Side Story (2): Hokkaido Travelogue, A Painting That Became Reality

The two of them spent a long time browsing here, and finally bought a very exquisite glass carousel music box as a souvenir.

Last night, the two mentioned Shunji Iwai's "Love Letter" during their walk, and on a whim, they visited the filming location of the movie version of "Love Letter".

The crossroads where the two main characters in "Love Letter" brushed past each other, the old Otaru branch of the Japanese cruise ship where one of the main characters discussed things with his colleague...

Teitan Elementary School has an early holiday, so the two had plenty of time to explore.

Therefore, the two strolled leisurely along Otaru Port toward Temiya Park in Tenguyama.

There weren't many tourists when they arrived, and hardly anyone walked along this road.

On the pristine white snow, only the footprints left by the two of them walking side by side were clearly visible.

After visiting the park, on their way back to the hotel, the two passed by a small village on a hillside.

The two stood there, using the village and the slope as a backdrop, and made some guesses:

Perhaps the protagonist named Fujii Itsuki in "Love Letter" lived in that village.

When he was in middle school, Fujii Itsuki rode his bicycle down the hillside and playfully put a paper bag over a girl's head.

He didn't really mean to play a prank; he just couldn't say "I like you" and could only express his feelings for the girl through a prank to attract her attention.

Thinking of this, Guangyou couldn't help but sigh.

How many boys did similar things when they first fell in love?

As evening approached, the two arrived at one of the filming locations for "Love Letter," the Otaru Canal Craft Museum.

They planned to experience the entire glassmaking process here, and also take a cable car to Tengu Mountain, one of the filming locations for "Love Letter," to watch the sunset.

The two tried to make two human-shaped glass objects.

However, having no prior experience in making them, the finished product could only be vaguely discernible as humanoid. Guangyou felt that what the two of them made resembled a silly girl in the form of a cell phone.

After experiencing glassmaking, Kōyū and Aoi went to the rooftop to enjoy the view and take a break.

There's a guestbook on the top floor of the craft museum; it's quite thick.

I glanced through the comments and found that tourists from all over the world had left their wishes in the guestbook in their own languages.

The simplest message is "I love Otaru".

However, Kōsuke doesn't say he loves Otaru; he simply enjoys the time he spends with Ai in this city full of northern charm.

He left his heartfelt message in the guestbook:

"Even as time goes by, my feelings for her remain the same as they were at the beginning."

"What do you want to write?" Kōyū asked, handing the pen to Ai with some curiosity.

Taking the pen, Ai didn't answer Kousuke, but instead wrote down what was on her mind and her reply to Kousuke in the guestbook:

Yes, it will.

Every word and every stroke in this short sentence is filled with Ai's confidence in the future.

Afterwards, Ai asked Kousuke:

"Now do you know what I want to write?"

"Understood." Guangyou nodded with a smile.

...

After their trip to Otaru, Kousuke and Ai went to Furano.

They came at the wrong time.

Every May, all kinds of flowers bloom in profusion, turning the Furano hills into a vast sea of flowers that is a feast for the eyes.

However, when they went there at this time, all they could see was snow.

Therefore, the two thought that they could come back to Furano during summer vacation to see the lavender fields, and coincidentally, there was also a lavender festival during the summer vacation.

Furano served as their transit point during this trip.

Since their departure, the two have spent most of their time sightseeing at various tourist attractions.

It was fun, but it was also quite tiring.

After resting for two days in Furano, the two continued their journey.

Their itinerary is to travel all the way to Shiretoko, explore the area, and then head back to Tokyo, stopping by Biei along the way.

With plenty of time left in spring break, the two visited Lake Akan, Lake Kussharo, and Lake Mashu in Akan National Park on their way to Shiretoko.

Although they are all lakes, their landscapes are different.

Lake Akan is a scenic spot, and it is also home to green algae. On one of the islands in the lake, called "Chūrui Island," there is a green algae observation and exhibition center.

There are also famous lakeside hot springs in eastern Hokkaido nearby.

They booked a hot spring room nearby and used the hot spring to relieve the fatigue they had accumulated during their trip.

Because they arrived in the evening, they visited the lake at around 7 a.m. the next morning, when the entire lake was shrouded in a light mist.

The trees on the opposite shore of the lake and the distant hills were faintly visible in the mist.

The tranquil, clear lake perfectly reflects the vast mist and the distant towering mountains.

As the sun slowly rises, the sunlight filters through the thin mist, adding a hazy beauty to the entire scene, truly giving one the feeling of being in a fairyland.

Although the temperature was a bit low, seeing such a view made it all worthwhile for Guangyou and Xiaoai to have come so early.

Lake Kussharo is a crater lake formed by a volcanic eruption, so the water is acidic and almost no fish can survive in it.

The lake water was very clear, a crystal-clear blue, quite beautiful.

If we're talking about other distinctive features, then it's probably the swans that inhabit Lake Kussharo.

Although these swans are not particularly friendly, they are not very afraid of people because many tourists visit Lake Kussharo.

Lake Mashu is a crater lake formed by a massive volcanic eruption about 7,000 years ago, and is known as the lake with the highest transparency in all of Japan.
