Chapter 7 Divorce

As soon as it was light, Qi Zhijun washed up and rode his bicycle to Wei Shuqing's factory. He watched Wei Shuqing come out from a distance at the gate, then walked a few steps quickly and slapped her across the face.

"Ah!" Wei Shuqing fell to the ground, covering her face. People who were getting off the night shift gathered around one after another. Qi Zhijun pointed at Wei Shuqing and said, "How could you be so vicious? You hurt Wang Dong's head like that. He's just a child."

Wei Shuqing stood up, dusted off her clothes, looked up at him, and shouted, "Are you sick in the head?! Who did that? You old Qi family members are so good at twisting the truth and spouting nonsense. Did you even ask them? Qi Zhijun, are you seriously ill? Your own child was beaten so badly by those little beasts that he fell into my pants. Your own son was beaten so badly he was almost dead, and you didn't say a word! I thought you were heartless. We've been married for over two years, and now I realize you're a cold-blooded, selfish beast."

Qi Zhijun, her face flushed with anger, said, "Ah, so you mean I wronged you? Don't you see what you did? You went home and caused a scene, beating the child so badly that my dad had to be hospitalized because of you. What exactly are you trying to cause trouble for?"

Wei Shuqing was furious, nodding repeatedly and saying, "Now I understand! In your eyes, Aiguo and I are nothing. Your whole family are just lackeys of Qi Zhifang and those three little beasts. When Aiguo and I got into such a big mess, he was eating and drinking well at home, having a great time! That little beast fell and hurt his head, and he was so worried he had to be hospitalized. Now I see who's close and who's distant. And you bastard, you've touched your precious darling, haven't you!"

Qi Zhijun pointed at Wei Shuqing with an expression that said, "You're hopeless and unreasonable!" and angrily said, "You still won't admit it!"

Wei Shuqing stepped forward and slapped his hand away, shouting, "Admit what? He bumped into it himself, how come he didn't die, you ungrateful wretch, you little beast!"

Qi Zhijun, enraged, rushed forward to strike again, but was stopped by Zhao Dahu, who shouted, "Stop! What kind of hero hits a woman! Can't you talk things out?"

Qi Zhijun, enraged, pointed at Wei Shuqing and said, "Ask her what she's done! She beat her nephew and made her father-in-law so angry he had to be hospitalized. My Qi family can't afford such a vicious woman. Divorce!"

Wei Shuqing pushed Zhao Dahu away and said, "I hit my nephew? Why don't you say that your dear nephew beat me so badly that I miscarried, and the baby was all in my pants? Your parents didn't say a word, they just pretended to be deaf and dumb. If they weren't afraid I would sue you, would they have just said sorry and that would have been the end of it? It hasn't been long, and now you've come to my house and almost beaten my son to death! Your parents were happily cooking for your precious nephew the very next day, taking care of him in every possible way!"

As she spoke, she stepped forward and, pushing and hitting the King of Qi, cursed, "That little beast Wang Dong tried to hit me and ended up kowtowing, and you're blaming me? How can your family be so good at twisting the truth! Divorce? You dare to divorce me!"

Qi Zhijun dodged a few times, then shoved Wei Shuqing, sending her stumbling back several steps. If Zhao Dahu hadn't pulled her back, she would have fallen. Qi Zhijun sneered, "My Qi family can't afford a wife like you. Stop talking nonsense, let's get a divorce, right now!"

Wei Shuqing wiped away her tears and said, "Fine! Now his precious grandson is injured, and he's so sad that he's sick, right? You spineless man, you still dare to divorce me? Fine, Qi Zhijun, you're something else, your Qi family is something else! Divorce, let's divorce today. Whoever doesn't divorce is a coward and a bastard. The house is mine, the child is mine, and give me back my money."

Qi Zhijun sneered, "Don't just talk the talk. Go get the letter of introduction and we'll complete the formalities today. You can have the house, and I'll return the money, but you can't take the child with you!"

Wei Shuqing spat and said, "You're dreaming! With your family's biased and patriarchal ways, my patriotism can't stay in your family. If you dare to disagree, I'll make a scene every day. Let's see how long you can last!"

Qi Zhijun coldly said, "Give me the letter of introduction, and we'll get a divorce right away."

Wei Shuqing turned around and went to the factory office, readily obtaining a letter of introduction. Qi Zhijun also went to his workplace to obtain a letter of introduction to process the divorce. In the end, the house, children, and existing savings went to Wei Shuqing, but Wei Shuqing's salary for those two years was not returned.

Both agreed, took the divorce certificate, and Wei Shuqing left without hesitation. The two arrived home one after the other, picked up the child, and Qi Aiguo sensed the different atmosphere. He burst into tears, crying, "Daddy, Daddy, hug Aiguo, hug Aiguo." He stretched out his little hands while crying. Wei Shuqing picked up Qi Aiguo and sat there watching Qi Zhijun pack his things. Qi Zhijun only glanced at Qi Aiguo while packing, said nothing, and left without looking back.

Wei Shuqing sat there blankly, holding her son and comforting him, thinking to herself, "This can be considered a fulfillment of the divorce! It's better than the self in the book; at least I actually own a house of my own."

It wasn't until her son cried out that she snapped out of her daze, fed him, and then faced the very real problem: she was working the night shift, what would happen to her child? After thinking it over, she went to Aunt Zhao's house, told her about her situation, and asked for her help. She offered to pay Aunt Zhao one yuan a month to pick up her child when she was on the night shift.

Aunt Zhao understood, since there was still money to be made, so she agreed.

Knowing she was working the night shift, he said, "Xiao Wei! You can leave the child with me, I'll watch him for you, you can get some sleep."

With tears in her eyes, Wei Shuqing nodded and said, "Thank you, Aunt Zhao."

Qi Aiguo was picked up by Aunt Zhao. Wei Shuqing felt as if all her strength had been drained. She collapsed onto the bed, her mind filled with thoughts of how she couldn't escape the fate of divorce, both in the book and in real life. Perhaps she and Qi Zhijun were just not meant to be!

There's no doubt that she occasionally harbored feelings for Qi Zhijun. The fact that she endured that family for over two years was precisely because she cared about him. But then she dreamt of that book—it was so real, so real, that she believed it described her own life. This shattered her illusions about Qi Zhijun, and she stopped having any illusions about the Qi family.
