited.
