Chapter 12 Abduction

Feng Bingwen seemed to be deep in thought. He thought of the Vermilion Fruit he had eaten, and then he thought of the words "Good deeds will be rewarded, and evil deeds will be punished" on the title page of the Heavenly Book.

In this world where gods, ghosts, and monsters truly exist, if one does good or evil to the extreme, will some special change occur?

Woof! Woof! Woof!

A series of barking dogs rang out. Feng Bingwen looked up and immediately saw a donkey cart being pulled by two honest-looking men, passing through the crowd and approaching him.

The donkey cart was crammed with bamboo cages about half a person's height, and each cage contained one or two dogs. The dogs looked restless and kept barking at pedestrians passing by the cart, drawing disgusted looks from passersby.

The men beside the donkey cart kept offering apologetic smiles to the angry passersby, their expressions humble.

"A trader who buys stray dogs?"

Looking at the strange group of people and the pack of frenzied dogs on the donkey cart, Feng Bingwen muttered to himself, but couldn't help but fantasize about how much good karma he could gain if he had money right now, bought all these dogs from the dog dealers, and released them back into the wild.

However, he was just thinking about it. Firstly, he had no money, and secondly, judging from the behavior of these dogs, they might have some kind of problem. If they were released into the wild and bit or killed someone, that would be a terrible sin. It would be unreasonable for him not to bear some of the indirect consequences.

"Woof! Woof! Woof!"

At this moment, the donkey cart drove up to Feng Bingwen. On the donkey cart, a half-grown yellow dog that was locked in a bamboo cage suddenly saw Feng Bingwen, and its eyes, which seemed to be filled with tears, suddenly showed an excited expression.

The yellow dog barked wildly at Feng Bingwen, its small body slamming against the bamboo cage with all its might. Pale yellow fur fell down, and faint red streaks of blood appeared on the dog's body.

"Get away from me!"

Feng Bingwen stared at the somewhat strange yellow dog, wanting to observe it further, when the old man holding his leash frowned and pulled him back a few steps.

"I'm sorry, I've disturbed you, young master."

A man guarding the donkey cart saw Feng Lingjun, dressed in a plain robe and exuding a scholarly air, bowing his head and smiling obsequiously, looking quite embarrassed.

"It's alright, you just need to hurry up and leave."

The old man gestured for the group to leave quickly.

"Okay, I apologize for the inconvenience."

The man bowed and apologized repeatedly. Out of the corner of his eye, he glanced at the child being led by the old man, who had a scholarly air about him, before returning to the donkey cart beside him. He pulled out a thorny branch from his waist and, through the cage, fiercely whipped the mad yellow dog.

"Damn beast, what are you yelling about?"

Amidst shouts and curses, the donkey cart, escorted by several unassuming and equally honest-looking men, gradually disappeared into the distance.

"What's wrong?"

At this moment, the old man frowned and looked down at his grandson beside him, who was still watching the donkey cart that had gone some distance away.

"nothing!"

Feng Bingwen pursed his lips and shook his head. The man who had been riding with him had glanced at him, and that seemingly casual glance had sent shivers down his spine, raising goosebumps all over his body and giving him an indescribable sense of dread.

"Loosen your grip, you're using too much force!"

The old man spoke helplessly.

"oh oh."

Feng Bingwen quickly withdrew his strength. He had inadvertently been provoked and used too much force, making his old man's palms turn white.

"I'm going back."

After this little incident, the old man and the young man left the lively street, but after walking a distance, they both realized that something was wrong.

On the streets, the number of constables was increasing at a visible rate. These constables carried knives at their waists, never letting them out of their hands. They had solemn expressions and exuded a menacing aura. They questioned and investigated anyone on the street who seemed suspicious.

And it wasn't just these constables; there were also some agitated civilians carrying kitchen knives and sticks, rummaging through the streets and alleys, searching high and low for something, as if they had lost some extremely valuable treasure.

What happened?

Feng Bingwen was completely bewildered. Looking at the constables who seemed to have come out in full force, and the common people who were searching with the constables, he had a vague feeling that something terrible had happened.

When he entered the city, he felt that this small town was tranquil, comfortable and peaceful, an excellent choice for living out one's old age. But now, the peaceful atmosphere has been diluted and is instead tinged with a sense of gloom.

Just then, a man carrying a machete walked past him. The man's face was contorted with rage, his eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like a wild beast that had lost its cubs and was in a state of hysterical madness.

The old man was also taken aback by the scene before him. He stopped a familiar constable who was carrying a knife and asked him his question.

"Officer Zhao, what has happened in the city? Why is there such a panic?"

"So it's Mr. Feng."

The constable, who had been stopped, was about to lash out, but after seeing the person in front of him clearly, he suppressed his anxiety and explained.

“A group of children went to the city. So far, more than a dozen families’ children have gone missing, and even the wife of one family has disappeared.”

"What? Such a thing actually happened?"

Feng Lingjun's expression also became serious, and Feng Bingwen could clearly feel the old man holding his hand even tighter.

"You must keep a close eye on your grandson. These kids are very arrogant and don't take us seriously at all."

At this point, the constable surnamed Zhao was also filled with rage.

The missing children and women all disappeared today. At first, when one or two families came to the yamen to report the case, the yamen officials didn't pay much attention. But when more than a dozen families came to the yamen at the same time, saying that their children were missing, even the county magistrate, who was enjoying his time with his concubine, couldn't sit still anymore.

In a single day, more than a dozen children were abducted from his jurisdiction. If the perpetrators are not found, forget about promotion; even keeping his official position is in question.

"This is outrageous! To do this in broad daylight is simply lawless!"

The old man looked indignant, but his face also showed worry.

"Mr. Feng, I don't have time to talk to you anymore. The county magistrate has ordered a city-wide search. Even if we have to dig three feet into the ground, we must find these human traffickers and bring them to justice!"

"You go ahead with your work, don't worry about me."

After bidding farewell to the equally menacing constable, the old man took Feng Bingwen's hand and left without lingering.

"Let's go, let's hurry out of the city and go home!"

But when the grandfather and grandson reached the city gate, they saw a familiar face—the same villager they had met earlier that day. The farmer was sitting by the city gate, wailing loudly, his voice filled with despair.
