Chapter 144 Three Shots

A light drizzle fell, and people in the city opened their umbrellas. Many people were also a little down because of the rain, but the children were not affected. They actually enjoyed the special activities of rainy days, such as splashing in puddles.

Although Ayumi and the other two didn't participate, their faces were filled with smiles that were completely opposite to the rainy day. Ayumi's voice was as clear as a bell: "I wonder if Conan is home. It won't be fun if he's not."

Genta, unusually, didn't mention food, and maintained his smile: "Yeah, we finally figured out this riddle."

Kōyū walked side by side with Ai under an umbrella. The large umbrella protected them both from getting wet. Kōyū glanced at Ai beside him and asked, "Ai, do you like the rain?"

Ai Haibara, hands behind her back and head slightly bowed, said, "I don't really like it. The day I escaped from the organization was also a rainy day, I..."

"It's my fault, I forgot about this," Guangyou said apologetically.

Ai shook her head: "It's okay."

Even though the two walked slowly, they caught up with Ayumi and her two companions who were waiting for the green light. A blush of pleasure unconsciously appeared on the faces of the three of them.

Genta murmured, "I really look forward to seeing Conan admit defeat."

Hearing this, Ai Haibara smiled slightly, while Kōyū's lips twitched slightly: "Don't you three underestimate that Conan guy?"

These three harbor a lot of resentment towards Conan...

Ayumi retorted, "We really had a hard time coming up with this!"

What are you three grinning about?

Conan's voice immediately snapped the three of them out of their reverie.

Ayumi's face was full of anticipation. She couldn't wait to see Conan kneel on the ground and admit defeat to them. She quickly ran a few steps ahead and said to Conan, "Conan, the three of us have come up with the ultimate brain teaser! We were just about to go to your house to find you!"

"Questions and answers?"

Conan was disdainful. He wasn't targeting any particular person, but rather Ayumi and her two children. He was also helpless. Bring on the question-and-answer session; if he couldn't answer, he would admit defeat!

“Listen carefully, when we asked Haibara what kind of person she thought Conan was, she looked at the moon and said, ‘It can’t really be considered summer.’”

To this question, Mitsuhiko gave two options: "One is that Haibara is praising you, and the other is that Haibara is belittling you. Guess which one is the answer?"

"Wow, these three are bursting with confidence, they even used the word 'guess'." Guangyou couldn't help but applaud their confidence.

But the slap in the face didn't come late this time. After listening to the three people's questions, Conan only took five breaths to come up with the answer: "I know, the answer to this question is two! Because the summer moon is mainly in the sixth, seventh and eighth months, and a sliver means it's not normal."

The disappointment on the faces of the three of them was almost palpable. The puzzle they had painstakingly come up with was solved in just five breaths. Ayumi, who had always been a big fan of Conan, quickly composed herself and praised, "That's amazing!"

Ayumi was alright, but the other two weren't in such a good mood. Genta looked up at the overcast sky and said, "Seriously, this isn't fun at all!"

"So, what were you three laughing about just now?" Conan was completely unfazed and even felt a little amused.

After yawning, Kwangyu explained for the three of them, "They're thinking about how you'd give up when you couldn't answer the riddle."

At that moment, the green light of the traffic light was flashing wildly. Yuan Tai noticed this and hurriedly tried to cross the road, but a deep, magnetic voice behind him made everyone freeze in place.

"A flashing green light means the same thing as a flashing yellow light; it's to remind you to wait for the next green light before crossing."

The man who spoke was dressed in a suit, had a square face, and raised eyebrows. Guangyou thought the phrase "authoritative without anger" suited him very well.

Mitsuhiko sighed, "It's really unpleasant to be scolded for no reason."

Ayumi comforted him, "After all, he cares about our safety. It's just that this uncle looks a bit fierce."

Conan turned to look at the uncle from before and said, "Now it's my turn to ask a question. Can you guess what that uncle does?"

The three of them were completely baffled. They were still young and didn't have Conan's observational skills, so the answer was purely based on guesswork.

"A teacher at the school?"

"If he's a salesman, he didn't bring a suitcase."

"Could it be a place that sells eel rice?"

Yuan Tai's answer made Guang You both laugh and cry. He said, "This uncle is a detective. First, it's hard to hide the aura he has developed from being a policeman for a long time. Second, he stopped us from crossing the road. Third, and most importantly, didn't you see that this uncle was holding a police handbook?"

"That seems to be true." The three of them laughed awkwardly.

The green light turned green at that moment, and just as everyone reached the other side of the road, they heard several muffled sounds behind them. Looking in the direction of the sound, they saw the uncle from before lying on the ground.

Conan subconsciously turned his head and saw the old man being attacked. He hurriedly tried to rush to the old man's side, but the red light was on. Conan wanted to run the red light, but the drivers didn't know and ignored him, passing right by him.

After cursing under his breath, Conan hurriedly told Ayumi and the others to call an ambulance. Conan then crossed the overpass and went around to the other side of the road, but the person who attacked the old man had already run far away.

The pedestrians on the street had just seen the uncle clutching his chest and looking pained when Conan, seeing that he couldn't find the culprit, gave up the idea of chasing him. He ran to the uncle's side, squatted down, and asked, "Hang in there, uncle, do you know who attacked you?"

The man's eyes were wide open and bloodshot. His mouth was slightly open as if he wanted to say something but he couldn't. He could only clutch the pocket in front of his left breast with his right hand and wail in pain at Conan.

Seemingly having exhausted all his strength, the man closed his eyes and released his grip after that action last night. Conan sighed, knowing that the man was probably beyond saving.

After the others finished their calls, they rushed to the phone booth. Raindrops fell on the uncle, and blood spread with the rain. Pedestrians on the street stopped and looked on with pity and regret.

Kōyū arrived a second after Conan, but by the time he arrived, the uncle had already stopped breathing. If it weren't for Kōyū, he might have been able to keep the uncle going for a while, but the uncle's injuries caused him to lose his life very quickly.

The murderer fired three shots into the man's chest with a pistol. Given the close proximity of the three bullets, internal bleeding was inevitable. Furthermore, the man had gripped the murderer's chest with tremendous force, which stimulated his blood circulation. This provided Conan with a clue, though it was not obvious. However, while leaving a clue, it also hastened the murderer's own demise.

The rain came down even harder...
