Chapter Eighty-Eight: Bloodbath of Nightmare
Song Huai wasn't there, and Song Ji-hyo was so excited to see me that she dragged me to get coffee.
“Chu Zhen is keeping a close eye on you now, and I don’t dare to ask you out on my own. I finally caught you today. Do you know about her new red velvet cake? They say it’s really delicious, but it’s a bit big for one person.” As soon as we got to the store, Song Ji-hyo ordered desserts and coffee, and ordered me a cup of hot milk.
"You've been planning this for a long time, haven't you?"
"Hehe, you know what a foodie's heart is like. It's not easy for me to suppress it now." Song Ji-hyo scooped up some cake, and I was a little tempted too. I took a spoonful, and it was indeed smooth in my mouth, not too sweet at all, and had the sweet aroma of strawberries.
"That's pretty good. You should have told me about this kind of good stuff a long time ago."
And so, Song Ji-hyo and I each ate a six-inch cake.
"Ah, I still have a better appetite when I eat with you." Song Ji-hyo's stomach is almost as big as mine.
"I see you haven't been under any pressure to go on blind dates lately, which is why you can eat desserts so freely."
"Of course, the biggest problem in my family right now isn't me, it's Song Huai, haha, this brother isn't married yet, what do I have to worry about?"
"By the way, what has Song Huai been busy with lately? I haven't seen him on TV recently."
"Didn't you know you went out with your Mr. Chu?" Song Ji-hyo put down her coffee, looked at me, and her eyes were full of questions.
"Chu Zhen?"
"Yes, it should be related to your car accident. That time I passed by my brother's study and heard him talking to Chu Dashen on the phone. They were talking about eyewitnesses or something, but when they saw me, they didn't say much. Could it be that Chu Zhen was also keeping it from you?"
"No, I know Chu Zhen is investigating the car accident, but he's been coming and going in a hurry every day lately, and I'm a little uneasy. When he's with Song Huai, it's alright, I can feel a little more at ease."
"Don't worry, Godfather Chu is very methodical. Just take good care of the baby in your belly. Godmother has already prepared a gift for our first meeting." Song Ji-hyo patted my belly.
"You're not getting a godmother yet. Huang Yanyan beat you to it. She already gave her a gift."
"What? Why didn't you tell me about something this big? Tell me, how much did Huang Yanyan give? I'll pay double."
“My family isn’t greedy, right?” I said, touching my belly. “But this period is definitely coming, so a gift is a must.”
It's strange, but since I got pregnant, I've never been picky about food. But ever since I ate red velvet cake with Song Ji-hyo, I've become obsessed with it. I have to eat it every few days, and recently I've been craving that taste every day. Chu Zhen was very happy to see that I finally had something I wanted to eat, so she went to the store and got me a diamond card. They deliver one to my office every day. Luckily, my blood sugar hasn't gone up during pregnancy.
Chu Zhen seems less busy than before. He's in the office almost every day, and he just sits there watching me and grinning like an idiot whenever I eat cake.
Recently, I've been feeling a bit heavy in my lower abdomen, and my complexion has been getting worse. I thought I might really be pregnant with a boy, so I didn't take it too seriously.
God really does play jokes on me; perhaps my life has been too smooth.
In the early morning, six months and ten days into my pregnancy, I experienced excruciating abdominal pain, a pain so intense it was almost unbearable. Chu Zhen was out conducting an interview, and I didn't even have the strength to make a phone call. After a sharp pain, I felt liquid flowing from my lower body—blood, incredibly bright red blood, staining the silver-gray sheets, instantly turning brown. The blood wouldn't stop, spreading wildly across the sheets.
I used all my strength to call Chu Zhen, but no one answered for a long time. In despair, I slowly lost consciousness.
"Lin Dang, Lin Dang, wake up!"
I was being shaken violently. I forced my eyes open and saw Chu Zhen's anxious face.
"My child, my child~" I cried out in a broken voice.
I was too weak to open my eyes, but my consciousness was clear. I felt Chu Zhen's tears, I felt Chu Zhen running wildly, the sirens blaring all the way, until finally lying on the operating table, the glaring operating lights made me open my eyes.
"Is the baby gone?" I asked weakly, looking at the cold surgical instruments around me and the doctors surrounding me.
"Don't feel guilty, I'm going to give you anesthesia, it'll be quick, don't worry." The doctor didn't answer my question. I knew that Chu Yilin and I were destined to be apart. I closed my eyes in despair and slowly lost consciousness.
It felt like I was having a long dream, but not a pleasant one. In the dream, there were two children, Chu Lin and Chu Yi Lin. They were running together on a lush green sports field. When they got tired, they would come to me and kiss me. But suddenly, they fell into a pool of blood. The green grass was covered in blood, bright red blood, so glaring in the sunlight. I cried my heart out, but no sound came out. I called out for Chu Zhen, but he wasn't there. I helplessly watched their figures slowly blur in the pool of blood...
"Did you dream about something? Chu Zhen, call her name, wake her up quickly." In my drowsy state, I heard my grandmother's voice.
"Let her sleep for a while. I don't want her to face reality too soon." Chu Zhen's voice was low, weathered, and hoarse.
I admit, I'm awake and my consciousness has returned, but I don't know how to face the face I'll see when I open my eyes.
"Zhen'er, go back and change your clothes. Lin Dang is out of danger now, so let the child sleep a little longer," came Grandma's voice.
"Go back, we're here. Don't worry, Lin Dang probably won't want to see you like this when she wakes up," Professor Huang said.
There were no other voices, and I didn't know what time it was. After a while, I heard the door close, followed by two sighs.
"Poor child, suffering because of us," Grandma said with regret.
"Mom, don't say that. Lin Dang is a very strong girl. She got through it when Chu Lin left, didn't she? They're still young, they have plenty of opportunities," Professor Huang comforted his grandmother.
"It's all my damned son's fault! How could I have given birth to such a thing?" Grandma's voice was choked with sobs.
"Mom, don't worry, don't hurt yourself. Lin Dang certainly doesn't want anything to go wrong with you. She's a sensible and considerate child. Just keep a good mood, and leave the rest to us."
The "thousand-hearted killer" that Grandma mentioned should be Chu Zhen's father, but how could my miscarriage be related to his father?
Someone held my hand; it was a very soft hand.
"Fortunately, this child isn't married to Chu Zhen. Once she wakes up, let's just make them break up. Last time there was a car accident, this time a miscarriage, who knows what else might happen to her in the future. She's such a good girl, we can't let her be held back by our family." Professor Huang's voice made me unable to keep up the act. Break up with Chu Zhen? This would take away half my life, and the other half of Chu Lin and Chu Yilin's lives. I couldn't help but let the tears stream down my cheeks.
