Chapter 24: There's a monster!

"Run! Run! There's a monster! There's a monster here!"

Gu Changlin, looking disheveled, rushed into the director's tent and pulled Director Deng out of his sleeping bag.

Director Deng was a little annoyed at being interrupted from his sweet dream: "What monster? Teacher Gu, were you having a nightmare?"

Gu Changlin roared hoarsely, "I saw it! I saw it with my own eyes! They... they have fish scales on their faces and tails, mermaids—yes, they are mermaids!"

The assistant director, who rushed over upon hearing the news, chuckled: "Teacher Gu, are you perhaps obsessed with completing this mission? There are no mermaids in this world!"

No sooner had he finished speaking than a man crawled into the tent, panting, and said, "Director Deng, a storm is coming, we have to get out of here right away!"

Upon hearing this, Gu Changlin abruptly turned his head to stare at the man, a smirk playing on his lips, and shouted loudly, "The monster is here! The monster is here!"

Then he rushed out of the tent without a second thought.

Everyone present was somewhat confused. Director Deng frowned as he glanced at his back and helplessly pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Send someone to follow him so he doesn't get lost. Wake up the other guests and evacuate them to the homes of residents on higher ground."

Nan Xian was also surprised when she received the news.

The production team always checks the local weather forecast before each recording, so how could they suddenly encounter a storm?

However, before she could think it through, the staff had already packed her luggage, and she followed them to the refuge.

The storm came sooner than everyone expected, and Nan Xian and the others were soaked to the bone. They wrapped themselves in blankets and huddled together with Yao Mingke to drink ginger soup.

With a deafening clap of thunder, the power went out in the house, plunging everything into darkness.

The production team quickly lit the candles, and the room was bright again.

"Hehe, hehe, they're here..."

A low, strange laugh suddenly reached her ears, and Nan Xian subconsciously turned her head to look in that direction.

Gu Changlin huddled alone in a corner, clutching a wet wooden stick in his hand, muttering to himself listlessly with lifeless eyes.

"He's crazy," Yao Mingke muttered under his breath. "I heard he went crazy and rushed into Director Deng's tent, saying there was a monster and that he saw a mermaid."

Mermaid? Nan Xian's heart skipped a beat. She carefully examined Gu Changlin for a few moments. He seemed to sense her gaze, looked up and stared at her with a sinister look.

Nan Xian frowned and looked away.

The rain grew increasingly fierce, as if a hole had been opened in the sky. The raindrops pounded on the eaves, their sound almost drowning out all other noises inside.

Everyone's hearts involuntarily tightened.

At this moment, Director Deng came in from outside wearing a raincoat. He first arranged the rooms for the five guests, and Nan Xian and Yao Mingke were assigned to the same room.

Without electricity, there was no water, so they could only use bottled water to wash their rain-soaked hair and then wrap themselves in towels before going to bed.

After the chaos of the night subsided, everyone quickly fell asleep.

Except for one person—

Gu Changlin huddled in the corner of the cot, clutching a wooden stick, his eyes fixed on the darkness, his mouth moving as he silently muttered something.

He dared not sleep; he was afraid that if he closed his eyes, those terrifying, long, sharp hands would snap his neck.

He sat there until he saw the first light of dawn outside the window before he dared to lie down and rest for a while.

However, he soon had a dream—

In the dream, the merman with the strong gray fish tail held a heart that was still beating. Without hesitation, he tore it open with his sharp teeth and swallowed it whole.

Then he slowly raised his head and revealed a ferocious and terrifying smile.

"Don't eat me—" Gu Changlin suddenly woke up, panting heavily. He hurriedly got out of bed, grabbed the wooden stick next to his pillow, and shrank back into the corner.

The busy crowd stared at him in astonishment, all looking completely bewildered.

Upon seeing this, Director Deng quickly called the on-site doctor to treat him.

However, Gu Changlin was very uncooperative. He screamed and struggled to escape, and would immediately swing his wooden stick to attack anyone who approached.

His "manic" state continued into the afternoon.

After lunch, Gu Changlin returned to normal, but he would occasionally stare blankly at a certain place, and would jump up in fright if someone approached him.

By the second day, the storm had gradually subsided.

Experienced villagers told the production crew that the storm would likely take another day to completely subside. Meanwhile, some camera equipment was damaged during transport and needed to be repaired, so Director Deng suspended all filming.

Meanwhile, Nan Xian and Yao Mingke pulled Lang Zhuo into the room to play Dou Dizhu (a card game).

In the heat of battle, she suddenly received a message from Yu Lin.

Sister, there's something I want to talk to you about privately. I'll wait for you here.

He sent me a location.

Nan Xian was puzzled. Looking at this message, she felt a strange feeling in her heart for some reason.

She made a phone call, but Yu Lin didn't answer.

After much hesitation, she finally took Ding He with her to go and find them.

When she arrived at the designated location, she didn't see a single person. Just as she was wondering what was going on, she suddenly heard a "thump" behind her.

She turned her head in surprise, only to see Ding He lying on the ground, while Gu Changlin was holding a wooden stick, staring at her with a sinister look on his face.

She instinctively turned and ran back, shouting, "Help—"

She had only uttered half a syllable when a sudden pain shot through the back of her neck, and she instantly lost consciousness.
