Chapter 24: Tranquility Five

Seeing the real owner coming, the man put the e-cigarette in his pocket and stood up.

"I'm the first mate of this submarine now. The captain and the boys are out hauling cargo. They'll probably be back in a few hours."

"Oh? What's your name?" Ning Weihe shook hands with him.

"Just call me Marvin. Do you want to go down and take a look first?"

"Forget it, there'll be plenty of time later!" Ning Weihe looked at Ma Wen and smiled, "I'm not going to leave the fresh air behind and go in and eat your exhaust."

"Oh, that won't take long. Our submersible uses compressed air, so each dive never exceeds ten nautical miles. Plus, with the air purification system, the smell inside is actually quite good. I often call it an underwater sports car. You'll know once you try it!"

"Have you ever seen a sports car transporting goods everywhere?" Jiang Ling asked in surprise.

"Apart from those that are called cars but cannot move, what other kind of cars can't carry goods?" he asked in return.

That's true.

A car is a car. Cars that cannot haul goods are usually too expensive, so people give them special names.

A moment later, the first mate saw that the person who was supposed to return had returned. He bent down and fiddled with the handle on the hatch, pulled open the pressure hatch, and slid down the vertical ladder at the entrance. He pressed a switch at the bottom, and the lights near the hatch immediately emitted a bright yellow light, illuminating the vertical light blue ladder.

Ning Weihe pulled Jiang Ling, signaling her to follow. The two of them climbed down the ladder, one in front and one behind, following the first mate's route.

The interior of the submarine was small and cramped, and the crew seemed unable to find a way to the cargo hold from the inside, as if the cargo hold was an additional addition to the submarine.

Just a few steps from the hatch to the front, you'll arrive at the crew lounge. There are only four beds in the lounges on both sides. In this place where every inch of land is valuable, these few beds must have been hard-earned.

Ten or so steps further, Jiang Ling's psychic sense revealed numerous thin, stacked devices behind a few millimeters of metal sheeting. Some resembled the batteries used in the rental trams at the station. The gaps between them were roughly half filled with liquid. If I was right, the submersible's energy and buoyancy came from this compartment. While this design was difficult to evaluate, in terms of practicality, it truly achieved three goals with one stone.

Next to the energy cabin is the equipment room, which mostly contains life cycle equipment. The kitchen and toilet are also here.

Further ahead were the all-important command room and control cabin. The command room was located below the control cabin, and the captain had even reserved a separate room inside. That room was equally difficult to evaluate. In Jiang Ling's opinion, it was perfectly suited for a vampire, ignoring the submersible's keel and hull beneath the bed.

The two of them walked around the submarine - actually, they just walked forty or fifty steps from the back to the front, and they had to pay attention to their heads from time to time to avoid damaging the fragile boat.

Twenty minutes later, Ning Weihe met the person he wanted to meet near the lounge.

The leader was a sturdy old man who was shorter than Jiang Ling. He shook Ning Weihe's outstretched right hand.

The only people present with him were the first mate, the hydroacoustic engineer, and the damage control officer. Currently, there were only four of them controlling the boat, and the rest of the work was entirely handed over to the onboard artificial intelligence.

After a brief greeting, the group headed towards the control cabin. As soon as they stepped through the hatch, they caught Jiang Ling standing next to a nautical chart, looking at it randomly.

"Who is she?" The captain grabbed Ning Weihe's shoulders.

"The helper I found is very strong. I suggest you get familiar with her as soon as possible." Ning Weiwei tilted his head and whispered about Jiang Ling's situation in the captain's ear.

"You said she is a human radar?" the captain asked in disbelief.

"No, I didn't!"

The captain, who got the answer, waved his hand to let everyone take their positions, and slowly approached Jiang Ling. He found that this woman looked very young and it was difficult to determine her age from her appearance.

"What are you looking at?" he asked calmly.

"It depends on the direction of the ocean current." Jiang Ling replied.

"Is there any problem?" The captain wanted to test her ability.

"I don't know, but it's completely different from the pre-war data. I remember the original flow was generally in a figure 8 shape, but now it's become a chaotic turbulence."

"You're right, but this chart isn't entirely correct either." The captain flipped the page of the chart and said seriously, "Now it's time to look at this one. These are all supercomputer simulations at the station and are for reference only."

"Oh? It's a little different. What's this separated piece here and here?"

The captain's expression changed slightly, and his tone softened slightly: "That was an iceberg that broke off from the equator last month. It smashed into a number of unmanned monitoring stations."

"So that's how it is!" Jiang Ling nodded, then looked up at the captain and then at Lao Ning, "When do we set off?"

"It will be ready soon!"

Jiang Ling noticed the newcomers early on. After passing the "security check", she knew that the people present were most likely the people needed for the subsequent mission.

The captain's name is Feng Zhiyuan. His experience on this small boat is even greater than that of the first mate. Once they arrive at the destination, he will most likely only be able to help out.

Captain Feng recalled that the Tranquility 5 wasn't a highly classified vessel. Originally a transport vessel used to shuttle between various underwater platforms, it normally served as a training vessel. Only last year, with construction largely complete, did it undergo a major renovation, potentially extending its service life.
