Miwako took the paper and said in surprise, "Wow, Kousuke, you drew really well!"
She then flipped through the next few sheets of paper, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead: "But why did you design a few poses for him?"
On the drawing paper that Miwako was handed by Kōyū, apart from the first normal portrait, the following drawings included close-ups of arson that Kōyū had imagined, as well as close-ups of actions like those in a magazine. This wasn't a drawing of a criminal; this was a drawing of a criminal appearing on the front page of a fashion magazine!
Guangyou scratched his head: "You guys were arguing too much, so I just drew something."
Takagi took the drawing paper and exclaimed, "Wow, this is pretty good! It's worlds apart from Officer Sato's!"
Suddenly, Takagi felt a chill run down his spine, and his lips instantly lost their color. He smiled bitterly at Miwako, who seemed to be on the verge of exploding, and said, "Well, let's go to the scene to collect evidence."
Miwako snorted, then stopped pursuing the matter with Takagi and nodded.
The white bird, which had secretly slipped back from somewhere, twitched its ears. Hearing that they needed to collect evidence on-site, it trotted over happily: "Then take my car!"
Miwako smiled and politely declined, "No need to trouble yourself, I have to go around to another place anyway, I'll just pass by on the way."
She said nostalgically, "Today still holds special significance for me."
Shiratori tentatively asked, "Is today Officer Sato's birthday?"
Miwako's expression remained unchanged as she calmly stated, "Quite the opposite."
The opposite of a birthday is a death anniversary, which usually has special significance for relatives. According to Guangyou's memory, the death anniversary of a relative is Miwako's father.
The group followed Miwako to a crossroads. Miwako placed a potted plant on the ground, clasped her hands together, and knelt beside a telephone pole, her face solemn and filled with longing.
Cars sped past on the road, the roar of their engines having no effect on Miwako's current state of mind. She closed her eyes and whispered something.
Shiratori leaned against the car, pondered for a moment, and suddenly said, "I remember now, today is the anniversary of the death of Officer Sato's father, Inspector Sato Masayoshi. Yes, that's right, he died on this day."
"Huh? Is that really true?" Gao Mutou turned his head and looked at the figure with concern when he heard that today was the anniversary of Miwako's father's death.
Shiratori nodded and began to tell the story he knew: "Yes, exactly eighteen years ago today, Officer Sato's father died at this intersection while chasing a robber and murderer."
"When he reached the intersection, he was hit by a truck. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily that day, and the ambulance was late in arriving at the scene. He breathed his last in the ambulance and passed away in the watchful eyes of Officer Sato and his family who arrived just in time."
Shiratori frowned slightly, thought for a moment, and continued, "I remember that case was called..."
"The melancholy young man," Conan said, reciting the case's name for Shiratori.
He also had a deep impression of that case: "The detective who was hit by the truck kept repeating this sentence to the hit-and-run driver, so the case was later called the 'Sorrowful Man Case.' Although a large-scale search network was set up at the time, it was brought to nothing because of the death of the detective who had important clues, and the statute of limitations had expired three years ago."
After saying this, Conan seemed to realize something and quickly turned back, putting on an innocent smile, and said, "Well, I heard Uncle Mori say before that he wasn't a detective before, so..."
Shiratori and Takagi nodded; the reason was indeed very convincing.
Seeing Conan's relieved expression, Kōyū knew that Conan was thinking, "Thank goodness, I almost gave myself away just now."
With Shiratori and Conan's introduction, Takagi also remembered this case that had appeared on TV many times: "The only clue to that meticulously planned crime was a less than 10-second clip captured by the security camera in the robbed bank."
The case back then baffled everyone. How exactly did that police officer lock onto the first target and track him down? These questions remained unanswered after his death. But, to Takagi's utter surprise, that police officer was none other than Miwako's father.
He had heard that Miwako's father had died young, but he didn't know why he had died.
Miwako stood up and said, "It's not your fault. Even if the name of the murderer in that case is still in everyone's mind, the public won't remember the police officer who died in the line of duty. If you're not a police officer, it's hard for anyone to remember him either."
These words brought a pang of sadness to everyone's hearts, but they were also a cruel truth.
Miwako didn't care whether she would be remembered or not. She became a police officer simply to uphold the justice in her heart and to carry on the cause her father had dedicated his life to.
Yuan Tai was puzzled and asked, "That doesn't make sense either. Shouldn't the truck driver have been able to see the robber's face?"
That being said, the fact is that the prisoner was wearing a long raincoat, and the truck driver wasn't even sure if he was male or female.
Even the robbers in the security camera footage were wearing hats and sunglasses, completely covered from head to toe, clearly well-prepared.
"But didn't the police confirm that the robber's name was Chou Silang?"
Now that we have a name, and there aren't many of them, the difficulty of the investigation should be greatly reduced. But Miwako shook her head: "But everyone with this name has been ruled out as a suspect."
“But, is his name really ‘Sorrowful Man’?” Kōyū looked up at Miwako very seriously. “What if Officer Satō actually said ‘Go and turn yourself in’?”
