Chapter 542: A Person Without Morality

The wind was blowing, and a chill filled the county government building. The warm air from the air conditioner seemed unable to dispel the chill.

Jiang Weihua stood in front of Zheng Pei's office door and hesitated for two full seconds.

He raised his hands and put them down, put them down and raised them up again, and it felt like there were two little people fighting in his heart.

He knew that this apology was his last chance to save the situation, but his dignity was playing tricks on him, making him hesitate.

Finally, he gritted his teeth and knocked on the door that decided his fate.

"Knock, knock, knock." A few crisp knocks on the door echoed in the quiet corridor, but they fell on deaf ears and there was no response.

Jiang Weihua frowned, increased his strength, and knocked several times in a row, but the office was still dead silent.

He bravely reached out and turned the doorknob, only to find that the door was locked. Zheng Pei might not be there.

His shoulders slumped instantly, as if his spine had been pulled out. He lowered his head, sighed, and prepared to leave.

As soon as he turned around, he collided head-on with Wang Songlin who was walking towards him quickly.

Jiang Weihua looked up and saw Wang Songlin's face. He was startled and subconsciously took a step back. He frowned and complained, "Old Wang, why are you so anxious? Are you in a hurry to reincarnate?"

There was a hint of anger in his voice, as if he was embarrassed about having his secret discovered.

There was a faint smile on Wang Songlin's lips. In that smile, there was a disguise of politeness, but also contempt for Jiang Weihua.

He said slowly, "Deputy County Chief Jiang, I saw you kept knocking on Director Zheng's door, so I came to tell you that Director Zheng has gone to the countryside and is not at home. You can tell me if you have any work to do."

Wang Songlin's voice was not loud, but it was like a sharp knife, piercing straight into Jiang Weihua's heart.

He heard someone knocking on the door in his office and went out to see out of curiosity.

When he saw this, he was shocked to find that it was Jiang Weihua who was knocking on Zheng Pei's door.

He recalled the previous times when Jiang Weihua put pressure on Zheng Pei, and anger burned in his heart.

He was worried that Jiang Weihua was here to cause trouble for Zheng Pei again, so he hurried over to ask about the situation.

He thought to himself that it would be good to let Jiang Weihua know that so many people are watching, so he should stop bullying Zheng Pei!

Not to mention that County Magistrate Li Lin will not agree, even we old comrades in the government office can't stand your unscrupulous attitude!

Jiang Weihua glared at Wang Songlin, his teeth chattering and his face unfriendly.

He thought to himself, why are there nosy guys like you everywhere?

Even though I am no longer in charge of the government office, I am still the deputy county magistrate. Why are you, Wang Songlin, pretending to be a goody in front of me?

Is it my turn to tell you about my apology to Zheng Pei?

Do you really think you are so important? How ridiculous!

He just hummed contemptuously at Wang Songlin, his nose almost turned up to the sky, and without paying any more attention, he passed by Wang Songlin.

His condescending and arrogant attitude seemed so ridiculous at this moment, like a plucked rooster, with only appearance for show.

Although Wang Songlin was ignored, he laughed softly when he saw Jiang Weihua's slightly lonely back as he left.

He thought to himself, you look down on me, and I look down on you even more.

With County Magistrate Li Lin around, it's only a matter of time before you're sidelined. Why are you still so proud?

His laughter was full of joy and sarcasm, as if announcing to the world that Jiang Weihua's era was over.

Jiang Weihua walked on the way back to the office, and every step he took felt as if it was filled with lead and was extremely heavy.

Every time he passed by the door of an office, someone would cautiously stick their head out, point at his back and whisper something.

He knew without listening that those people must be laughing at him for not getting the better of him, not only did he fail to take down Director Zheng Pei, but he was also deprived of his management rights over the government office by County Magistrate Li Lin. He totally deserved it!

His face turned red, as if he had been slapped several times in public. He felt ashamed and annoyed, but had no place to vent.

Sitting in the office, Jiang Weihua began another fierce ideological struggle.

He has deeply felt the contemptuous attitude of everyone towards him. If he still disregards his dignity and goes to Li Lin to show his goodwill, wouldn't the little dignity he has left be gone?

Who will look up to him as the deputy county magistrate in the future?

His fingers kept tapping on the desk, making a rapid and chaotic sound, as if beating on his panicked heart.

Just as he was getting entangled in confusion, his cell phone suddenly rang. The sharp ringtone broke the silence of the office and startled him.

He frowned and hesitated for a moment before taking his cell phone out of his pocket.

When I opened it, it was Zhao Chengqiang.

His frown deepened, but he still pressed the answer button.

Just as I put the phone to my ear, I heard Zhao Chengqiang's hearty laughter, "County Magistrate Jiang, are you free tonight? You haven't been to the villa for a long time. I've prepared some game tonight. I'll call County Magistrate Wu too. Let's have a drink tonight?"

Zhao Chengqiang's voice sounded enthusiastic, but to Jiang Weihua, it sounded like irony.

Jiang Weihua was in no mood to drink, and he didn't dare to get too close to Zhao Chengqiang during this sensitive period.

So, he decisively refused, "Mr. Zhao, I have a meeting tonight and don't have time. Let's do it another day."

His voice was crisp and clear, without a trace of drag, as if he was proving to himself that he was still in control of the situation.

"Oh." Zhao Chengqiang was stunned for a moment, and suddenly felt a strange feeling in his heart.

In the past, even if Jiang Weihua had a meeting in the evening, he would attend it after the meeting. He had never refused as decisively as he did today.
