Chapter 10 Song Anxin's Family Home

As it turns out, the original owner's scholar father was right; her husband doted on her and never made her do anything.

Furthermore, the children were taught to be filial to their mother and listen to her. Their parents-in-law were also good, not to mention the mistreatment they would suffer from the new daughter-in-law. As for the eldest brother and sister-in-law, they had helped raise the children quite a bit.

However, the original owner had a lover who was a scholar. He was good at sweet talk and even cheated her out of money, saying that he would definitely marry her after passing the imperial examination.

The original owner's father was used to seeing scholars who preyed on young women and disapproved of his daughter continuing her relationship with him. So he arranged this marriage for the original owner.

The original owner was naturally dissatisfied with this marriage. After marrying into the Lin family, she harbored extreme resentment towards her own family. Even after giving birth, when her family came to visit, they would speak harshly to her. Eventually, her family stopped coming over.

What's most disheartening is that a few years ago, when the scholar passed away, he wanted to see his daughter one last time and sent someone to invite the original owner of the body. The original owner actually cursed the person away, and from then on, her family was completely heartbroken and there was no further contact.

Song Anxin couldn't help but curse the original owner in her heart. How could she treat her parents like this for a poor scholar? She didn't even go to see them one last time. She was heartless and ungrateful. She was out of her mind!

Soon, Song Anxin and her group arrived at the original owner's mother's house, only to be told that the house had already been sold by the original owner and the family had moved away.

"Does this sister-in-law know where the owner of this house has moved to?" Song Anxin asked.

The woman leaned against the door and said, "I don't know, but you can try looking in Yong'an Lane. Maybe you can find it there."

After thanking her, Song Anxin and her sons arrived at Yong'an Lane. Yong'an Lane was located at the very edge of the county town. On the way there, Song Anxin learned that Yong'an Lane was a gathering place for the poor in the county.

Compared to other streets in the county, Yong'an Lane is very narrow, with rows of houses packed tightly together without any gaps. The entire lane is dark and damp.

Song Anxin and the others stood at the entrance of the alley. Lin Fengshou saw this and said, "Mother, why don't I go and ask around first?"

“Okay, your maternal grandmother’s name is Yang Xiu’e, and you also have an uncle named Song Anbang,” Song Anxin instructed.

The road was too narrow; even an oxcart wouldn't be able to pull itself in without its head falling off. So, Lin Fengshou had to go and inquire first.

The Lin brothers, Fengshou and Fengnian, only recently learned about their maternal grandparents' family. They were surprised to find out they had an uncle. Their mother had never mentioned their maternal grandparents' family before, and when they asked their aunt, she only said that they didn't have a good relationship with them and didn't keep in touch.

It wasn't even the time it takes to drink a cup of tea.

Lin Fengshou walked out of the alley with a happy smile. "Mom, Mom, look who I brought!"

Then an old woman appeared behind Lin Fengshou, wearing a coarse cloth shirt that had been starched until it turned white, and her gray hair was neatly combed.

The old woman walked quickly with small steps; her deeply lined face was filled with urgency, and her cloudy eyes were brimming with excitement mixed with a hint of uncertainty.

"Xin'er, Xin'er, is that you?!"

Song Anxin recognized the voice immediately. Although it didn't sound like the original owner's mother's voice, she was certain it was her.

Perhaps it was the longing for family affection, or perhaps it was the warm memories of the original owner's parents that touched her heart, but she quickly ran over.

"Mother, it's me, it's me!"

The mother and daughter were finally reunited, and the old lady burst into tears: "Oh, my child, why did you take so long to come? I've missed you so much."

Song Anxin was also teary-eyed and didn't know what to say, she just kept apologizing: "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, it's Xin'er who's late."

Although Lin Fengnian and the others did not understand what was going on, they were all somewhat moved.

Many residents of Yong'an Lane peeked out to see what had happened.

"Oh, isn't that Song Tongsheng's mother?"

"Yes, who are those people standing at the alley entrance? Why are they making Tong Sheng's mother cry like this? Are they bullying her?"

Grandma Song then realized that she had lost her composure in front of her grandchildren, and quickly wiped away her tears, saying, "No, no, these are my daughter's family. Oh! I'm just happy."

As she spoke, she couldn't help but wipe away her tears.

"Oh, it's a joyous occasion that your daughter is here to see you. Don't cry, Mother Tongsheng. Your eyesight isn't good to begin with, and you might not be able to see your son pass the imperial examinations," a woman advised.

Song Anxin then realized that her mother's eyesight was poor, and quickly changed the subject, saying, "Mother, how did you move here? I've been looking for you everywhere. And why do they all call you Tongsheng's Mother?"

Hearing this, Old Mrs. Song's wrinkled face relaxed considerably as she smiled and said, "Because your younger brother has already passed the imperial examination!"

“Yes, Mother, I went in and asked about my uncle’s name, and they knew. They even said he was a student who had passed the imperial examinations. They were very enthusiastic in giving me directions, and that’s how I ran into my grandmother, so I brought her here,” Lin Fengshou added from the side.

Song Anxin recalled the appearance of the original owner's younger brother, who was ten years younger than her.

When she got married, her younger brother was only six years old and still looked like a little kid. Unexpectedly, that little kid had already become a student of the Imperial Academy.

But thinking about it, it makes sense. After all, the original owner's father was a scholar. When she was a child, her father taught her to read, but she really had no talent for learning and no patience. She was very annoyed with reading, and her scholar father couldn't do anything about it.

"Oh dear, I get so happy that I'm getting senile. Don't stand here, let's go home and talk slowly." Old Mrs. Song led her daughter and grandson inside, her face beaming with joy.

It was difficult to lead the oxcart inside, so they had to leave it with the woman who had just advised her mother. Her house was on the outskirts of the alley, and she had made a side gate next to her courtyard, which was just big enough for the oxcart to get in.

Song Anxin also gave her a coin to get some water and grass for the cow. At first, the woman refused to accept it, but after some refusals, she finally accepted it.

Song Anxin's mother's house is located at the very end of the alley. The house is very small, with only two rooms.

One room was where the original owner's mother lived, another room had some calligraphy and paintings and books, which clearly indicated that his younger brother Song Anbang lived there, and there was a dilapidated thatched house that served as both a kitchen and a living room. The conditions were really not good.

There wasn't much room left for the group to stand in the courtyard; it felt very crowded.

Fortunately, Lin Fengnian and the others were all from the countryside, so they didn't feel anything was wrong. There were plenty of places in the village that were much worse off than this.

Grandma Song quickly invited them to sit down and brought them tea.

"Mother, don't bother, we're all family, no need to be so polite."

Song Anxin quickly helped the old lady sit down.

Then he added, "I haven't introduced you yet. This is your eldest grandson, Lin Fengnian. You met him when he was born. This is your second grandson, Lin Fengshou. And this is your new eldest grandson's wife, Zhang Mei."

"Hello, Grandma! Hello, Grandma..." the children quickly greeted her.

As she acknowledged him, Grandma Song nodded and said, "Good, good, good." Her eyes shone with kindness as she said, "It's so good, Xin'er, your child has grown up so much and has even become a mother-in-law. I wish your father could see this."

As he spoke, a hint of sorrow flashed in his eyes.
