Chapter 4 Chapter 4 Noodle Soup
When Olivia came out of the chicken coop, she was holding a warm egg in her hand and was about to go to the kitchen, leaving the rest for the hens to hatch.
At this moment, it was already noon, but the sky was covered with dark clouds. Snow continued to fall, piling up on the ground. Her wooden-soled shoes made a "crunching" sound as she stepped on the snow.
Looking up at the gentle hillside pasture behind the manor, it was an endless expanse of white, with only the silo standing there.
Lucy was carrying a rake and raking the grass outside the storage barn, preparing to let the cattle and sheep out to graze.
The steeper mountain forests in the distance were also crystal clear, with the tall coniferous trees all frozen into hoarfrost, like dreamy icicles.
It looks like a pure land in a fairy tale.
There are no electric wires, no colored steel tiles, and no hardened roads. The only sounds in your ears are the cries of cows and sheep, and it is the vast and simple nature.
After crossing the forest in front of you and walking down, you will see a wide river, and the river channel is the border line.
Walk along the riverside road for an hour and you will reach the town where the baron lives.
If she took a carriage, the journey time could be shortened by half. After the wedding, she took this route to enter the manor.
However, the weather these past two days is not suitable for going out to explore. Olivia is not in a hurry, as she is not a die-hard gamer.
After standing outside for a while, looking around, my ears were so cold that they hurt, so I could only tiptoe towards the kitchen of the longhouse.
There are not many servants in the manor. In the game setting, although the knight's wife is a small lord, she is not someone who can live a life of luxury and never have to do housework. She also has to cook and make handicrafts occasionally. It is normal for her to go to the chicken coop or the kitchen.
The longhouse was built of logs, and the roof was made of planks and thatch. From the outside, it looked like an ordinary coffin-box house with only an entrance similar to a barn door and narrow, lightless wooden windows.
But when you walk into the entrance, you will find a different world inside. What comes into view is a spacious and tidy kitchen with a high roof. There are wooden passages on the left and right sides of the kitchen, which lead to several separate rooms.
Olivia's target was only the kitchen, which was brightly lit by the fire pit in the middle.
The scattered fuel in the fire pit was emitting a steady stream of hot steam, and two heavy cast iron pots were hanging on the side, one of which seemed to contain pork bone soup.
There was a stone fence around the fire pit, and a clay pot with bean paste bubbling inside.
In addition to this place where white mist was rising, there was a stone fireplace against the wall, which was also burning sheep dung and cow dung blocks. There was a small kiln above the fireplace.
The middle-aged cook, Gracia, wearing a linen apron, stood by the fireplace, poking the fuel with tongs. She was preparing lunch for Olivia. A small pile of wheat flour was poured on the table next to her, and she seemed to be preparing to bake dry white bread again.
On the manor, the most common staple foods are rye and oats. Wheat can only be grown in the most fertile areas, and only a few barrels are produced each year, which is only enough for the owner to eat.
However, Olivia couldn't eat anymore and now her cheeks hurt when she saw bread.
She quickly told the cook not to bake anymore.
Graya turned around and asked in confusion, "What are we eating, Madam?"
Olivia put the eggs on the table, took off her coat and hung it on the wall. She waved her hand and said, "I'll make this meal myself. You go and cook your own food."
Graya thought that the lady had just eaten the food she cooked and was not used to the taste which was different from that at home, so she didn't say anything and went to fetch water from the well outside.
The cook is a person with rough skills but hardworking.
Olivia was like a headless fly in the kitchen. She found a large wooden bowl, poured wheat flour into it, scooped water from the jar to mix the dough, and fiddled in the kitchen for a long time. She cleaned the chopping board and found a rolling pin for rolling the pie.
She was going to make some noodle soup.
First she kneaded the dough, let it rest, and rolled it out. She couldn't roll it out too thin, so she had to cut it into smaller pieces with a knife.
Half an hour later, Olivia took out the butter pot from the small pot by the fireplace. The creamy yellow fat slid and melted in the pot, turning into liquid oil. She beat in the eggs and fried them with a crackling sound.
When the eggs were cooked, she poured water into the pot. She raised a spoon to smell the pork bone soup and found that there was no fishy smell, so she added a few spoonfuls of water.
With the mixture of eggs, butter and bone broth, the noodle soup has turned into an attractive milky white color. Then, coarse salt and chopped herbs dried on the estate are sprinkled in. Olivia shakes the noodles and throws them in to cook.
At least she had some skills that she had developed from bringing lunch to the company every day before she traveled through time, so this wasn't too bad.
After the noodle soup boiled twice, she found a thin ceramic soup bowl, scooped out the noodles and fried eggs from the pot, and scooped out the soup along with them.
When Graya returned to the kitchen after fetching the last load of water, she could see her wife sitting at the servants' dining table, roasting sheep dung over a fire, drinking soup with a ceramic bowl and fork, and slurping something into her mouth.
She looked as refreshed as if a long drought had finally brought a downpour. However, Graya's nose had already smelled the scent of fried eggs with butter, and she asked the lady curiously what she had cooked.
Olivia picked up the noodles and showed them to Gloria, who then understood.
It looks like pie dough cut into shreds and cooked into soup. Anyone who knows how to cook will know how to make this food at a glance.
Since Graya asked, Olivia repeated the recipe in detail and asked her to make soup noodles for them in the evening.
After finishing a bowl of noodles, Olivia was sweating all over, feeling warm and full. She hadn't felt so satisfied with her meal for several days.
However, when she returned to the main house from the kitchen, she started to feel dizzy from eating so much that she had to climb upstairs to take a nap.
In the bedroom, the wooden beds these days are not very big, and are tightly surrounded by linen curtains. When the curtains are drawn, most of the light is blocked, which makes it comfortable and helps with sleep.
She just took a short nap and got up by herself after a while. At this time, she put on her clothes and opened the window to see that the snow outside had stopped. It was not too late, about one or two o'clock.
She has now developed the skill of knowing what time it is just by looking up at the sky.
Although she doesn't have to punch in for work here and can get close to nature at any time, there is not much entertainment. Apart from waiting for the task to be carried out, she can only find things to do for herself.
Olivia had planned yesterday to sew herself a thicker petticoat with long johns.
So she took out several stacks of blended fabrics that were thicker and finer than linen from the box and spread them on the small dining table by the window. She also found a sewing box and scissors, made some marks, and started working bit by bit.
Whatever she wore now was brought from the Renault estate in the next village, and it was still the old style.
Today, when she was outside in the chicken coop, her legs were frozen. She didn't know if her two younger sisters at home could stand it, even though she had only met them once at a wedding in the small town.
One of them is called Lanie and the other is called Sansa. The older Lanie is two years younger than Olivia, and Sansa is two years younger than her.
Of course, this was also the family setting she had drawn out in the game before traveling through time.
The three sisters raised by her parents are the three most famous and beautiful girls with clever hands among the dozens of knight families in the Barony of Bergru.
However, Olivia felt that her actual situation was very OOC and did not fit any description of the word "dexterous" at all.
She worked behind the table for two or three hours, and by the time it was dark, she had barely managed to get the pieces of cloth into the shape of pants. Most of the time, she was spent removing pieces of cloth that had been sewn in the wrong order.
The final important finishing work was barely completed after Lucy was called in to help.
"Ma'am, who are these pants made for?"
Lucy put away her needle and thread and scissors, scratching her head as she looked at the weird pair of long johns in front of her, with pockets and a drawstring waistband. These were obviously the type men wore nowadays, but judging by the length of the trouser legs, it was obvious that they were not made for the male owner. But the lady didn't have a younger brother.
"Silly Lucy, this is for me to wear."
Olivia tried the dress on herself. The length was just right, the pockets were spacious, and she no longer had to worry about moving around too much while wearing the skirt.
"ah?"
Lucy quickly put away her surprised expression. As a servant, she couldn't question her master's words.
Olivia couldn't wait to put on her long johns under her skirt, went downstairs and out of the main house, and took a few steps in the orchard in the front yard.
This is much warmer than wearing only a petticoat and socks under a skirt.
She walked around for a while and suddenly heard the sound of horse hooves. She knew that Caesar and his men had returned.
Looking into the distance, you can see groups of people walking in the snow outside the low wall of the manor.
The foot soldiers trotted behind in columns, while the retinue and Caesar rode in front.
After entering the manor, Caesar saw her from afar, stopped near the orchard, got off the horse, and handed it to his attendants to take care of.
"It ended so early today? Lord Baron Bergru didn't invite you to dinner?"
"Lord Forrus was also there, so we didn't stay long."
Caesar took off his helmet, revealing his short light blond hair, emerald eyes, and gorgeous, deep facial features. He looked at her with a smile on his face.
Even after three or four days, Olivia is still shocked by the superb skills of her face-shaping.
She reached out to take the helmet, which was so heavy that it almost hit her foot, and then she gave it back to Caesar.
"No wonder."
The two walked into the main house one after the other. After entering the main house, Olivia lent a hand and helped Caesar take off his breastplate and hung it on the rack. Caesar changed into a thick outer robe with a double-breasted collar.
The room was dark because the oil lamp had been lit. Lucy was busy arranging food in the dining room next door and came over to ask if they wanted some wine.
Olivia nodded to Lucy, then turned to Caesar and said:
"Lord Forrus still wants to start a war?
But even if we take the entire river valley, what can be grown on such a barren land? How many cattle and sheep can we support?"
They don't have crops like potatoes and sweet potatoes.
