Lin Man in the Apocalypse

For seventeen years in the apocalypse, the fields yielded no crops. Lin Man and her mother struggled daily on the brink of starvation and thirst, until one day, she obtained a space.

Chapter 6

Lin Man had only eaten sweet potatoes, but seeing the generous portion, she ordered the bowl of purple sweet potato cake without hesitation.

Then she set her eyes on another kind of cake. It looked a little gray, like a multi-grain cake. The surface was a little brown, and it exuded the mellow aroma of cereals. It was more than ten centimeters in diameter, round, and about one finger thick. There were two pieces in a plate.

Lin Man also weighed it. It was not as heavy as the purple sweet potato cake, but it was very hard and compact. It must contain much less water, so it should be more filling.

Lin Man was secretly delighted: "I want both of these."

"Okay, go out."

"Well, do you think my current method of treating the soil is okay?"

"It's barely okay, but I must remind you that today is the third day."

"The third day... isn't today the second day?" Lin Man suddenly understood. Today was her third time getting food. So, did it start counting from the day she got the steamed buns and chicken legs? Did the first two hours before midnight also count as a day?

Lin Man felt extremely sad that he had lost a day for no reason. He did not bother to say anything else and quickly left the space.

Mother Lin was pleasantly surprised to see the purple sweet potato cakes and multi-grain cakes: "This portion is much larger than the previous two times."

"Yeah, I think so too."

Whether it's steamed buns and chicken legs, or rice and eggs, they are all only enough for one person to eat until he is 60% to 70% full. But this time it's different. It's enough for one person to eat two meals and still feel quite full.

Lin Man wondered if that space saw that they were not full, so they gave them more?

Thinking about it this way, she could accept losing a day. This was truly a wonderful space, and she would definitely work harder to make better soil for it.

Lin Man and his mother shared a piece of purple sweet potato cake. It was soft, sticky, fragrant, sweet and a little sticky. In short, it was delicious and very filling.

The remaining piece was put into the lunch box, and the two pieces of cake were put directly into the bag, and then the mother and daughter started to work!

At the end of the day, the two of them worked together to process all the soil.

At night, Lin Man continued to dig the soil. She couldn't hold on that night and slept for a few hours. She only dug more than fifty baskets that night. During the day, the mother and daughter continued to process the soil.

The good news is that after three days of exposure to the sun, the first batch of soil was finally judged by the space to have a barely acceptable sterilization level and was stored in the space.

Lin Man was about to shovel the dirt into the basket, then held it with his hands. The basket disappeared, then reappeared a moment later, and the dirt inside was taken away. To prevent the loose, fine-grained soil from being lost, Mother Lin even took apart two pieces of clothing and placed them in the basket.

It took half an hour to collect the first batch of soil. A cold and serious voice rang out in Lin Man's mind: "8.3 cubic meters of soil have been collected. There are 91.7 cubic meters left. Please keep working hard."

Lin Man was so excited that he hugged his mother tightly.

This was already the fourth day of ten days.

On the fifth day, the second batch of soil was put into the space, and the final total was 23.1 cubic meters.

Day 6, third batch, 17.8 cubic meters.

Day seven, 19 cubic meters.

Day 8, 17.1 cubic meters.

After collecting the last basket of soil and hearing the reminder from the space, Lin Man happily said to his mother, "Mom, there are only 14.7 cubic meters left!"

Mother Lin touched her face, which was tanned like a candy cake. Under the setting sun, her face was even darker and redder, with many small cracks and chapped lips. "No digging tonight, right?"

"Well, let's not dig anymore." Even if we dig today, dry it in the sun for a day tomorrow and a day the day after tomorrow, it still won't meet the sterilization standards. Besides, the soil that has been dug on the slope is enough to produce two 14.7 tons of soil, which is enough.

"Mom, we are almost successful!" Lin Man put his hands together and said: "Please pray that it doesn't rain tomorrow, pray that it doesn't rain tomorrow." If it doesn't rain tomorrow, by this time tomorrow, the remaining vacancies will basically be filled and the task will be completed one day early!

"Then let's go back and rest. You haven't had a good rest in a few days."

Lin Man looked at the slope. She would definitely stay here tomorrow. It would be good to go back and rest at night. "Okay!"

She carried Mother Lin home on her back, passing a few people along the way, some in a hurry or half-conscious. No one paid them any attention, and even the Wu family next door wasn't home. Lin Man fell into a deep sleep as soon as she reached the bed. She was so exhausted she didn't want to move a finger.

"Woo..." In the middle of the night, Mother Lin was awakened by a low groaning sound. She reached out and touched her daughter's forehead, which was burning hot.

She hurriedly got up: "Xiao Man, Xiao Man."

In the darkness of the night, everything was pitch black in front of her. She groped to get out of bed to light a fire, but her legs were not convenient and she fell down.

The huge noise woke Lin Man up. She felt her body was heavy and hot. Every breath she took was filled with scorching air. Her throat and mouth were so dry that they felt like they were burning, and her head was dizzy as if it was filled with water.

Without having time to think about what was wrong with her, she struggled to half-drag and half-carry Mother Lin from the ground back to the bed.

"Xiao Man, what do you think?"

Lin Man leaned on the bed and panted: "Mom, I think I have a fever."

She hadn't been sick for several years. Her body was not strong, but she was able to withstand blows and falls. This time she was probably really tired. She had been doing heavy physical work for several days in a row and only slept two or three hours a day. Even though she ate the best food she had ever eaten, she couldn't hold on any longer.

Lin Man closed his eyes and felt his eyelids were burning.

"Hurry up and boil some water to drink, and wet a towel to wipe your body to cool down." Mother Lin said hurriedly.

Lin Man hesitated for a moment, then did what he was told. He had just taken two steps while holding onto the table when he suddenly realized, "Mom, we're out of water."

The mother and daughter used the half bucket of water that Lin Man fetched that day for six days. This was because they didn't use it to wash anything, but just cooked and drank it. The food they took out from the space could at least replenish some water.

Lin Manman's mind was full of dirt, so he just wanted to finish this task before doing anything else. He would quickly sleep to replenish his energy when he had some free time, and he just couldn't squeeze out time to fetch water. When he came back yesterday, he had just finished his last sip of water. Lin Manman was too tired and thought he would go fetch water after waking up, so there was not a drop of water left in the house.

Mother Lin also thought of this: "What should I do?" They didn't let him get water in the middle of the night, and Lin Man couldn't get water in his current condition.

She pinched her legs in hatred because she couldn't lift them.

"I'll see if I can borrow some from Grandma Wu." Lin Man opened the door, and the night breeze blew on her face, making her feel a little more comfortable.

She leaned against the wall and knocked on the door next door: "Grandma Wu."

After a while, a hoarse and weak voice came from inside: "Who is it? Xiaoman?"

"It's me, Grandma Wu. Can I borrow some water? Just a little."

There was some movement coming from inside again.

Lin Man leaned against the door panel and listened to the noises very clearly. Grandma Wu's rough palms slid across the mattress, she got out of bed, walked barefoot on the ground, groped her way out along the table, then came behind the door and lay down to listen.

Lin Man could even hear her weak breathing.

"Grandma Wu, it's me, Xiaoman." She repeated. The door opened, revealing Grandma Wu's wrinkled face. "Xiaoman, what's going on?"

Lin Man said, "Grandma Wu, do you have any water left? Lend me some. I'll return double the amount tomorrow."

"Hey, hey..." Grandma Wu looked a little reluctant, but still opened the door a little wider, "Just a little more, come in."

Two more people sat up on the bed in the room. They were the two children of the Wu family. Grandma Wu said, "You guys continue to sleep." She fished out a plastic kettle from a wooden box and said, "Everything is here. The well was drained by a group of people the night before last. From now on..."

I'm afraid there will be no water in the future.

Lin Man stared at the kettle. It was a 5-liter kettle, and it looked like it was less than half full. He was stunned when he heard this: "Empty?"

"Yes, a bunch of heartless people are leaving. They're afraid there won't be enough water, so they've drained all three wells. What are we going to do in the future?" Grandma Wu sat down listlessly, seeming to have given up hope. She asked in a trembling voice, "Xiaoman, what do you think will happen to us in the future?"

Lin Man was silent for a moment, then said, "Grandma Wu, you can keep this water for yourselves."

"It's okay, just pour some. It's not enough for other people anyway."

Lin Man still didn't want the water. He went back home and told his mother about it.

"These people are going to kill us." Mother Lin was furious and panicked. "What should we do now?"

Lin Man licked her cracked lips and pressed her head, which was getting more and more painful and hot. If she didn't drink some water, she felt like her whole body was going to burn.

"Mom, I want to change the water." She didn't say it clearly, but Mother Lin understood what she meant. She wanted to get water from the space.

There is also water in the space, but if you take a bottle of water, you have to take one less food. Lin Man is reluctant, but now she can't hold on any longer.

"Okay." Mother Lin shook her hand, which was surprisingly hot. "If one bottle isn't enough, then two. We can go hungry for a day."

Lin Man fell on the bed and entered the space.

She lay down on the table.

Her consciousness entered while her body was still outside, but her consciousness was also groggy and she felt very uncomfortable.

"Space, I want water." she said.

Two 500ml bottles of mineral water immediately appeared in front of her. Lin Man's eyes turned green and she reached out to grab them.

A voice suddenly came from somewhere, saying, "Water can't help you. Drinking more water will only quench your thirst, but it won't heal the burning sensation inside your body."

Lin Man was stunned: "What do you mean? What should we do?"

"Unless you make it through it yourself and awaken your superpowers."

Lin Man opened his mouth wide: "Superpower?!"

The voice said, "Yes, you have a fever because you are too tired, your body is too weak, and because you are about to awaken your supernatural powers."
