Chapter 142 The Little Prodigy

"What's wrong, Captain?"

Tian Fang stopped and looked at Song Guangming.

"You'll be in a group with Zhou Jingjing and the others today," Song Guangming said, pointing towards Zhou Jingjing and Ye Wei.

Tian Fang's smile froze for a moment, then a huge sense of disappointment crept into her heart. She tried her best to keep her tone steady, "Why, why?"

“There’s no why,” Song Guangming said sternly, glaring at him. “Just go when I tell you to. Yesterday, I asked you to cover for Liu Mancang when he went to the toilet. I’m tired of having two people on their side.”

Tian Fang pursed her lips.

I almost blurted out, "Why don't I team up with Xie Zhuo and he team up with someone else?"

But you absolutely must not say that.

She glanced again at Xie Zhuo and Liu Mancang's location.

"Hurry up and go," Song Guangming said impatiently. "You're dawdling. Those who came early have already filled a bag."

Tian Fang was restless all morning.

Xie Zhuo and Liu Mancang were not affected at all. Liu Mancang was still talking non-stop, starting from when he lay down at night and fantasized about getting married, and continuing until he dreamed that he was chased by wild dogs for two miles.

“My back ached when I woke up this morning,” Liu Mancang said. “Maybe it was because I was chased by a dog.”

Xie Zhuo threw a cut sunflower head into the bag.

"Hey, Third Brother," Liu Mancang took a step forward, "Does your arm hurt? Let me cut it for a bit?"

Xie Zhuo didn't stand on ceremony with him, made a couple more cuts, and handed the sickle to Liu Mancang.

Although Liu Mancang is talkative, he is also efficient at his work. He can't compare to Xie Zhuo, but compared to other men in the village, he is considered fast.

Basically, one cut per person.

Xu Yan got up quite early this morning. While Xie Zhuo was busy preparing breakfast in the kitchen, she went to help him. Then Xie Zhuo pinched her chin and kissed her before letting her prepare the bowls and chopsticks for breakfast.

Da Bao and Xiao Bao always get up very early. After eating breakfast, they start writing and reciting their lessons. However, Xu Yan didn't let them write for long this morning and took them out together.

"Third Aunt, where are we going?" Da Bao asked, holding Xu Yan's hand.

“Let’s go to town,” Xu Yan said, then looked down at the two little ones, “Has Da Bao and Xiao Bao ever been to town?”

“I’ve been there,” Xiao Bao said.

“I’ve never been there,” Da Bao said.

Xu Yan was amused by their unanimous yet completely contradictory statements, "Have you been there or not?"

Da Bao frowned, trying his best to look like he was reminiscing.

“I went there when I was little,” Xiao Bao said, “with my grandparents.”

Xu Yan was somewhat surprised that Xiao Bao actually remembered his grandparents.

“Well,” Da Bao hesitated, “I’ve been there before, so Grandpa and Grandma shouldn’t just take Xiao Bao and not me.”

“Yes, Grandpa and Grandma, Uncle and Aunt, they love you both the same,” Xu Yan said. “They won’t only take care of Xiao Bao or only take care of Da Bao.”

Da Bao grinned.

Just as Xiao Bai's white teeth were showing, Xu Yan continued, "Even if Da Bao is reluctant to get out of bed at noon, we still have to shake him awake and take him out."

Little Da Bao withdrew his smile, shook Xu Yan's arm, and said in a spoiled tone, "Third Aunt."

Xu Yan smiled so hard her eyes narrowed.

The road to the town wasn't far; the three of them chatted and laughed as they walked for about half an hour and arrived.

There were too many people when we came to the market that day, and we couldn't see the houses around us clearly. Now, there are only the three of them on the whole road. It's empty, and you can see almost everything with just a glance.

Xu Yan was initially worried that the two children would be squeezed by the crowd, but it turned out that the two little rascals could walk sideways.

"Third Aunt," Da Bao said, looking up, "there's no one here."

“Well, there’s no one here,” Xu Yan said. “So you don’t need to follow the instructions I just gave you. As long as you don’t go too far, you can wander around the area.”

Children are naturally curious.

After Xu Yan let go of Da Bao and Xiao Bao's hands, the two of them darted back and forth, peeking around at some dilapidated houses. However, when they reached a small house, they both stopped.

"What's wrong?" Xu Yan asked.

“Over there,” Da Bao pointed.

Xu Yan went over and saw that behind the small house was a large open space, and on the open space was a school.

Xu Yan had good eyesight; even from this distance, he immediately spotted the sign hanging next to the school's large iron gate—"Qingyang Road Commune Primary School."

A primary school.

Very few children in rural areas attend school, so it's impossible to establish schools in villages.

Xu Yan had previously said that she wanted to send Da Bao and Xiao Bao to school, but she and Xie Zhuo couldn't come to a conclusion. Later, when she learned that there was no school in the village, and because she was worried about Xiao Bao's feelings, she continued to teach him at home.

She planned to take Xie Zhuo to study in City B when they went to university in two years, but unexpectedly they were transferred to the commune primary school.

Xu Yan looked at Da Bao, then at Xiao Bao, and asked, "Shall we go over and take a look?"

The two little ones immediately turned to look at her.

Da Bao pinched the hem of his clothes with his fingers, blinked, and asked, "Is it okay?"

“Of course,” Xu Yan said.

She patted Da Bao and Xiao Bao on the head and then started walking towards the school, saying, "Let's go."

Da Bao and Xiao Bao immediately ran after her happily.

Even in the town's school, there weren't many students. Looking through the windows, you could see that even with older and younger students in one room, there weren't enough to make up thirty students.
