Chapter 19 The Unpredictable Future

"Resupply before the big battle."

Jiang Ling thought of this as she followed the sign toward the munitions warehouse on the first floor. Afterward, she began to worry more and more about the journey ahead, feeling that she would definitely encounter a more intense battle later.

Ruan Danxin and the other person followed her all the time. They looked around from time to time, and it seemed that they were very curious about the creations in the site.

Of course, the scenery here is indeed rare for ordinary people to see.

This transit station, used as a military camp, was significantly larger than a typical medium-sized station, and its energy distribution was also significantly different. Only two sections of the residential area were used for living and working, while the rest had been converted into a training ground and a shooting range. Jiang Ling also spotted an area occupied by numerous small compartments; that was likely the holographic training machine mentioned online.

Yes, they are those "learning machines" or something else that are commonly seen in online articles, but these things are not as versatile as those things. They are more like those somatosensory game consoles that simulate flight or driving.

From time to time, some soldiers came in and out of these small compartments. It was said that they were undergoing preliminary training on exoskeleton-related equipment. It seemed that they would start to deploy exoskeletons on a large scale sooner or later.

Jiang Ling herself had once come pretty close to the exoskeleton, but unfortunately, time and events kept her from getting the better of her. She felt a sense of regret now, thinking that if she had saved the damaged exoskeleton that day, she would have been in a completely different situation now.

Perhaps it was because they had arrived at the wrong time, the ambient sound on the second floor wasn't bustling. Compared to the previous mid-level station, the noise level here was almost gone, with only the occasional sound of drills reaching their ears. Most of the time, it was relatively quiet.

Several more neatly arrayed teams of soldiers passed by Jiang Ling and the other two. Their spirits and demeanor were exactly the same as she remembered, leaving her feeling a bit dazed. It was as if she were watching a movie. As she immersed herself in the scene, she began to be swept up by the iron-blooded, murderous atmosphere. She was certain she wasn't possessed by some mutant's superpowers, but she still joined these young men in softly singing the marching song.

The brightness here was dimmer than at other stations, while the third floor where they were docked was brighter than at other stations. Jiang Ling felt the brightness change as they climbed up to the basement level.

Now she was sure that the lighting at this site was the same everywhere, as if there was a standard. Although some visual differences were lost, it made Jiang Ling feel a lot more at ease.

From the outside, this floor resembled a massive military factory, with vehicles and weapons in various states of maintenance arranged in a regular pattern. Parts were stacked around the intermediate products, organized into categories. They had relocated some of their industrial capacity to the underground level, and the original space had been converted into warehouses and outposts. This was the most striking difference of this site.

Another difference was that there were far fewer patrols inside the station than elsewhere. The overall atmosphere was tight on the outside, but relaxed on the inside. Jiang Ling and the other two were only questioned once after getting off the train. The rest of the journey was smooth sailing, and even when they wandered around the various sections on the second floor below ground, no one paid them any attention.

Jiang Ling curiously surveyed the semi-finished items. Most of them resembled several common vehicles, some being disassembled, a few seemingly undergoing repairs, and others on the assembly line. She recognized two wheeled vehicles. One was a three-proof off-road vehicle, a common sight at other sites. This rugged vehicle was a favorite of many search teams, and it was said that many searchers would risk their lives for points just to own an off-road vehicle. The other was a pickup truck, a type she had ridden several times. This type of vehicle was actually more civilian, with many modified models available, some even capable of running on tracks.

There weren't many workers here, and even the occasional worker was busy repairing the automated equipment. Jiang Ling was slightly shocked when she saw the giant robotic arms. She finally understood what the searcher had meant—"The limiting factor here is the materials."

Of course, the three of them weren't going there for these vehicles. Jiang Ling had looked at the map and realized they'd better get an amphibious vehicle, otherwise they'd probably need to learn to swim for the rest of the journey. The reservoir in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River had clearly been bombed, and although the cold weather had temporarily frozen the river, some low-lying areas were still flooded.

The munitions warehouse was located in the inner ring of this level. To reach it, one had to pass through a tunnel constructed of metal mesh. The material of these metal meshes was somewhat similar to the protective nets along highways in the past, and they did have some protective capabilities. The tunnel usually passed through several production lines, and heavy-looking parts were often grabbed by robotic arms above the heads of several people.

They walked along the passage formed by the protective net for more than ten minutes before reaching the end of the passage. Then they saw a lot of uniformed soldiers waiting in a long line at the door of a certain department.

Most of these soldiers were young, and since this wasn't a formal place, it wasn't easy for them to keep quiet. Jiang Ling learned something from their conversation: this department was the first step in obtaining supplies. Here, you could use your letter of introduction or authority to state your needs, and the comrades in the department would allocate supplies accordingly. Of course, if your request was too outlandish, they wouldn't grant it, and you might even get scolded by your superiors for your stupidity.
