Chapter Eighteen: The Variety Show Continues

The news that Ye Chu was lying on the sofa and posting on Weibo spread like wildfire among her fans, but only the person involved knew that she was actually in the hotel where she was staying.

For the filming of major variety shows, unless there's a specific program requirement or the filming location is particularly demanding, the artists' accommodations are usually not neglected. The part about caring for the giant pandas at the zoo is over, and while cleaning the panda viewing base, a light drizzle fell, causing the temperature to drop somewhat. Ye Chu got caught in the rain for a while, which led to a slight fever. Fortunately, it wasn't serious; after taking medicine and applying a fever-reducing patch, her temperature quickly went down.

I slept without any dreams.

The filming began early the next morning. After having breakfast provided by the production team, Ye Chu and little Alix met up with the other groups in the hotel lobby. Michael was still as lively as ever; it seemed that her previous assignment to help in the hotel kitchen hadn't affected her at all.

"Sister Chu, what was your mission last time?" Michael pulled Jiang Jiang closer and whispered in her ear. However, everyone present knew that such conversations under the camera were not confidential, and Ye Chu also understood that Michael was doing this to get screen time.

Since she'll get screen time anyway, why not?

"The production team gave us a map drawn by a child, and we went to the zoo to take care of the giant pandas." The two of them looked sneaky, as if they didn't realize that the cameras had been recording their underground transactions.

Michael continued, "Is the mission difficult?"

"It really tests your physical strength and arm strength." Ye Chu thought for a moment. "It's not that it's troublesome, but it will leave you exhausted after a whole day."

"Okay, intelligence received." Michael smiled brightly, took Jiang Jiang's hand again, turned to face the camera, and gave an expression that said, "I know everything, I'm not afraid of you."

"Alright, no whispering allowed," the director shouted. "Come and draw your next assignments."

The props used this time were simple cards. Several people took turns drawing one and showing it to the camera. The cards had the names of different celebrities written on them.

"Wow! Sister Chu Chu, you actually drew Actor Gu!" Michael exclaimed with wide eyes, "Are you the legendary lucky one? I'm so jealous."

Michael had a "I'm so jealous" look on his face, which made the others around him burst into laughter. Wan Chen picked up the conversation: "Looks like everyone here is a lemon spirit today."

"Although I don't know what the card I drew means, drawing Gu Yingdi must mean something special. I don't know whether to congratulate Chuchu or tell her to take care," Qian Yiyi said, then added meaningfully, "Speaking of Gu Yingdi, the first episode of the TV series Chuchu starred in with him aired last night, right? I watched it, and it was great. His acting was superb! I just don't know if it's finished airing by the time it's broadcast?"

"Wow! Sister Yiyi is biased, she's secretly helping Sister Chuchu promote her movie, no way, I want to do it too!" Zhang Zesheng chimed in with a grin: "Hehe, the new movie 'The Bell' will be released on June 6th this year, please give it your support!"

"Alright, alright, you lot." After they finished their promotion, the director shouted loudly, feigning displeasure, "Are we still doing the task or not?"

"Yes, yes, yes! Of course, there will be tasks to complete." Michael nodded with a grin, as if he hadn't just been eagerly promoting the new movie. "Director, just tell me! I guarantee I'll complete any task!"

"Hmph!" The director feigned a slight arrogance and said quietly, "This is a new format that our program has never tried before! The name of this format is Infiltration!"

"What is this? Are we inviting the big shots on the card to star in a spy movie?" Qian Yiyi asked.

"A spy thriller is out of the question; our production team doesn't have the budget." Seemingly embarrassed by the lack of funds, the director coughed twice to cover his embarrassment. "Ahem, this mission is to go to the film sets where the celebrities on the cards are currently working. The production team has already arranged everything; each person will have a new identity—a staff member working behind the scenes with their child. The entire shoot will be filmed using hidden cameras. The core of the mission is to uncover the unknown side of these celebrities, and the standard for success is to remain undetected for a full day!"

"Huh?!" Michael exclaimed dramatically, "No way! Director, look at all our faces! We've all been on TV, mobile phones, magazines, and the big screen, how could we possibly not be recognized!"

"You're such a busybody!" The director had barely finished speaking when several staff members came over with props: "The disguise props are all here: work clothes, hats, masks. Oh, by the way, if you get caught, there will be terrible punishment."

"Excuse me, director, I'd like to ask, what should we do with the children?" Ye Chu asked.

"Oh, that's a good question. Don't forget what our program is called. It's called Growing Up with Our Babies. Of course, the kids are with you, but their task is a bit special. Now, I'm going to confiscate everyone's phones and wallets, so please hand them over willingly."

Seeing that everyone obediently handed over their items, the director nodded in satisfaction: "Not bad. Since today's filming uses hidden cameras, our only way to communicate with everyone is through the children. Every two hours, an easily detectable NPC will arrive on set. Remember to cover for the children when they meet the NPC."

Even as they prepared to get into the car arranged by the production team, Ye Chu's twitching lips couldn't stop. The others hugged her with considerable sympathy, knowing that Alix was of mixed race, making her remarkably conspicuous and easily recognizable.

"Chu Chu, keep it up." Michael patted Ye Chu on the shoulder and sighed, "It's already hard enough to pretend in front of a big movie star, but I didn't expect to have to cover for the kids too. Chu Chu, I'm not jealous anymore. You're not lucky, you're unlucky."

Ye Chu: Hehe...hehehe...

"Don't worry too much, Chu Chu. I've watched the previous seasons of the show, and the punishments aren't too severe. It'll be alright." Qian Yiyi touched her nose, clearly just trying to comfort her.

Ye Chu: It's okay, I can handle it.

“Hey, you two shouldn’t relax too much. These kids are all quite young, and they can’t even recognize all the words yet. What if they can’t relay the message properly…” Zhang Zesheng didn’t finish his sentence, but everyone present understood what he meant. If the kids had trouble relaying the message, it could lead to the mission’s failure, since there was no guarantee that the production team wouldn’t secretly prank them.

“Zesheng is right. It seems everyone is at risk of being punished for failing the mission.” Wan Chen said, squatting down to ask Lulu, “Lulu, let me ask you, what grade are you in?”

Lulu blinked and held up a finger: "First grade—" She dragged out the last syllable, her voice soft and sweet, but the three words she uttered sent a chill down Wan Chen's spine.

So when everyone got into their respective cars, they all sighed in unison.

What else can we do? We can only do our best and leave the rest to fate. Hopefully, the punishment won't be too severe.
