Gentle and radiant history graduate student vs. Cool, charming, and de...
"It's nothing. Fixing a water pipe is not a big deal. It's just a piece of cake."
He took the tissue Song Shengsheng handed him and wiped his hands. "By the way, I have a friend who has an unused house nearby. He's been abroad all year round and rarely comes back. He said not long ago that he wanted us to help him find a tenant to rent out the house. He doesn't ask for a high rent, but he just doesn't want the house to be empty. Mother-in-law, do you have any thoughts on moving?"
Su Bei was stunned for a moment, then looked at Song Shengsheng and smiled, "I do want to, but I really don't have any spare money recently. I just broke up, so I'm not in the mood to think about moving. Let's talk about it later."
After saying that, she turned around and lazily walked towards the restaurant: "Come over and have dinner. I'm starving. I slept all day and didn't eat anything."
Song Shengsheng slowly frowned. She took two quick steps, took Su Bei's arm, and asked, "How come you don't have any spare money? Didn't you tell me in June that you had saved a small amount of money?"
Su Bei curled her lips helplessly. She didn't know how to explain to Song Shengsheng for a moment. She could only sigh and try to change the subject. She smiled and said, "Shengsheng, it's your birthday today. In previous years, you had to stay at home on this day. How can you come out this year?"
Jiang Yiyu said, "I saw that she was bored staying at home, so I took her out."
Su Bei pulled out a chair and pressed Song Shengsheng's shoulders, asking her to sit down. Then he turned around and gave Jiang Yiyu a thumbs-up: "Great, Mr. Jiang. You sit by yourself, I won't make any arrangements for you."
"Okay, leave me alone. I'll just sit next to my wife."
After hearing what he said, Su Bei smiled and walked around the table to sit down opposite Song Shengsheng. He turned on the induction cooker and said, "The pot has been on for a while. Do you want to have some drinks first?"
Jiang Yiyu pointed at the cola, Sprite, and orange juice on the table and asked Song Shengsheng, "Guai guai, which one do you want?"
"Oolong tea."
"Isn't there any?"
Su Bei smiled and said, "I knew she definitely doesn't like sweet drinks. She wants to drink oolong tea iced. As soon as I received her message, I put the oolong tea in the refrigerator to cool it down. You guys wait, I'll go get it."
Su Bei stood up and walked into the kitchen. Jiang Yiyu gently bumped Song Shengsheng's arm, leaned close to her and whispered, "She just broke up. There are some things she doesn't want to talk about, so don't ask."
"That was the money she had saved since she graduated from college. It's gone just like that, and she's unwilling to talk about it. My guess is it's related to Zhou Han. I have to find out more so I can help her get justice."
"She doesn't even care, why are you asking for justice for her?"
"You don't understand! I've watched her and Zhou Han be together for six years. Zhou Han's family is not well off, so Su Bei indulges him, using her family connections to help him find a job and pay off his car loan. When his mother was sick and went to the hospital for treatment, she had to ask Su Bei to find a connection to get her a ward. If Zhou Han really did something to let Su Bei down, then I must intervene! No matter what, it would be unfair to Su Bei and I for being sisters for so many years."
"How do you manage it?"
Song Shengsheng clenched her fists. She stared at Su Bei closing the refrigerator door and said word by word firmly, "Beat him!"
Jiang Yiyu shuddered for no apparent reason. He watched the red oil soup base boiling in the pot, picked up a bottle of Coke, unscrewed the cap and took a sip. Before Su Bei came over, he lowered his voice and hurriedly reminded him, "Don't be impulsive. We must abide by the law."
Song Shengsheng snorted disdainfully: "Coward."
After Su Bei sat down, he handed the oolong tea to Song Shengsheng: "What were you two talking about just now?"
"It's a secret. I can't tell you." Song Shengsheng took the oolong tea and handed it to Jiang Yiyu: "I can't open it."
Jiang Yiyu smiled and helped her unscrew the bottle cap.
Song Shengsheng took a sip of water, picked up his chopsticks, and poured a plate of beef rolls into the boiling pot: "Tell me honestly, how did you lose all that money?"
Su Bei groaned and immediately lost his temper: "Why do you still remember this? My ancestors, please don't ask me anymore. Just think of it as me doing charity and then the money is gone."
"If you really were doing charity, I wouldn't say a word, but you can't do charity for your ex-boyfriend! What's wrong with you?"
Su Bei's eyes dodged, and he hissed, "This is a long story."
"Then just make it short. If you don't want to tell me, let's call Zhou Han right now, no, after we finish eating, and I'll go and ask for the money for you."
Su Bei cast a pleading look at Jiang Yiyu, who shook his head helplessly. There was nothing he could do. Under Song Shengsheng's pressing questioning, Su Bei lowered his eyes and stirred the dipping sauce in the bowl with chopsticks while whispering guiltily, "At the end of May, he told me he wanted to buy a house and we could pool our money for the down payment. We'd put our names on the house then. I figured we'd get married in six years, and my mom said we could only get married if we had a house, so I gave him the money for the down payment."
"Have you bought the house yet?"
Su Bei shook his head: "I don't know. He said he bought it, but maybe he didn't..."
Song Shengsheng slammed his chopsticks on the table. "Are you stupid? Are you crazy? You haven't even seen the house yet, and you gave him the money. Why?!"
"Isn't that stupid? I believed his lies." Su Bei smiled bitterly and sighed: "And then, in the past few years, I have been paying rent for two houses, the one I live with him, and the one I own now. So to be honest, if it weren't for my family's help, I really wouldn't be able to save any money."
"If I remember correctly, he was the one who begged you to go live with him, right?"
"Yes, I live here, so I paid half the price. I didn't return the house because I was afraid that if he and I had a fight one day, I would have a way out."
