Chapter 19: The Mess

Completely different from the all-knowing and all-powerful gods of classical mythology, Azathoth is completely devoid of intelligence, operating entirely on instinct. However, Lovecraft, the creator of the Cthulhu Mythos, used this as Azathoth's original attribute to symbolize the inherent horror of the universe in his mind. Dress, the rewriter and editor of the Cthulhu Mythos, believed that Azathoth was originally intelligent and the leader of the evil forces in the universe. Later, because he led the Old Ones in a rebellion against the good of the universe—the Old Gods—they were defeated and sealed by the Old Gods, losing all their intelligence and becoming a blind, ignorant, and terrifying demon king. (However, not all Cthulhu scholars agree with this adaptation. I personally don't like the Old God setting, as it feels it deviates from the Cthulhu system.)

Azathoth has no fixed form, its volume equivalent to a vast, boundless galaxy (and, when summoned from Earth, its diameter approaches thousands of kilometers), a foamy mass of chaotic matter. He exists outside the "ordered universe," his throne at the core of the infinite chaotic void, described in some dark magic books as "atomic chaos"—the "atomic" here does not refer to atomic energy, but rather to Azathoth's central position in the universe. Azathoth is permanently sealed, surrounded by countless amorphous dancers who endlessly play invisible flutes, producing an abominable, monotonous tone, while frantically beating crude hand drums to keep him calm.

According to the Cthulhu Mythos, at the dawn of the universe, Azathoth was the sole being. He gave birth to three primordial gods: Shub-Niggurath, the dark earth goddess; Yog-Sothoth, the ruler of time and space; and Nyarlathotep, Azathoth's messenger and agent of will. Due to Azathoth's blindness, foolishness, and capricious nature, he rarely has direct worshipers, whether human or alien. However, he is occasionally summoned by accident, resulting in immediate destruction or complete madness for the summoner. It is said that the asteroid belt was originally a giant planet from which Azathoth was summoned. However, upon his arrival, Azathoth suddenly became enraged and, with numerous pseudopods, shattered the planet, creating the asteroid belt.

First introduced in "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" (1943). Created by Master Aishouyi himself. Legend has it that the Gaisha worshipped an avatar of Azathoth, and were subsequently slain by Ghroth.

The setting of this work is quite different from the material, mainly to adapt to the subject matter.
