Chapter 12 Is he jealous?
Jiang Suining slept relatively soundly. At first, as the ship swayed from side to side, her stomach churned, and her body felt like it was falling into a bottomless whirlpool. Her heart was pounding, and she felt uncomfortable all over. She curled up at the innermost part of her bunk and subconsciously wrapped herself tightly in the blankets, as if that would make her more comfortable.
Later, probably as the medication took effect, he drifted off to sleep. Once asleep, he became restless, turning over, kicking off the blanket, and lying flat on his back on the bed.
The single bed in the sleeper berth wasn't very spacious, and Jiang Suining's arms and legs were dangling off the edge of the bed. Lu Ye was worried that if she kept them hanging like that for too long, her blood wouldn't circulate properly and her arms and legs would feel uncomfortable when she got up, so he helped her put them back and covered her with the blanket.
Lu Aiguo came in after he had covered Jiang Suining with a blanket. He was helping an old man who was thin, wore glasses, and looked haggard.
The two had originally bought seats, but the elderly man got seasick, so Lü Aiguo upgraded to a sleeper berth.
Although they were alumni, they were from different years and weren't exactly acquainted. Lü Aiguo had just graduated, while Lu Ye had graduated three years earlier, making Lu Ye Lü Aiguo's senior.
After settling the elderly man down, giving him seasickness medication, and putting him to sleep, the two began to talk in hushed tones.
After graduating, Lü Aiguo was assigned to the island infrastructure engineering department. This time, when he went there to report for duty, he was given a task: to protect the old man who had just arrived safely on the island. As for what the old man did, he didn't know very well, only that he was a scientist.
These were classified information, and he did not tell Lu Ye in detail. He was quite surprised when he learned that Lu Ye was leaving the island to get married. Back in military school, Lu Ye was a prominent figure. It was said that the daughter of a high-ranking officer had always liked him and even gave up her position at the Capital Military Hospital to transfer to work at the island's military hospital. However, he always refused, saying that he was already engaged to a village woman.
Many people at the school knew about this. He had even heard people talking about it before he graduated, speculating whether the two would end up together. Now it seems they didn't.
Lu Aiguo had also shipped the two as a couple, and was somewhat disappointed to hear that Lu Ye had married someone else. He had the good fortune to meet the military doctor who admired Lu Ye once; she was beautiful, charming, and cheerful, more than a match for Lu Ye.
Thinking of this, Lü Aiguo felt somewhat unbalanced, so he asked Lu Ye's wife about it.
"She got seasick, took her medicine and went to sleep." Lu Ye glanced at Jiang Suining, who was sleeping soundly on the bed.
Lu Aiguo followed his gaze and quickly looked away, but he still saw Jiang Suining's face clearly. Her facial features were soft and delicate, and her skin was like cream. She was a beauty.
He suddenly understood why Lu Ye didn't accept the leader's daughter.
However, while he could understand, he still couldn't agree with Lu Ye's choice. One was the daughter of a high-ranking official, and the other was a village woman he had never met as a child betrothed. Anyone would know which to choose. He felt that Lu Ye was somewhat ungrateful. If he were in the era he had transmigrated to, he would probably be a love-struck fool.
There were people sleeping in the cabin. The two of them chatted in hushed tones for a few minutes and then fell silent. Lu Aiguo, craving a cigarette, took out his cigarette case and invited Lu Ye to the deck for a smoke. Lu Ye declined. Although he smoked, he wasn't addicted. Besides, he didn't feel comfortable leaving Jiang Suining alone in the cabin.
Lu Aiguo went to the deck and didn't return to the cabin until lunchtime. Jiang Suining and the scientist had both woken up.
Out of politeness, Lu Ye formally introduced Jiang Suining to Lü Aiguo. Jiang Suining did not expect to meet Lu Ye's comrade-in-arms before even reaching the island. However, this comrade-in-arms was a bit strange. He looked at her as if he had seen a ghost, his eyes wide open.
Jiang Suining had no idea of Lü Aiguo's shock. Just now, she was lying down sleeping, and Lü Aiguo had only glanced at her briefly, so he couldn't see her clearly. But now, Lü Aiguo could see her clearly. This person looked so much like his senior sister from before he transmigrated; she was practically a replica of his senior sister who was five years younger.
After he transmigrated, his appearance remained basically unchanged, and even his major was still relevant; only his name changed. Similarly, could his senior sister have also transmigrated, since she was present when the laboratory exploded?
Lu Aiguo's change in expression did not escape Lu Ye's notice. He frowned, took a step to the side, and shielded Jiang Suining behind him.
Normally, Lü Aiguo would have understood Lu Ye's thoughts instantly, but at this moment, his mind was filled with the idea that the person in front of him might be his senior sister from before he transmigrated. He didn't notice Lu Ye's change at all, and even felt that Lu Ye's sudden act of blocking Jiang Suining was a bit of an eyesore.
He unconsciously moved closer to Jiang Suining so that he could see her more clearly.
Lu Ye's face darkened immediately, and he pulled Jiang Suining behind him, saying, "Make way, we're going to the restaurant to eat."
Lu Aiguo then realized that Lu Ye was angry and immediately realized that it was impolite to keep staring at someone's wife. It seemed that he would have to think of another way to find out if she was his senior sister.
There weren't many passengers in the restaurant. Most of them brought their own food. Jiang Suining and Lu Ye had brought their own as well. Jiang's mother had specially prepared beef sauce and steamed buns, but they had already eaten them yesterday.
Jiang Suining felt much better after a nap, but her head was still a little dizzy. The boat was rocking slightly, and she wouldn't have gotten up to eat if she hadn't been so hungry.
My stomach was still a little uncomfortable, and I didn't have much of an appetite. I looked at the menu and ordered a clear soup noodle dish and some pickled vegetables.
Lu Ye thought for a moment and then ordered a bowl of noodles with soybean paste.
After the two ordered their food, Lü Aiguo helped the scientist in and they shared a table.
Lu Ye frowned almost imperceptibly, but out of politeness, he didn't shoo the person away.
After asking the two people what they wanted to eat and consulting with the elderly, Lü Aiguo ordered two bowls of noodles with soybean paste.
During the break, the group introduced themselves briefly, and Jiang Suining learned that the old man's name was Chen Liyan.
Lu Aiguo and Chen Liyan—she tried to recall the plot of the original book, hoping to learn more about these two people, but her head was spinning and she couldn't remember anything. Forget it, she was too lazy to rack her brains; she'd do it another day when she was feeling better. Filling her stomach was the priority.
The clear soup noodles were served steaming hot, but looking at the bland broth, Jiang Suining, who already had no appetite, became even less willing to eat. She picked up a piece with her chopsticks, blew on it to cool it down, and put it in her mouth. Sure enough, it was as bland and tasteless as it looked.
"I can't eat." Jiang Suining put down her chopsticks, her voice tinged with complaint and grievance.
Lu Ye had just finished mixing his noodles with soybean paste and hadn't even picked up his chopsticks yet when he pushed the bowl in front of Jiang Suining: "Try the noodles with soybean paste."
The glossy, dark brown color did indeed look more appetizing. Jiang Suining subconsciously licked her lips, somewhat tempted: "If I eat it, what will you eat?"
Lu Ye placed her clear soup noodles in front of him: "I'll eat this."
"Huh? I've already eaten, isn't that inappropriate?" Jiang Suining hesitated. After all, Lu Ye ordered the noodles with soybean paste, which meant he liked them. She had ordered the clear soup noodles, and it wouldn't be right for her to eat what Lu Ye liked but not herself. There's a saying, "A gentleman doesn't take what others like."
“There’s nothing wrong with that. You’re my wife.” Lu Ye picked up a piece of noodles with his chopsticks, blew on it briefly, slurped it into his mouth, bit it off, and was about to chew it whole and swallow it when he suddenly remembered that Jiang Suining had once said to chew slowly and carefully. So he chewed it carefully again before swallowing it.
Jiang Suining's heart skipped a beat, touched by his words, "You are my wife." Because she was his wife, was she favored, not disliked, indulged, and was he willing to take care of her?
She stopped hesitating, picked up a piece of the noodles with soybean paste and ate it. It tasted pretty good, at least more flavorful than plain noodles.
After lunch, the ship was about to dock. The four of them packed their luggage and disembarked after docking. As they left the pier, Lu Ye spotted a splash of olive green in the crowd. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was someone he knew.
“I see my comrade-in-arms. Let’s go say hello.” Lu Ye naturally took Jiang Suining’s hand. Lü Aiguo, wanting to test Jiang Suining, quickly followed.
"Guodong." Lu Ye pulled Jiang Suining to a soldier in military uniform who was looking around.
"Lu Ye!" Li Guodong saw Lu Ye's smile, reached out and patted him on the shoulder, "Didn't you take your wedding leave? How come you're back so soon? Where's your wife? Did you marry her?"
Lu Ye turned to look at Jiang Suining: "This is my wife, Jiang Suining."
"Hello, nice to meet you. Please take care of me." Jiang Suining reached out and shook hands with him lightly, thinking to herself that this was the male lead. He was so ordinary. No wonder the female lead couldn't forget her white moonlight. She couldn't help but look at Lu Ye.
Speaking of Li Guodong, he is burly and dark-skinned, a tough guy, but in terms of looks, he really can't compare to Lu Ye. However, he is not without merits. At least at first glance, he gives women a sense of security and seems to be a reliable, honest, and good-tempered man.
"What are you doing here?" Lu Ye asked curiously. "It should be the time for political study sessions in the regiment's various companies at this hour."
“I’m here to pick them up,” Li Guodong explained. “The regiment recently transferred a construction engineer and a scientist who are arriving today. The regiment assigned me to pick them up.”
"Hello, is the infrastructure engineering corps you mentioned surnamed Lü?" Lü Aiguo, who had followed along, overheard Li Guodong's words. "Lü Aiguo, that scientist is named Chen Liyan."
"How did you know?" Li Guodong looked Lü Aiguo up and down. "You are?"
"Yes, yes, my name is Lü Aiguo, and this gentleman is Chen Liyan." Lü Aiguo took out two letters of introduction from his pocket and handed them to Li Guodong.
After opening it and examining it carefully, Li Guodong looked at Lu Ye and asked, "Do you two know each other?"
“I know you, we’re alumni,” Lü Aiguo said first.
"That's quite a coincidence." Li Guodong returned the letter of introduction to him. "Alright, we've picked them up. Let's go. Lu Ye, I'll pick you and your wife up too. I have something to tell you."
"What's all the mystery about?" Lu Ye assumed it was a work-related arrangement.
Li Guodong glanced at the people around him: "Let's talk about it when we get back, no rush."
Lu Ye knew Li Guodong's personality all too well; he couldn't keep anything to himself. The fact that he wasn't saying anything now meant this matter was more than it seemed. He didn't ask any more questions, helped put the luggage in the jeep, and opened the passenger door: "Old Chen, please sit in the front."
Chen Liyan declined, but the young men insisted that he sit down, so he got on the bus.
Lu Ye opened the back door and sat in the middle, separating Jiang Suining and Lü Aiguo. Jiang Suining didn't think much of his little scheme, but Lü Aiguo saw it and found it amusing.
"Is she jealous?" Lu Aiguo thought to himself, feeling a little annoyed. He wanted to find out Jiang Suining's identity as soon as possible. He leaned forward slightly, looked at Jiang Suining, and asked, "Is your sister-in-law from Kyoto?"
"No." Before Jiang Suining could speak, Lu Ye answered for her.
Jiang Suining was somewhat surprised by Lu Ye's behavior, but she didn't mind, since she and Lü Aiguo had only just met.
“I thought my sister-in-law was from Kyoto,” Lu Aiguo said, not caring about Lu Ye’s attitude, “I have a senior sister who looks a lot like my sister-in-law. She also has the surname Jiang and is from Kyoto. I thought you two were sisters.”
"Really?" Jiang Suining chuckled inwardly, wondering if Lu Aiguo was telling the truth or not. If it was true, then it was quite a coincidence; if it was false, what was he planning?
“Yes,” Lü Aiguo said without batting an eye, “her name is Jiang Mengyao.”
Jiang Suining suddenly turned her head to look at him: "What's your name?"
