Chapter 48: The War of Grandchildren

On the day of Great Cold, all primary and secondary schools are closed.

Zhaozhao took Panpan and Baoer to dig reed roots by the river. The three of them wore small cotton-padded jackets of the same color. Their little hands were frozen red, but they did not stop.

It's so boring!

Chengru and Chengjie stretched out their little feet at the river bank, eager to try their luck on the ice. Fu Chengcai followed his brother like a little tail.

"Don't go down!" Zhao Zhao stopped him loudly, "Or I'll tell grandpa and grandma!"

Fu Chengru curled his lips. His parents had gone to the dam and no one took care of them. Recently, they had been living with their grandparents, and so had Chengcai from his third uncle's family.

What the two brothers didn’t know was that Fu Tianyun and his wife and Fu Tiancheng knelt in front of their parents for a long time before they agreed to take care of the child for a while.

Jiang Fengxia didn't want to involve her children in the grievances of the previous generation. These three grandsons were a little naughty and sometimes ignorant, but they were still young after all, and many things had nothing to do with them.

Last time, Zhao Zhao was almost sold out by Li Ying. I heard that Cheng Ru and Cheng Jie later apologized to Zhao Zhao, so the matter was over.

Fu Baoer was behind the door at the time and heard the confession of her stepfather and the others. Although she didn't feel much, she knew that her grandparents would definitely soften their hearts and agree.

Putting everything aside, Fu Manshan and Jiang Fengxia are kind people and they cannot bear to see their three children left unattended.

Therefore, the brothers and sisters have been playing together recently and there are no conflicts.

Fu Baoer glanced at the ice. In fact, she also wanted to go down. Ice skating must be fun.

"No! You'll freeze to death if you fall into the ice hole." Zhao Zhao saw through her sister's thoughts and pinched her face, warning, "Dig reed roots. If you dig up earthworms, our Xiao Huang will have food to eat."

Xiao Huang is a chicken raised in the backyard.

"Okay." Fubaoer pouted her lips. When she grows up a little, she will go swimming in the river. She misses the feeling of being in the water so much.

"Little sister, let's go catch sparrows," Cheng Jie came over. He actually liked this little sister very much. She was fair and clean, unlike other children. "Catch them and roast them. They're delicious!"

Catching sparrows? Sounds like it would be more fun than digging reed roots.

"Let's go! Brother catch sparrows!"

Fu Chengru held down Fu Baoer who was about to run away: "Wait a minute, sister Baoer, you need food to catch sparrows! You can't catch them if you just go there!"

"Then what should we do? Where can we find food?" Zhao Zhao put all the reed roots he had dug into a small basket and took Pan Pan's hand. "Can we use reed roots?"

"No, birds won't eat this!" Fu Chengjie was dejected. He didn't dare to steal food from his grandmother, and he couldn't even enter his own house.

Fu Baoer thought this was no small matter, so she pretended to dig in her pocket and actually took out a handful of corn from the cave. "Brother, here!"

Fu Chengjie jumped up with a cry: "Little sister, why are you still carrying corn with you!"

"My grandma gave it to me!" Fu Baoer lied with his eyes open.

"Come on, let me ask grandma for a winnowing basket," Zhao Zhao also became excited. "Chengru, go find a rope, and Chengjie, find a stick."

"Sister, what about me?" Fu Chengcai was afraid of being left behind.

Fu Chengjie pulled Chengcai up and said, "Come with me to find a stick!"

Several people quickly installed a simple sparrow catching device. They placed a wooden stick about 15 cm long under the dustpan, tied a rope to the bottom of the stick, and pulled it two meters away.

In the haystack not far away, Zhaozhao covered Panpan's mouth, Chengru covered Chengcai's mouth, and our Baoer clearly stated that it was not necessary and she would not make any noise.

Fu Chengcai held the rope nervously, waiting patiently for the sparrow to arrive.

It is winter now, and there is not much grain on the threshing floor. Occasionally a few sparrows appear, but they do not come near the winnowing basket.

Fubaoer pulled aside some hay and saw through the gap that one or two sparrows flew over, stayed for a few seconds and then flew away. They didn't seem very interested in the corn.

"Why are you still..."

"Shh!" Fu Baoer put her little finger to her mouth, signaling Fu Chengjie not to speak.

Just then, a sparrow flew over and hopped a few times towards the trap they had set. It shook its head left and right, and its gray-brown feathers were dotted with white spots. The little guy with a round head and a round brain finally couldn't resist the temptation of the corn and planned to go in to find out what was going on.

Fu Chengjie's hands, which were holding the rope, began to sweat.

Fu Baoer held up three fingers and silently shouted to his brother: "3, 2, 1!"

Just as Fu Chengjie was about to pull down the rope and grab the unfortunate little sparrow, a clear shout suddenly came from the road beside the threshing ground: "Hey! What are you doing!"

The little sparrow was startled and quickly stood up to fly away. Fu Chengjie's already nervous nerves were disturbed by others, and his hand was one step too late. He watched helplessly as the bird successfully took off in the extreme gap.

Fu Baoer said it was a pity.

"Ahhh! Who is it! We'll catch you soon!" Fu Chengjie shouted and jumped out of the haystack, looking towards the road.

The others were also a little disappointed and climbed out one after another, intending to see who had ruined their plans.

Fu Yuanbei was standing on the street, with two pigtails tied up and a pink bow tied at the roots of her hair. She was wearing a dark red corduroy cotton jacket, black pants, and a pair of khaki plaid cotton shoes. She looked clean and neat.

Fu Yuanyou carried a military green schoolbag across his shoulder, wore a military uniform of the same color, and a military cap. At the age of 10, he already looked like a big kid.

Fu Tiancheng was pushing his bicycle, impatiently urging them to hurry up.
