"Boss, give me another bottle of wine..."
"Guest, you've had enough to drink. You've been drinking since this afternoon; it'll cause health problems."
"Just give me the money, why talk so much nonsense!"
"Okay, okay, I'll give you another bottle."
This conversation takes place between the owner of an izakaya (Japanese pub) in Tokyo and a customer. There are only two or three customers in the izakaya at the time, and one of them seems out of place among the other customers.
Beneath her slightly messy bangs were a pair of eyes that were clearly drunk and lifeless, and a blush rose on her dark face because of the alcohol.
The man held the bottle in one hand, taking large gulps of liquor every now and then. The slightly bitter liquor immediately contorted his expression as soon as it entered his mouth, but after enduring it for a while, he still managed to swallow it.
This situation lasted for a long time, and the sky outside changed from a pale blue to a deep blue, with twinkling stars hanging in the sky emitting a faint light.
"Here's your drink, sir." The izakaya owner placed a bottle of juice in front of the man and advised, "You really can't drink any more. If something happens, my small business can't afford to lose money."
"Boss, you're really... really long-winded. If something happens to me, I definitely won't implicate you."
Compared to before, the man seemed even more drunk, so his movements became unusually slow. Fortunately, the shop owner had already opened the bottle cap; otherwise, given his current condition, it would probably have taken him ages to open it.
"Huh? This wine...why is it so sweet? Boss, did you give me the wrong one?" The man peered into the bottle with one eye closed. "Why does it taste so much like fruit juice?"
"This is just a different kind of drink; you finished the one you had before." The izakaya owner was clearly not new to this situation, and answered very skillfully. "This one doesn't taste bitter, but the alcohol content is no lower than the previous one."
Because he was already drunk, the man didn't suspect anything, and took another swig, saying, "I must say... this wine tastes much better than the one before."
"Of course." The izakaya owner breathed a slight sigh of relief when he saw that the man hadn't noticed. He had seen people who wanted to get drunk before, but he had never seen anyone drink to death like this.
Fortunately, he had prepared this juice in the store. It had a slight smell of alcohol, but it didn't contain any alcohol at all. The only consequence of drinking too much of it was going to the toilet a few more times, which was much better than alcohol poisoning.
The customer in front of him had been drinking since the afternoon and hadn't stopped for a moment. Except for going to the toilet, his butt hadn't left the chair.
"Boss, what would you do if your wife cheated on you?"
The question the man suddenly asked left the young, single izakaya owner, barely in his twenties, speechless.
A wife's infidelity presupposes that he already has a wife, but he didn't...
Asking him, who has never been in a relationship, to answer this question is really putting him in a difficult position.
However, the moment the boss heard the question, he realized that the man in front of him was probably a lovesick fool, and that he was probably drowning his sorrows in his shop because his wife had betrayed him.
Seemingly sensing the boss's sympathetic look, the man waved his hand and said, "It wasn't me, it was my friend..."
Well, now they're even making friends out of thin air.
The boss shook his head helplessly. He really wanted to ask, "The friend you're talking about isn't you, is it?"
However, seeing the man's current state, he forcibly suppressed the urge to ask questions. If the man's emotional breakdown was caused by him, then the sin would be enormous.
"If it were me, I would have a good talk with my wife." The boss was preparing to give the man some advice, lest he do something crazy while drunk.
He didn't want to see a newspaper report one morning about a body being found somewhere.
The man took a big gulp; the "wine" in his mouth was sweet, but his smile was full of bitterness: "But she betrayed you, can you still talk to her properly?"
"Grandma once said, 'A day as husband and wife is worth a hundred days of kindness, and a hundred days as husband and wife is as deep as the sea.'"
As the owner cleaned the table, he said, "Grandma also said, 'It takes a hundred years of cultivation to share a boat ride, and a thousand years to share a pillow.'"
Even if she betrayed you, it can't erase the beautiful memories you shared together.
"If we negate the past just because she betrayed us, wouldn't that seem a bit heartless?"
The man suddenly laughed after hearing this: "You haven't experienced it, so you don't understand. She betrayed me, what's the point of showing any mercy? She's the heartless one! She's the one who's ruthless!"
Well, now we can't make friends out of thin air anymore.
"Sigh, she may be heartless, but the two of them could have resolved things amicably. Why did they have to fight like this? Of course, you're not wrong either."
The boss stopped what he was doing and continued, "But since she betrayed you, just forget about her. Why cry your heart out, get drunk, or even try to kill yourself over someone who doesn't care about you?"
"Look at you, guest, you're still quite young. You have plenty of good days ahead of you, why insist on hanging yourself on a crooked tree?"
Of course he knew that these things were easier said than done. In such a situation, a normal person would lose control of their emotions. However, such words were not appropriate to say to someone who was already drunk and incoherent.
Otherwise, if this man does something to hurt his wife, it will be too late.
However, what the boss didn't know was that the man had already finished the job.
"What you said makes sense. Since he... has no feelings for me anymore, why should I cry for him, why should I drink myself into oblivion for him..." The man's bitter smile was tinged with self-mockery. "Tell me... am I being... pathetic?"
