Lucky Carp Fukubao: Leading Her Whole Family to Prosperity

Wang family, at the west end of the village, lost an unlucky little girl. Xu family, at the east end of the village, picked up a girl named Fuman'er.

Everyone in the village said, "Th...

Chapter 6 Fu Man'er Cries from Fear

"Waaah," in the corner of the yard, Fu Man'er sat on a small stone, her neck stiff as she sobbed softly.

Tears streamed down her little face, but her eyes remained fixed straight ahead.

Holding a wooden stick, Liu Fang was still feeling terrified. If her son hadn't been quick enough to grab Fu Man'er's foot, the girl would have fallen into the water.

Regardless of how deep the well is, if someone falls into the water in this weather, they'll catch a cold. The little girl is so frail, how could she withstand that?

She only realized how light the baby was when she took Fu Man'er from her son; the baby was skin and bones, and it felt uncomfortable to hold.

"Fu Man'er, did you make a mistake?" Liu Fang picked up a stick and tapped it on the ground, glaring at the child on the ground.

This is no small matter. The children need to be frightened so they won't play near the well again. Liu Fang doesn't often discipline the children, but when it comes to their safety, she must teach them a lesson.

The stick looked familiar to Fu Man'er. The sound of the stick hitting the ground made Fu Man'er shudder. She remembered that she had been beaten with this kind of stick yesterday.

"Waaaaah!" A loud cry rang out in the Xu family's courtyard. Before Liu Fang could react, the little girl had already run towards Xu Yi.

Large tears streamed down her face as she ran, hiding behind Xu Yi, too afraid to come out, clutching his clothes tightly.

The sudden scene left Xu Yi stunned. The little girl behind him was close to him, as if only he could protect her.

Xu Fang was left standing there bewildered in the wind. She didn't really mean to hit anyone. No matter how much she loved her child, it wasn't her own. She just wanted to scare Fu Man'er.

To everyone's surprise, Fu Man'er reacted so strongly, her wailing and crying made passersby think that one of the Xu family's sons had been beaten up.

Fu Man'er cried so hard that she was still breathless even after Xu Yi pulled her to his side.

She was in so much pain. She had finally found her original body, but she died within two days.

Now that I've finally managed to absorb a couple of breaths of spiritual energy, I'm going to die again.

In this little girl's mind, being hit with a stick can kill her. Waaah, she still wants to eat; she doesn't want to die.

"No, don't cry." Xu Yi didn't mind that her face was dirty. He used his sleeve to wipe away her tears. There were still teardrops hanging on her long eyelashes, which was really heartbreaking to see.

He didn't know how to coax children. His three younger brothers didn't need to be coaxed either; a couple of shouts would shut them up. But with Fu Man'er, he simply couldn't bring himself to shout.

Liu Fang had already thrown the stick aside, and came over with a wet handkerchief to wipe Fu Man'er's face.

Fu Man'er looked at her warily, and only when she saw that she didn't have a stick in her hand did she raise her little face.

"Man'er," Liu Fang said earnestly while wiping her face, "it's dangerous by the well. You must never go to the well again. What if you fall in?"

Fu Man'er was about to say that it wasn't dangerous, but when she looked up, she saw the serious expressions on the faces of the Xu family mother and son, so she had to give up.

"Okay, danger, danger," the little boy nodded heavily, seemingly having truly taken Liu Fang's words to heart. "Mom, I understand."

Hearing this, Liu Fang grinned and said, "Man'er, I'm not your mother. Call me auntie."

It sounds comforting; kids may not understand, but adults can't be ignorant.

"That's what Yi'er always calls him," Fu Man'er said, puzzled. She had just learned it from him.

This little fool, Xu Yi simply couldn't bear to look at her. "That's my mother, not your mother. Also, don't call me Yi'er." Only the adults in the family call her that, what's with this little girl calling me that?

Fu Man'er seemed to understand but not quite; weren't they all mothers?

However, Liu Fang wiped her face very comfortably, with gentle strokes, and soon Fu Man'er's true appearance was revealed.

"This little baby is quite pretty." When I first saw her, Fu Man'er was all dirty, but now that she's washed her face, her big eyes are blinking and her nose is small. There aren't many girls in the village who are as pretty as her.

Her face looks a bit sallow, probably because she doesn't eat enough.

Liu Fang found a strip of cloth and tied up her messy hair. Fu Man'er stood obediently in front of her, letting Liu Fang do as she pleased.

Xu Yi was stunned when he saw Fu Man'er's face. He thought he had picked up a little beggar, but he didn't expect her to be a pretty little girl.

"Alright, go play with your brother." Liu Fang looked at the little girl with great satisfaction. If she didn't have so many things to do, she would have liked to give the little girl a good tidying up.

Fu Man'er didn't know what to play yet, but she was very curious and looked at Xu Yi with anticipation.

Xu Yi stayed behind to help instead of going out with his brothers. Fu Man'er stared at him with her round eyes, waiting for Xu Yi to take her out.

"Yi'er, go play. I'll go out after I finish washing the dishes." Liu Fang knew what her son was thinking, so she patted his shoulder and sent him out to play.

The children in the village who were the same age as Xu Yi, or even a little older, had long since gone off to play. Since Xu Genshan's accident, Xu Yi has become much more sensible and is no longer as playful as before.

They're still just kids, go play! After watching the two of them leave, Liu Fang finally closed the courtyard gate.

We need to hurry, as we still need to find out what my mother-in-law asked us to do later.

"Yi~" Fu Man'er had just opened her mouth when Xu Yi glared at her. She quickly covered her mouth. The two of them had agreed before leaving that she couldn't call him Yi'er anymore.

"Brother, where are we going?" They were going out to play, and there were many children playing on the road ahead. Fu Man'er wanted to go and see, but the road Xu Yi was leading them to wasn't going that way.

"Let's go to the back mountain." Xu Yi said this and started walking forward. Fu Man'er's short legs couldn't keep up, so she had to jog.

As she ran, she asked, "Why are we going to the back mountain?" She wasn't very happy; there were no children in the back mountain, so how would they play?

Xu Yi ignored her, lost in his own thoughts. He even carried a small bamboo basket with him when he went out, hoping to find some wild vegetables and fruits in the back mountain.

He didn't even dare to think about pheasants or rabbits; he didn't have the ability yet, and he didn't dare to go too far in right now.

The two quickly reached the back of the mountain. There were some wild vegetables scattered on both sides of the path. Xu Yi put the bamboo basket on the ground and started to work.

As soon as they entered the mountains, Fu Man'er's nose twitched involuntarily. It smelled so good, so fragrant and invigorating.

Smelling the fragrant aroma, Fu Man'er unconsciously took her short legs and walked inside. Xu Yi had just picked a few wild vegetables when he turned around and saw that she was gone. When he looked up again, he saw the little girl looking as if she were bewitched.

"Fu Man'er, what are you doing?"
