Chapter 146, the final chapter

I followed Lao Xu into the residential area. The building was an old-style building without an elevator. Lao Xu walked in front, occasionally stomping his feet to turn on the motion-activated lights. By the time we reached the 7th floor, I was panting heavily. Lao Xu took out his key from his bag and opened the door.

The door opened, and before anyone could be seen, Xu Qi's voice rang out: "Dad, why are you back?"

Xu Qi tilted his head and looked outside, just in time to see me standing behind Lao Xu. His eyes widened involuntarily, and he hurriedly pulled his head back and ran over in a panic.

Old Xu pulled out his keys and muttered, "Why are you acting like you've seen a ghost when you see your dad?"

Old Xu opened the door and stood to the side, respectfully extending his hand: "Please come in, Miss. My house is old and a bit dirty and messy, please don't mind."

I smiled and waved my hand, "It was I who disturbed you. Thank you for inviting me to come and have fun."

Old Xu smiled with wrinkles all over his face. After I entered, he closed the door. I stood at the door and looked around, but I didn't see Xu Qi or Ji An. The room was decorated and furnished in an old style, with yellow wooden cabinets hanging on the walls everywhere.

Old Xu took a pair of slippers, put them on, and invited me into the house. I looked down at my shoes, and Old Xu quickly said, "No need to change your shoes, no need to change your shoes, my house is dirty."

I was still a little hesitant. Old Xu's house wasn't dirty at all. The milky white tiles were spotless except for some old scratches. Old Xu noticed my hesitation and laughed, "It's really okay. Actually, we rarely have guests. We don't have any other slippers. Please forgive us, Miss."

Old Xu said he didn't have any slippers, but his hand still unconsciously opened the shoe cabinet. The shoe cabinet was full of men's shoes, not a single pair of women's shoes. My eyes fell on the bottom shoe cabinet, where there was a pair of dark blue slippers. It's normal for a family to have a pair of slippers, but I had seen that style and color at the Central Hospital, the hospital I escaped from.

Old Xu quickly glanced at the shoe cabinet and spotted the pair of blue slippers inside. He picked them up, stared at them for a moment, then turned and shouted, "Xu Qi, when did you buy slippers?"

Old Xu turned the slippers over; the soles were very dirty, with bits of grass and mud mixed in the gaps. He pursed his lips in disgust, put the slippers back in the cabinet, and then looked up with a smile: "Miss, you really don't need to change. Come in and sit down. I'll get you a glass of water."

I smiled politely and said, "Thank you, Uncle Xu."

Old Xu went into the kitchen to wash his hands. I looked around the house. Next to the living room was a corridor with four doors. One of them was the bathroom. The other two doors were open and dark inside. Only one door was closed, but I could see through the crack that the light was on inside.

I slowly walked to the door and listened carefully. I could vaguely hear whispering inside. Just then, Old Xu suddenly stood at the edge of the corridor and said, "Miss, are you looking for the restroom? The door behind you is it."

Old Xu pointed to the door behind me, and I shook my head and laughed, "Uncle Xu, I just saw Xu Qi, why don't I see him now?"

Uncle Xu put the water on the coffee table and walked over, grumbling, "Yeah, that kid, I almost forgot about him. He runs away as soon as he sees me."

As he spoke, Uncle Xu walked up to me, looked at the closed door, and patted it a few times: "Xu Qi, what are you doing? Miss Su is here. Come out and say hello. Don't be so rude."

Old Xu looked down and observed the movement in the inner room. Seeing no response, he said, "Hey, you little brat, are you asking for trouble? Hurry up and open the door. If you don't come, I'm going to look for the key."

As soon as Uncle Xu finished speaking, he turned and walked towards another room. As soon as he reached the door, Xu Qi opened it and looked at us with a wronged expression. I tilted my head and looked into the room. A man was sitting in a chair in front of a desk facing us.

Without a doubt, this was Ji An. Old Xu had already come over, cursing and swearing. I went inside and pushed Xu Qi out of the house, ignoring Xu Qi's cries of pain. I then closed the door behind me.

Ji An didn't turn around, so I stood at the door staring at him. After a while, Ji An still didn't move, so I walked behind him with some impatience and asked, "Why are you avoiding me?"

Ji An didn't speak. I stood behind him, looking down at him. He put his hands together on his thighs, his knuckles trembling slightly. After a moment, I angrily reached out and grabbed Ji An's shoulders, turning him around.

Only then did I get a clear look at the person in front of me. He looked about 70% like Ji Lin'an, but he was thin and pale, with cracked and pale lips. His eyes were very prominent because of his thin face, and there were some white hairs mixed in with his hair.

I couldn't help but frown, momentarily at a loss for words, and even unsure if this person was the Ji Lin'an I knew. Ji Lin'an, however, looked at me with unusual calmness, as if he had expected my expression.

I stared at Ji An for a while, then turned to look at the side. The bed was only a step away from me. I took two steps back and sat on the edge of the bed, asking Ji An, "Do you know me?"

Ji An didn't speak, but looked at me calmly. A feeling I couldn't describe welled up inside me, a mix of surprise, sadness, and grievance. My lips twitched involuntarily, and my eyes suddenly welled up with tears. I subconsciously lowered my head, and in that instant, tears dripped onto the back of my hand.

I tried to take deep breaths to calm myself down, but the more I tried to calm down, the faster the tears fell. The next second, I felt a jolt in my chest. When I came to my senses, I was already in Ji An's arms. This feeling was both familiar and strange. The temperature was familiar, but the sensation was strange. It was no longer a solid touch. I reached out and hugged Ji An. When my hand touched Ji An's back, I froze. Ji An was so thin that he was just skin and bones, but I knew that this was Ji Lin'an.

I hugged Ji An tighter, and I heard Ji An whisper in my ear, "I'm sorry."
