Chapter 234: Ancestral Law

"Classmate, classmate, what's wrong with you?"

"Someone fainted, call 120!"

"Spread out, everyone, spread out a little, keep the air circulating. I'm from the medical school, I know first aid."

A hollow, ethereal voice seemed to come from nowhere, echoing in Chen Ge's ears. It felt strangely familiar. Medical school? What a coincidence! Could it be a junior?

Chen Ge wanted to see the person who was speaking clearly, but his eyelids felt as heavy as a thousand pounds and he couldn't open them no matter what. Only these voices kept lingering in his ears.

Then, he knew nothing.

"It looks like he's survived, but I don't know which hospital he's in this time. It's really torturous to be forced to play hide-and-seek with death, and I don't know how much longer I can hold on."

Thinking of this, Chen Ge slowly opened his eyes.

Then he saw a big face plate!

A young man wearing long silk, with a jade waist ornament and holding a folding fan in his hand, was looking down at him.

He has sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, and he is very imposing. He is also born with a good appearance.

Seeing Chen Ge open his eyes, the man was very excited and blurted out: "Brother Chen, you finally woke up. I was scared to death."

Looking at the strange man in front of him, Chen Ge was surprised: "Who are you, a male nurse from the hospital? Your hospital is so open that people can wear ancient costumes to work?"

The young man was shocked when he heard this: "Brother Chen, what nonsense are you talking about? Don't you recognize me? I am Wang Rong!"

"Wang Rong?"

Just as Chen Ge was about to say he didn't know the person, a powerful and unfamiliar message exploded in his mind as if it had triggered an ignition device. Chen Ge felt his head buzz, his vision went dark, and he almost lost consciousness again.

It took a long time for Chen Ge to come back to his senses.

This was another memory in his mind, which told him that he was the eighth-generation great-grandson of Chen, a noble family in the Song Dynasty, and a legitimate official son.

This branch of the Chen family has a long history. It rose to prominence in the late Tang Dynasty, reached its peak during the reigns of Emperor Taizong and Emperor Zhenzong of Song, and has been on a downward trend since then.

Taizu Chen Xiang was a secretary of Bingmen in the late Tang Dynasty. Because he persuaded Wang Jian, who had entered Sichuan, not to proclaim himself emperor, he was demoted to the magistrate of Xinjing County. Later, he resigned from his post and lived in Xishui, Langzhou.

When our ancestor Chen Xu heard that his father had resigned from his official position and lived in Xishui, Langzhou, he took his wife and son from Xinhua, Hunan to Sichuan to find his father and reunited with Chen Xiang.

The founder, Chen Zhaowen, had no interest in officialdom, was obsessed with poetry and books, and taught his son carefully.

When Emperor Gaozu Chen Shenghua first entered officialdom, he was highly valued by Meng Chang, the last emperor of the Later Shu Kingdom, and served as the second-in-command of Xishui County. However, the good times did not last long. In 965 AD, the Later Shu Kingdom surrendered to the Song Dynasty.

Chen Shenghua was good at water conservancy and financial management. He was successively appointed as the magistrate of Liyang (the location of Zhengguo Canal), the transport envoy of Jingdong Road (the top local financial official), the prefect of Suzhou, and the prefect of Kaifeng. He was promoted to the rank of Left Counselor and was posthumously awarded the title of Prince's Junior Tutor and Duke of Qin.

The success of the Chen family can be said to have begun with Chen Shenghua, simply because he had good kidneys! He and his wife, Feng, had three children, all of whom were outstanding.

My great-grandfather Chen Yaozuo was the second child in the family. He inherited the excellent genes of his ancestor and was also good at water control and financial management.

After passing the imperial examination, he successively served as the financial chief of Liangzhe, Jingxi, Hedong and Hebei Road; during the Tianxi period, he was appointed as the governor of Huazhou and managed the bursting of the Yellow River with remarkable results.

After entering the central government, Gaozu made rapid progress, serving as a Hanlin scholar, deputy envoy of the Privy Council, and assistant minister of state affairs. He served as prime minister for three years before retiring as the crown prince's grand tutor.

My great-grandfather's two brothers were no less capable.

The eldest brother, Chen Yaosou, was the top scholar in the second year of Emperor Taizong of Song Dynasty. He also had the gene for financial management. He served as the head of finance in Guangnan West Road and later worked his way up to the Minister of Revenue.

This was certainly not the end. Chen Yaosou was also good at military affairs. He stabilized the southeastern border and served as the Privy Councilor after returning to Beijing.

During the reigns of Emperor Taizong and Emperor Zhenzong, wars were frequent and soldiers and horses were urgently needed. Except for Chen Yaosou, no one in the court could handle this matter. The court had no choice but to let Chen Yaosou take charge of the soldiers and horses as the Privy Councilor.

Chen Yaosou was later promoted to prime minister and served as privy councilor for three years. He was deeply trusted by the emperor, but because of his heavy workload and overwork, he became ill and died of illness in his early fifties.

The third son, Chen Yaozhi, was the top scholar in the imperial examination in the third year of Emperor Zhenzong's Xianping reign. He was not good at managing finances but was good at riding and shooting. He never missed his target and was regarded as a god. The sharpshooter in Ouyang Xiu's "The Oil Seller" was written about him.

He had a strong character. Although he was a top scholar, he preferred to wield swords and guns, ride horses and shoot arrows. He served as the Jiedushi of Yongxing Army, the Jiedushi of Anguo Army, and the Jiedushi of Wuxin Army.

This was the Chen family's golden age. Three of them were Jinshi (Jinshi), two of whom were top scorers. All three sons served in the imperial court and held important positions, including generals and ministers.

My grandfather, Chen Xue Gu, was the only son in the family. He did not inherit the good genes of his great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He failed the imperial examinations for many years and later became a minor official under the system of imperial favor.

Due to being too busy with government affairs, my great-grandfather Chen Yaozuo had a son in his old age. By the time he found out that his first child was broken, he was already unable to do so and had no energy to build a second one. He regarded it as a lifelong regret, so he added a rule to the Chen family motto: If the child is hopeless, have a baby as soon as possible!

His father, Chen Yuanxue, also failed the imperial examinations many times, so he simply gave up literature and went into business, starting a medicinal materials business. Because of the reputation of his great-grandfathers, no one dared to offend him, and he earned a huge fortune.

The father followed the family motto and had children as soon as possible, but ended up having seven daughters in a row, which made his face turn green. In the Song Dynasty, marrying off a daughter required a generous dowry.

Hard work pays off. After working day and night, the Chen family's incense continued.

Chen Ge is the only son in the family. He has been gifted and studious since childhood. Both his grandfather and father have high hopes for him and he has received the best education since he was young.
