Chapter Three: Becoming His Mother

Everyone looked in the direction Meng Jinyao pointed, and when their eyes fell on Gu Jingxi, they all gasped.

Has Meng Jinyao gone mad?

Gu Jingxi was originally her future father-in-law, but now her future daughter-in-law is about to become her future daughter-in-law.

If Gu Jingxi and Gu Xiuming were of the same generation, there would be no problem. But Gu Jingxi is Gu Xiuming's father, an elder. How could an elder marry a wife who should belong to a younger generation?

This is unethical.

Gu Jingxi was a man who could remain calm even if Mount Tai collapsed in front of him, but when he heard his future daughter-in-law's shocking words, his expression instantly cracked, and he squinted at Meng Jinyao.

When Meng Jinyao met Gu Jingxi's indifferent gaze, her heart trembled. It would be a lie to say she wasn't nervous or afraid. But she couldn't choose between the two grandchildren of the Gu family, and Gu Jingxi was the best choice. She had no way out; returning to the Meng family wouldn't be any better than staying in the Gu family.

Gu Xiuming wronged her, making her a laughingstock on her wedding day. Since she couldn't be Gu Xiuming's bride, she would become Gu Xiuming's new mother and elder, and then deal with him later.

The only downside is that Gu Jingxi is not good enough. He was injured while saving the emperor and developed a hidden illness. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been unmarried at the age of twenty-nine and would have adopted a child from a collateral branch of the clan to carry on the family line.

But it doesn't matter if she can't, because a man who can't have sex won't take a bunch of concubines to annoy her.

The Gu family members looked at each other in disbelief, thinking that Meng Jinyao had gone mad. Even the old lady Gu, who had lived most of her life and seen many storms, was too shocked to speak. The guests were also whispering among themselves.

After a moment, Gu Jingxi frowned and said, "Miss Meng, do you know what you're saying?"

Meng Jinyao tried her best to remain calm and made her voice sound calm as she said slowly, "Lord Gu, as the saying goes, the son pays for the father's debts, and the son pays for the father's debts. You have failed to raise your son properly. He ran away from his wedding on the day of his wedding and eloped with another girl, making me a laughing stock. As his father, you have a responsibility to pay this debt for him."

At first glance, this statement seemed to make sense, and the guests were stunned. But upon closer examination, they felt that something was amiss.

Gu Jingxi apologized profusely, saying, "It is my fault for failing to raise my son properly. I apologize to Miss Meng for this. My two nephews are not yet married. Since they have stepped forward, it means they agree to marry Miss Meng. Miss Meng can choose between them."

Meng Jinyao replied, "I didn't like any of them, but I think Lord Gu is quite good. Lord Gu is not only talented, but also of excellent character. He will definitely be a responsible and good husband in the future." As she spoke, she turned to look at Old Madam Gu, "Old Madam, you just said that all the unmarried and unengaged young men in the Gu family are available for me to choose from. Now that I have chosen Lord Gu, I wonder if your words still stand?"

As she listened to her words, Madam Gu couldn't help but glance between her son and Meng Jinyao. They were a handsome couple, quite a good match.

She suddenly realized that it wouldn't be bad to take this opportunity to help her son get married. Her son's hidden illness and lack of marriage had been a source of worry for her. Now that he had a ready-made wife, he would have someone who cared for him and wouldn't be lonely in his old age.

Since the Gu family has already made such a fool of themselves, are they afraid that the joke will get even more outrageous?

So, Madam Gu pressed her advantage and replied to Meng Jinyao, "Miss Meng, what I just said certainly stands." She turned to look at her own son and continued, "Our Gu family has always been trustworthy and we are not the kind of people who break their promises."

Gu Jingxi tapped the table lightly with his fingers, his face revealing no emotion. He looked at Meng Jinyao again, stared at her for a long time, and asked in a low voice, "Miss Meng, have you thought this through?"

Meng Jinyao said firmly, "I've thought it through."

Upon hearing this, Gu Jingxi stood up, walked to her side, took the other end of the red silk, and said to the matchmaker, "Don't miss the auspicious time."
