This story features a romantic pairing and allies who are strong and collaborate effectively.
Bai Shuang is an outstanding successor of a traditional Chinese medicine family. She not only pos...
The next day, Bai Shuang and her two companions left by car at dawn. They found a well-trodden road used by fishermen, crossed the Yellow River, and headed straight for Yunshi.
The journey was relatively smooth. Because the route avoided the mountains, the three of them arrived near Longcheng smoothly two days later.
Bai Jiu asked, "Miss, where shall we go first?"
"Let's go to Dragon City Base first and ask someone for directions."
Longcheng Base is an official base, so internal security shouldn't be a problem. Staying here to rest will also allow me to get to know the area better, which is much safer than staying in the wild.
As the car traveled along the official road, the three of them looked around in different directions to see if anyone was around. In the distance, they spotted a large truck driving towards them.
Judging from the speed at which the vehicle was moving, it must have been carrying a heavy load.
"Let's park the car on the side of the road and wait."
The heavy truck slowly drove over and passed by Bai Shuang's snowmobile. Bai Jiu was about to wave to signal them to stop, but Bai Shuang stopped him.
Because there was a gun pointed out from the window of the heavy truck, and a car was following behind the heavy truck, with its gun also pointed out.
After they had gone far away, Bai Shuang said to Bai Jiu, "Didn't you see the guns in their windows just now?"
"If we abruptly call a halt, we could easily be mistaken for robbers and they might fire a shot at us."
Therefore, Bai Shuang couldn't afford to gamble, nor was it worth it. It wouldn't matter if she arrived at the base a day later, but the three of them couldn't afford to get into trouble.
Bai Jiu was somewhat puzzled, "Why are they so heavily guarded just because they're hauling coal?"
"First, it's extremely cold now, and coal is just as important as food, because there's not much difference between freezing to death and starving to death."
Second, this place isn't safe; there are probably frequent robberies.
Bai Chang: "Judging by their actions, could they be delivering coal to the Longcheng base? Should we follow them?"
Bai Shuang nodded, "Okay, but try to keep the distance as far as possible."
We must avoid any misunderstandings or accidental injuries.
Then, the three of them drove their snowmobile and followed at a distance. After traveling for about ten kilometers, they heard a series of gunshots coming from ahead...
Bai Jiu: "Holy crap, there really are people stealing coal."
Bai Chang: "It seems the area around Longcheng is much more chaotic than our Tangcheng."
Bai Shuang: "Tang City used to be a military base."
It's not safe for us to stay here. Let's move the car off the main road.
Bai Shuang and her companions drove to a secluded road and hid behind a snowdrift. The three of them were fully armed, with bullets loaded, and sat in the car waiting, hoping that the conflict would not implicate them.
About ten minutes later, a group of people ran across the road, with others chasing after them at gunpoint.
The group in front would occasionally return fire with their homemade guns.
The road was lined with high snow, and they didn't have time to climb up. They could only run forward as fast as they could. When they finally came to a crossroads, they split into three groups.
Some of them ran towards the path where Bai Shuang and the others were.
Bai Jiu: "We might not be able to avoid it."
The footsteps grew closer, and Bai Shuang and the others stuck their guns out the window. If they saw the guns and left, the three of them wouldn't interfere.
But they just wouldn't.
"There are snowmobiles!"
"Let's go together, rob it, and drive it away."
The group ran toward the snowmobile, ignoring the guns pointed at them.
"Bang!" Bai Chang fired a shot into the air, giving them a final warning, but unfortunately, the warning was ineffective.
At this point, they were still out of range of the homemade guns, which had a range of about one-half to one-quarter that of the submachine guns.
Bang bang, bang bang bang...
Without any further hesitation, the three men charged forward, and those who were rushing forward fell into pools of blood before they could even turn around, and were quickly frozen solid.
Two minutes later, the people chasing after them arrived.
Three people saw the snowmobile, the submachine guns that Bai Shuang and the others were holding, and then they looked at the robbers' corpses on the ground and guessed what had happened.
They stood outside the range of the submachine guns and put down their weapons.
"Don't misunderstand, we were ordered to haul coal for the base. We were just robbed and they chased after us."
As they spoke, the men took out their work IDs and held them up for Bai Shuang and the others to see.
Although she couldn't see clearly, Bai Shuang didn't sense any hostility from them, and out of courtesy, Bai Shuang and the others also put down their guns.
He gestured to them, telling them to sling their guns over their backs and come closer.
The three men walked over and handed over their work IDs, which Bai Chang took and examined carefully.
Bai Shuang held a poison needle in her hand, her eyes fixed on the group. Bai Jiu, though not pointing the gun at them, kept it out of reach.
Bai Chang told her it was true, and then asked about the exact location of the base.
"We've come to find our relatives and are on our way to the base."
I was about to ask you for directions, but when I saw your guns pointed outwards, I was worried about accidentally hitting someone, so I didn't dare approach.
The person in charge among them, surnamed Wang, also checked the ID cards of Bai Shuang and the other two.
"That's perfect. Come with us, we're not far from the base."
Bai Jiu got out of the car and picked up the bandits' homemade guns. Someone nearby saw this and said, "The base doesn't allow so many guns inside."
Bai Jiu gave them half of the homemade gun he had picked up, and kept the rest.
Taking the opportunity, Bai Shuang asked, "Is it permissible to bring in a small number of guns?"
"In principle, it's not allowed. Just keep the few you have safe and make sure the person in charge of the inspection doesn't see them when you come in, and you'll be fine."
In chaotic times, it's not surprising that people have things for self-defense, but it shouldn't be excessive and pose a threat to the base.
Indeed, which of those wealthy people and high-ranking officials doesn't have a few firearms at home?
